Hi posting here as this thread seems to get the most traction.

I found out I was pregnant this morning. I haven’t had periods for 2 years as I’ve been on the pill and they’ve stopped them. I had no symptoms until recently. My belly is tiny, I’ve lost weight. I have been feeling so sick and dizzy, Saturday I went to a theme park with my daughter, I fainted and was sick everywhere. The medic came over and asked if there was any chance I could be pregnant and I laughed it off. I recovered and we went home.

Today I thought oh I will just take a test to rule it out. I was going shopping anyway so I didn’t specifically set out to buy a test, I just grabbed one with my shopping. I fully expected it to say negative, I was just doing it to humour myself. I knew there was an extremely slim chance but I was 99.99% sure it would be negative. I didn’t even look for 20 minutes as I was adamant it was a waste of time and would be negative. But no, two lines appeared. Because I left it so long I thought a possible false positive so I went out and got 6 more including a digi. All were dark positive and the digi said pregnant.

I went in to panic mode. I have not had sex in 30 weeks, the last time I had sex was November the 24th. I was dating somebody and things broke up after a few months as he moved abroad. I have not had sex or even dated since.

I called EPU, I explained the whole situation and they’ve said as I’m over 16 weeks, they can not take me under their care and I need to do an online referral for a midwife and urge the importance of the situation in my online referral. I have done an online referral and stressed they contact me asap. I can not find a direct number for the midwife’s, only the number for antenatal day Assesment unit. I don’t know what I should do, do I just go to a&e. Do I wait until the midwife’s have got back to me?

I am so scared. For all I know there’s more than one baby, the baby could be sick, the placenta could have developed incorrectly, the baby could be deformed, the baby could have a disability. Anything; because I haven’t been checked! So now I’m worrying!

I also drink a bottle of wine most weekends.

I am terrified something would have gone wrong but I’m in limbo until the midwife’s contact me back after they’ve received my referral. I don’t know what to do, do I go to A&E?? Am I going to be in trouble for not knowing until now?

I feel so uncomfortable sat here doing nothing about it until they’ve got back to me when I’m anywhere from 30-36 weeks pregnant. My other daughter was born at 33 weeks so I’m worrying!!!

please what do I do??? Do I go to a&e???

Don’t bother with a private scan - they are for bonding and sexing, not for identifying anomalies. If anything is wrong you would just be even more anxious waiting for a nhs scan. I would phone your local maternity unit.

MamaSleep · 23/06/2024 15:14

Oh you poor thing. What a shock.

Iloveeverycat · 23/06/2024 15:08

What a shock for you. I hope you get seen ASAP.

Bournetilly · 23/06/2024 15:07

You’ve probably already called 111 now, hopefully they send you to the day unit and you can get a scan asap. Hope all is well.

CaribbeanCupcake · 23/06/2024 15:06

OP I'm so sorry you must be terrified.

Agree with other posters, phone day assessment unit or maternity triage instead of waiting for 111 as you could be waiting hours.

Hope all is ok x

ChirpyBee · 23/06/2024 15:05

I'd go to maternity triage at the hospital and beg them to do something.

Phoning 111 is probably the correct thing to do though, I fear you'd be left waiting at A&E as you wouldn't be seen as immediately at risk.

Clauz · 23/06/2024 13:42

If no one will help or you keep getting fobbed off, show up to A&E. Tell them you've got pain, having dizzy, fainting episodes, and you've just had a positive pregnancy test but didn't think you could possibly be pregnant as you've not had sex for over 6 months (or however long). Don't leave until they check you. Until they do you won't know what you're dealing with. Best of luck with everything. I would not hesitate to be persistent and don't take no for an answer. Can only imagine the worry but hopefully the checks will be ok and put your mind at rest.

Edited

This is NOT what a&e is for.

My local clinic doesn’t have appointments till Thursday, 2nd closest don’t have appointments until Tuesday. I’m not sure what they could do aside from confirm the pregnancy?

I am just terrified of giving birth alone. My 33 weeker came very fast. Fortunately I was already in hospital but my pain went from mild to extreme within an hour and baby was out after 2 hours. I’m terrified of giving birth home alone and baby not surviving due to prematurity and no NICU doctors.

I decided to call 111 instead. I’m waiting for a call back from a doctor

Good luck @Goldflamingo

You must be very worried - hopefully you’re seen soon. You need proper maternity care asap!

