For thinking the subject of the first ever photographic portrait is pretty hot?

This is Robert Cornelius (1809-1893), an American photographer. In 1839 set up his camera, sat in front of it for 15 minutes, and in doing so became the subject of what is generally accepted to be the first photographic portrait (and, simultaneously, the first selfie).

AIBU to think he’s pretty hot?

thank u for sharing the first selfie.I agree with you.
Unfortunately travel time is not
an option in my case.

YANBU to think he’s hot, but it’s not a new observation - his hotness has been discussed endlessly online for many many years!

GoodnightDoom · 29/06/2024 22:55

I opened your thread and saw Mr Tumnus, so it's a no from me...

(Though if I could unsee that first image in my mind, I'd actually agree with you)

Yeah but you would have been too 😆

Oh yes, true!

CheeseSandwichRiskAssessment · 29/06/2024 22:50

Colin Firth's nerdy brother 👌👌

Hmm hygeine standards and lack of baths and showers back then puts me off. He was probably quite stinky.

He is how I imagine Willoughby to look like in Sense and Sensibility. Very dashing.

There’s a book that’s just come out called The Ministry of Time which was apparently prompted entirely by the author seeing an old photo and thinking, hmm, Victorian hottie 😉 And so she wrote a time travel romance…

It must have been extraordinarily difficult to keep that expression for 15 minutes.

YADNBU

Edited to wonder if he has descendants...

Edited

If you’re referring to Colarossi, then yes. His son was the model for Anteros (Eros) on the Shaftesbury Memorial on Piccadilly.

Clarinet1 · 29/06/2024 22:26

Puts me in mind of Colin Firth as Mr Darcy!

Black and white photos are quite flattering too.

Oh hello young man! 🥰

RainbowsAreNotTheOnlyFruit · 29/06/2024 22:12

Julia Margaret Cameron’s portrait of Angelo Colarossi (b.1838) as Iago, taken in 1867.

Ooh, yes. My son alerted me to a young Stalin a few years ago with a, "Mum, is it wrong to think Stalin was hot..?" 🤣

This has made my night 😂
