To ask what the most ridiculous thing you have ever spent money on is?

Mostly to make me feel better. I'm currently up and about because I have a hacking cough and can't sleep, and have just spent £6.50 on a baby lego crocodile on eBay.

Backstory: DS(6) has a Lego set which includes a family of crocodiles. Today a friend's toddler was over and took a shine to the baby crocodile, so he gave it to her to take home. He is totally unbothered, and knowing him will remain so, but I've felt sorry for the parent crocodiles all day, and have now spent actual real money to assuage my upset that two small pieces of plastic might be missing a third smaller piece of plastic. I even caught myself (briefly) worrying that the new baby crocodile isn't quite the right shade of green, and that they might know it's not really theirs.

My only defence is that I am quite pregnant and hormonal, and due to aforementioned cough have had very little sleep for the last few days. I'm honestly not usually this batshit...

Has anyone else spent money on anything so completely ridiculous?

A Stanley cup!

I resisted the trend for so long, and then got 'influenced' by family members.
Biggest waste of money ever!!

I thought it would be perfect to use on commute to work, but the pink ugly bastard was too big to fit in my cars drink holder. Then it rolled off the passenger seat and decided to leak its watery contents all over the car floor. Thought I had a faulty one, but no, this is what all Stanley's do apparently!

Don't get 'influenced' people!! 😂

Stupid toys for my dog, knowing full well he will dance around the garden with them for 2 minutes then settle down to destroy them in even less time. Some have cost £15 and have been called 'indestructible'.

Same! The amount I have spent on 'indestructible' toys only for them to have last a day is insane.

If anyone knows any proper good ones, I'm all ears!!

Blimey, what kind of house do you have that needs a suit of armour? 😁

I'm a bit of a history nerd :-D

Roller skates - I don't drive and had visions of myself skating everywhere I needed to go and I would look so cool. I've got them out twice and both times felt like I was too high and was scared of falling over. I'd like to try again but feel like I need a helmet which is another expense!

Oh I did this too, I had dreams of starting roller derby after I watched Whip It… forgot that I’m really uncoordinated and scared of contact sports

That doesn't sound like a waste of money AT ALL, I would love that!

It was an expensive way for someone to post you 2 slice of bread and a little drop cheese.

But at the time 100% thought it was worth it.

I love this thread. Thank you to all who have contributed so far!
I also have lost a single AirPod in my bed overnight, not once, but twice. Both times the right one. Searched for weeks. You can order replacements to match up from Apple, but not cheap.

I also fully relate to the washi tape. I may or may not have a stash. Can I just say anyone under the age of 12 will happily use that crap up for you 😂

Jellycatspyjamas · 25/06/2024 09:04

*I spent about £10 on an identical backup of my son's favourite teddy, which originally cost £1.99, just in case.

It's been hidden away for three years now.*

I did the same, a jellycat giraffe and rabbit are in pristine condition hidden in a cupboard for 7 years now. I figure if I have grandkids I can gift their parents favourite cuddle toys - and it did contribute to my user name.

Post separation I went to power wash the patio (previously my exs job). I couldn’t get the power washer to work so bought a new one, unboxed it and started using it. At that point I realised the old one did indeed work, I just didn’t connect it properly. I now own two power washers.

Once when I was drunk I apparently went on a washi tape buying spree, from multiple different vendors (many I think in China) which resulted in me getting random deliveries of washi tape for about 6 weeks after. To this day I still don’t know what I was planning to use it for

Whenever I see lovely washi tape I want to buy it but I can never figure out what I would use it for!

I was the proud owner of a cheese toastie subscription. Every 2 weeks I received all the necessary ingredients to create a toastie in the post. Funnily enough they went out of business quite quickly, my only defence was I was young and without responsibility.

So many of these posts chime with me, but this is uncanny - I, too, have a drawer packed with impulse-bought washi tape.

Shizzlestix · 25/06/2024 07:06

Shoes! I’ve lost loads of weight and my feet have shrunk. I’ve bought so many shoes, some don’t quite fit, some are still sat in the boxes, I’ve ended up wearing the same few pairs.

I went through a phase of buying jeans because I can get into them now without having to buy plus size. I ended up with about 7 pairs, sold 3 in a bundle on Vinted because they just didn’t suit me. I am forever looking at clothes. 😢

Cheese posties! I briefly got these too

When I was much much younger and not long after getting my first smart phone I spent about a fiver for an app - of a mirror.

Yup, it was basically just the camera. I've no idea what I was thinking.

I became obsessed with gardening on my flat balcony, without using pesticides.
a plague of aphids arrived and I researched how to get rid of them. Tried washing up liquid and water, baking powder etc but nothing worked.

i found out you can buy ladybirds online to help eat the aphids. So I spent £12 on about 7 ladybirds who arrived in a box in the post. I put them on the plants and then watched them fly away after a day or so 😂

This is hilarious. Would have been even funnier If you watched them fly away immediately after opening the box.

Femme2804 · 25/06/2024 00:11

Lots lots lots of designer bags. I spent £2k-£6k on a bag before. I love bags, but now i realise there is lots of mid range bags who also beautiful and cost less than my designer bags.

I got those fashion house books for our coffee table (LV, Chanel and Dior) they cost like £30 each and were donated to the charity shop about 6 months later. I can't afford to buy their handbag or any of their clothing, not sure what possessed me to buy them. I have no interest in fashion either.

Emmerald · 25/06/2024 00:03

I bought 2 handmade Christmas tree ornaments because I felt if i only bought one, he would be lonely and ostracised from the older ornaments I have (and be bullied) 🥲😂

Baby Havana's, sunglasses, beach towel and toiletry bag for my 3 month old baby to go to Cyprus - I have since given my head a wobble ...

😂😂😂 I did this for my pfb. My second one is going to be 3 months on our next holiday and she will be lucky to get a swim pants only.

We have 3 "Dollies".
DD got the original for her first Christmas, less than £10 from the Mamas and Papas factory shop that was near by. Within a few weeks I realised we needed a spare, and got a second from eBay for not much. A couple of years later, Dolly2 got properly lost, and I was so worried about being Dolly-less that I spent £60 on Dolly3 on eBay. Which obviously made Dolly2 turn up. Dolly3, all £60 of her, is still sitting in the bottom of my wardrobe. DD is nearly 13.

£25 on a hotwheels size character from Blaze and the Monster Machines. My little one asked for the set from Santa but they only came individually and one eluded me despite weeks of trawling toy shops. That one cost as much as the rest of the team together. He loved it though.

When DS was very little he was hugely into Thomas the Tank Engine and what he wanted now than anything was the Trackmaster Crash and Repair trains. Not sure they were ever officially available in the UK as they were stupidly expensive. After much searching I managed to get four of them at not too bad prices.

A few years later the big thing was Lego Ninjago. He wanted the Season 3 Ninjacopter set more than anything, but it had been discontinued. Paid £80 for an unopened one on eBay. He absolutely loved it, now he doesn't remember it.
