…with my nail clipper.

AIBU to fire her over this?

(Also - have never done an AIBU before and can’t figure out how to do the poll).

If she worked in an office and was clipping her nails in the toilets , yes , she should possibly be fired , but cleaning someone's house , no .

You've said you know her well , she lives nearby and sometimes babysits , don't the pros outweigh the cons ?

Of course , tell her you know , and get her to promise she won't do it again . That seems more fair .

I've never come across an office where someone would be fired for clipping their nails in the ladies.

I think what adds to my irritation is that she clearly felt she was doing something wrong

You also said in your op that she acted sheepishly.

She comes across as if she's scared and nervous. that she feels below you .

It could be she took them to the children's bathroom because you make her nervous.

People act sheepish when they are aware they have done something wrong. There really is no need to diagnose everyone with imaginary feelings.

sweetnessandlighter · 21/06/2024 15:11

God almighty. She was hardly scrubbing your bog with your toothbrush, was she? What a weird thing to get upset about. I can't believe you're considering taking away her livelihood for it.

countcalculia · 21/06/2024 15:11

she’s actually not really good at cleaning either

You had me at this. Get rid asap.

Ick ick ick ick ick!!!! I would have wanted to put the toenails in a cup of tea and make her drink them. DIRTY SCRUFF

Why do you assume it’s toe nails?

Naliny · 21/06/2024 14:54

Personally, I do find it a bit gross but honestly if she would have asked me (because she had torn a nail or they were getting in her way) I would have 100% said of course, use them. She always has drinks, spends her entire time here on the phone, etc - I really couldn’t care less.

I think what adds to my irritation is that she clearly felt she was doing something wrong, otherwise she would have clipped her nails then and there, in our bathroom, next to the bedroom where I am sat working. Instead, she felt the need to remove the clippers from our cupboard, take them upstairs into the kids’ bathroom where she thought I wouldn’t notice, and then return them back to our cupboard. She exited the kids bathroom as soon as she heard me come upstairs, but continued with the clipping once I had returned to my bedroom. It’s this behavior that irks me the most.

She’s left now and I didn’t bring it up. I do think we will have to let her go soon, but that’s more because we need someone who just is more thorough (even though I do not tend to leave shit out in my toilet, as some posters seem to believe). I think the nail clipper might have just been the final straw.

Thanks to those who provided rational feedback (one way or the other) - it has been insightful!

OP you'll get a lot of virtue signalling, sniffy replies on here. But, unless you work in a nail saloon, it's never acceptable to be cutting your nails at work, unless they were damaged.

She's lovely babysits etc and seems to be getting quite comfortable. Enough to use your personal things without asking.

It's your decision - do you need her enough to overlook things like this, or do you want to keep it professional? If the latter I'd let her go.

Edited

How about using the loo, washing her hands with the soap in the bathroom, and drying them on the towels?

Allowed?
Getting too comfortable?

Her bum touched the loo, her hands touched the toilet paper, the soap, the taps, and the towels, after all.

Or what if she used the loo and didn't wash her hands?!
How would you ever know if she just flushed, pulled up her knickers, and walked away...

Really? Well fair enough if you are happy with that.
I would find that really cheeky behaviour for her to do that without even the common courtesy of asking.

The drinks or the nail clippers? But yes, I would be/am fine with either.

This is the woman who is the only adult bar DH and me who goes in our bedroom, she changes our sheets. There's an intimacy involved in the relationship and I think it's best served with relaxed give and take.

So a cleaner probably wouldn't grow her nails too long, right?

Just as a nanny to babies or toddlers probably wouldn't wear dangly earrings, or a site engineer probably wouldn't wear an outfit she'd wear for a summer wedding to work.

Give people a little credit for intelligence.

I don't know what you mean, honestly. I think it's entirely believable that she was cleaning, snagged a nail and realised the rest needed a trim so she took care of that before she snagged any more. I just can't see what the big deal is, at all.

Cleaning is exactly the kind of work that can make you realise your nails are too long. Confused

You're a disgusting, dirty sod aswell then!

@Caravaggiouch - not only do I not have any barbicide I’ve only got a vague idea what it is 😉

Another cleaner I had accidentally used face flannels as cleaning cloths. I could see exactly how the misunderstanding arose, I had the cleaning cloths stacked in an identical container downstairs. Again I never said anything - just put them through a 60 wash and next time left the cleaning cloth basket out and the flannels basket away. For me, there is a compromise with cleaners, good ones are hard to find and keep. I’ve let mine know that leaving 10-15 minutes early is fine (she’s been with us for a while and works without stopping for almost 3 hours) - I view that 10 minutes as a very tiny perk in lieu of a coffee break (she always politely declines drinks)

in the OP’s example if I felt strongly about the clippers I would just replace that particular pair and put all similar ‘out of bounds’ items away.

Clipping her nails in the office toilet.... with your nail clippers... that she did not ask to borrow?

EllyGi · 21/06/2024 14:58

Ew! No from me. She shouldn't have done that. It's unhygienic, gross and not the right place or time. It's very unprofessional thing to do so I would be looking for a new cleaner.

Everythingiscalmfornow · 21/06/2024 14:57

CelesteCunningham · 21/06/2024 14:45

No, she never asked, and that was absolutely fine.

There is a every chance she used my nail clippers at some point in the 6 years she's been coming here, they sit out on the dresser. I've no problem with that either, and I imagine she'd know that.

Really? Well fair enough if you are happy with that.

I absolutely view everyone like this, even myself 🫠😂 we're all filthy animals imo.

Whatever floats your boat 🤷🏻‍♀️

I am astonished that it's even something you're concerned about! And even more so that lots of people agree that nail clipping is a sackable offence.

After the thread yesterday with the poster having a fit of the vapours because her cleaner dared have a ciggie out the back door, I'd assumed this was a piss-take about the oiks getting above themselves and taking blasted liberties.

But no.

It is indeed gobsmacking.

This woman cleans your sinks and loos, yet you say "So grim" when your precious nail clipper has touched her fingernails?

Just wow.

Totally.

She's OK to both look after your children and clean up your, literal and metaphorical, shit, but not to touch the sacred nail clippers.

mathanxiety · 21/06/2024 14:55

ABCDEFUMORE · 21/06/2024 14:49

Jesus Christ - get some standards babe.

A cleaner is an employee. I wouldn't walk into my employer's office and borrow their nail file without asking. It's called manners and boundaries and it's actually reasonable for different people to view things differently. You - however - come in all facist light with a MY VIEW IS THE ONLY VIEW to make an OP feel like she should be crawling on the floor, so VERY thankful that she gets to pay money to a person for clipping their nails with her clipper. THE HONOUR.

Also, it's LOSE, not LOOSE (in your next comment). Love how you've come bounding in all high and mighty, DELIGHTED to shit on another poster's perfectly reasonable question and you can't even fucking spell. Or use punctuation.

Is she allowed to breath the same air as you or is she just a peasant to you.
Grow the fuck up. Classic keyboard warrior saying this shit then a few sentences later 'try being nice' 😂

The phrase "keyboard warrior" springs to mind.

Oh wait.

It is grim. There is also a small risk of passing on a bloodborne virus in "sharing" personal grooming items that have the potential to break skin.
