To ask what the most ridiculous thing you have ever spent money on is?

Mostly to make me feel better. I'm currently up and about because I have a hacking cough and can't sleep, and have just spent £6.50 on a baby lego crocodile on eBay.

Backstory: DS(6) has a Lego set which includes a family of crocodiles. Today a friend's toddler was over and took a shine to the baby crocodile, so he gave it to her to take home. He is totally unbothered, and knowing him will remain so, but I've felt sorry for the parent crocodiles all day, and have now spent actual real money to assuage my upset that two small pieces of plastic might be missing a third smaller piece of plastic. I even caught myself (briefly) worrying that the new baby crocodile isn't quite the right shade of green, and that they might know it's not really theirs.

My only defence is that I am quite pregnant and hormonal, and due to aforementioned cough have had very little sleep for the last few days. I'm honestly not usually this batshit...

Has anyone else spent money on anything so completely ridiculous?

I once spent nearly £100 on vet bills for a gerbil that could have been replaced for about £3 at the time. But we loved him..

Been there done that!!

A £300 vibration exercise plate .. used 2x and then collected dust under the bed for 2 more years. I couldn’t even give it away … it went in the bin.. why to this day I cannot tell you?!

This is the best thing I’ve seen all day 🐊

I bought, an admittedly adorable, crochet bear from a craft fair. I'm 51, know no small children, and I'm currently trying to clear clutter out from my house.

I was desperately trying to get pregnant, my last chance and so I ‘bought’ a pregnancy spell from a witch on EBay!

I became obsessed with gardening on my flat balcony, without using pesticides.
a plague of aphids arrived and I researched how to get rid of them. Tried washing up liquid and water, baking powder etc but nothing worked.

i found out you can buy ladybirds online to help eat the aphids. So I spent £12 on about 7 ladybirds who arrived in a box in the post. I put them on the plants and then watched them fly away after a day or so 😂

You're supposed to release them into a covered area like a polytunnel or under nets.

A colander … 😂 I have a plastic one from ikea that is more than adequate at home but I fell in love with this one. It’s in my caravan 🤣

Oh and an Aran sweater tea cozy the other day … I live in Ireland and just couldn’t resist it!

I think this is really cute.

I had to remove the Amazon app from my phone after I woke to realise I’d id bought 50 packets of moshi monsters in my sleep?!

Just come back from a hen party in Ibiza and I paid 10 euro for a lager, I was fuming when the waiter brought a half a pint to the table, really thought for the price it would of been a pint 🙄🤣

Same! The amount I have spent on 'indestructible' toys only for them to have last a day is insane.

If anyone knows any proper good ones, I'm all ears!!

My dog had an old hub cap that he happily played with like a frisbee, lasted him years!

Whenever I see lovely washi tape I want to buy it but I can never figure out what I would use it for!

Washi tape is perfect for sticking notes on your front door without leaving a sticky residue like sellotape did as we have full sun all afternoon and it went all melty

Oh I forgot, or the caravan that I bought, realised I wasn’t allowed to tow, did a driving course to learn how to tow it including a weekend in a hotel in Essex £1k, then 3 months later the car died and realised I hate caravanning. So yeah!

Justwingingit2005 · 25/06/2024 18:30

A wooden rabbit to keep the other wooden rabbit company. Because rabbits are unhappy if they live alone.

No regrets.

TheTempest · 25/06/2024 18:26

It’s a toss up between spending £3k and 2 weeks of my life to going to Spain to rescue a dog I saw on line (he’s the love of my life to be fair), crashing the car into a bus and that costing another £2k to fix…

or the kayak that I can’t use as the car I used to take it to the river died…

or the VR headset that I used constantly during lockdown and then got Ménière’s disease so I can’t use it without getting really dizzy and sick!

I got scammed by a fake online job....lost thousands. In hindsight it was so blooming obvious but I fell for it, everything looked real and genuine.

Someone could set up a good scam with this. Train them as homing ladybirds, sell them, wait for them to come home and sell them again and again and again.
😂🐞

Maybe (she said, darkly) they already have....

Wouldprefertobereading · 25/06/2024 18:17

£2,500 on huge canvas photos of my boys at 15 and 17, just before my eldest was leaving home for Uni and changing our little family unit forever. The kids hated them so I never hung them and they live in my wardrobe to this day.. 17 years later.

Bassetlover · 25/06/2024 18:14

A 3rd hand Basset Hound, wouldn't be without her though.
A mobile home, converted out of an old minibus, major repairs needed, of course!

Howareu · 25/06/2024 15:28

I bought a pair of massive silver angel wings, made of plaster or something similar, a bargain at £199(was £249)…I thought my teenage daughter would love them(to display on her bedroom wall? - they were huge 😂) I put them in the loft to save for her (16/18th? Birthday)…nearer the time, I thought WTF was I thinking?! I sold them online for probably £50 or something. SO ridiculous 🤦‍♀️

Consultations with psychic mediums when I was grieving. I spent thousands with many, many different ones and never got any comfort, reassurance or proof that any one of them had a gift. I believed because I needed to, and now I see how they took advantage of a vulnerable young woman who was heartbroken.

Me too - only the one reading, but he put me off so badly. I'd lost my wonderful dad and our dearly beloved family dog within three weeks of each other, over the Christmas period, and then my dad's much younger sister dropped dead very unexpectedly the day after our dog, so I was reeling. I paid for a telephone consultation with someone who had very good reviews, but it was pure cold reading - he kept going on and on about how I'd lost someone young (my dad was 94), about the terrible state I was in trying to deal with the finances (which had all been so straightforward that they were sorted in a single afternoon), just all sorts of rubbish/guesswork. Not one thing he said resonated with me at all, and he just got vaguer and vaguer as I kept saying 'No, sorry, that's not right.' It was awful. I was so much more upset by the end of the call - I do believe some people have a gift, but I would never have another reading. So sorry you've been hurt by it as well.

Shannith · 25/06/2024 13:25

Love your OP. I bought many bonkers things when DD was younger. Never as sweet as that though, mine were more panicked.

As a grown adult who should know better

A racehorse - well a leg (slow, so bought some more, also slow)
A designer's guild covered armchair (still have it 14 years later, still love it)
Recently some furniture wax for painted furniture. I'm never going to paint it.

A new, independent, ethical, organic, woman-owned plant shop opened in my neighbourhood.
I spent hundreds and hundreds on plants for every room in my house.
It looked amazing.
But because they were all organic and had been looked after incredibly well, all bar one of them croaked it under my care.

I quickly went back to Morrisons and B&M as my go-to plant suppliers which means spending much less and things actually living.