Let us know if you can, I hope everything is fine.

JanglyBeads · 23/06/2024 14:58

Good point from a PP that this pregnancy could be further along than 33 weeks, assuming the OP was having coitus prior to the Nov date.

Also, being bipolar is surely in itself a risk factor, for her MH?

Beautifulbythebay · 23/06/2024 14:57

If your pregnancy was planned and registered you would go and be seen at maternity. So go now. Pain needs investigated. They aren't going to tell you off!!

waryandbored · 23/06/2024 14:54

Hi OP. I can imagine your shock. I agree with all PPs saying to call your local maternity triage. They are the best placed to help you as soon as possible. Your GP will only refer you and I imagine 111 will too. Lots of luck and positive thoughts your way.

Missingpotatocroquettes · 23/06/2024 14:40

What does "sorry but no" mean?

It means she thinks the op is making this up.

madameparis · 23/06/2024 14:52

What a shock for you @Goldflamingo I hope you get a call back from 111 asap. Be really pushy and emphasise that you have been experiencing cramps for 3 days and you really feel you need to be seen/scanned as a matter of urgency.

Do you have a family member or friend nearby who you can call for support? Xx

Rinoachicken · 23/06/2024 14:51

No one should or can advise her at this point - not 111, not her GP, not us - this os a pregnancy full of unknowns with limited to no information to be able to draw any conclusions or give any assurances.

The ONLY information we have is that previous pregnancy was premature birth, that mum is on medication not recommended in pregnancy, that she’s at least 30wks and that she’s now experiencing cramps.

Anyone not advising her to seek midwifery care immediately is an idiot.

Wot a shock. I found out I was pregnant when I was 45 and 28 weeks gone. That was a shock so I can only imagine how you must feel. Please keep us posted and best wishes.

Sorry 18 weeks

ThreeLocusts · 23/06/2024 14:50

OP hope you're OK for the moment. Just to take a little bit of pressure off - in spite of all they say about no safe alcohol limits, I know someone whose mum drank unhealthily throughout pregnancy and she's still OK.

And an Italian friend tells me that a limited quantity of red wine used to be encouraged in pregnancy - b/o iron content I guess? So the bottle of wine on the WE doesn't have to weigh on your mind. It's done.

I hope you get reassuring news soon.

MintTwirl · 23/06/2024 14:50

What a shock for you OP. I hope it all works out for you,

An immediate scan doesn't make any difference now as it's too late for an abortion by your dates. Hopefully a midwife will contact you soon, they'll ve able to listen to babies heartbeat and arrange a scan then. Best of luck, there's time to get your head around it all before the birth but it must be a huge shock.

A scan now would date the pregnancy.

ChickpeaPie · 23/06/2024 14:49

There’s some terrible advice on here. What does anyone think 111 will advise? They’ll say see a midwife.
A&E will refer ti maternity.
The only thing to do in this situation is to phone maternity triage/DAU or whatever it’s called in your hospital. Tell them you’ve just found out you’re pregnant, over 30 weeks gestation with abdominal pain and history of preterm labour. They will see you, ctg and obs, obstetric review and scan at nearest availability.

Just call or go to the day assessment unit - don’t waste your trim messing about with 111. You could be being seen in DAU by the time they even call you back.

You have had no antinatal care, high risk pregnancy - they are not going to turn you away - the midwife’s will be as anxious as you to start getting some info in the system and run obs and tests to figure out what’s what, how far along, current status etc and make sure you and baby start getting the right care asap.

just call them or just go - it’s midwives you need now - anyone else is just a delay

Bemusedandconfusedagain · 23/06/2024 14:47

Similar happened to me, although I wasn't quite so far along. I called the local maternity assessment unit and they had me go straight in to be checked. It was the number that people use later on in pregnancy for issues. They said not being registered was no problem, they see people all the time who aren't registered with them - e.g. visiting family in another part of the country.

I'm sure if you call them and explain you've just found out and have symptoms of potential early labour they will tell you to come in now.

No, don’t phone… go in! It’s not a regular appointment you need. Triage midwives are available at hospital 24/7. You need to go, now.

Tel12 · 23/06/2024 14:46

111 is a good call for today. They will be able to advise you further. Try to keep as calm as possible. One step at a time. Tomorrow you can get the ball rolling with more help available. Obviously if you feel unwell then go to a and e. Hopefully you have some support IRL.
