We need the security services to shut the group down when they are carrying out what can be described as terrorist methods to influence govt policy.

On another thread on another board, far far away, I questioned the multi-national sponsorships and the new memberships of the Invictus Games and asked what's that all about? Seems like a load of Invictus-washing of undeserving reputations to me, and I know a lot of veterans agree and want to retrench to the Warrior Games.

It's why I don't think the UK government (i.e. the living bellend that is Johnny Mercer MP (Con)) should be trying to host the Invictus Games without proper public consultation about the sponsors, the financials, who's involved, etc.

I could understand Just Stop Oil getting involved with that.

But it hasn't got us talking about that has it? It's just got us talking about the harm to Stonehenge.

I agree and I do everything I can and would like to do more but I don't think the tactics are good

Exactly. None of the people who think this is a sensible tactic have provided any evidence of it actually working.

Headline grabbing action gets us all talking about our imminent extinction and that our a governments are not doing enough. In fact the current lots have actively encouraged the extraction of more fossil fuels rather than invest in renewables. I’m furious and we all should be. If getting arrested wouldn’t ruin my career and therefore my family’s financial security I would be going the same.

Why Stonehenge when they could go after the big carbon and oil polluters that are associated with financial systems like Stock Markets, certain Banks / Banking Corporations, tech giants, distribution giants, and the huge polluting fossil fuel multi-nationals?

They have been doing this but the media don’t report it.

Would be better to hack air booking sites with alternatives eg can you do a zoom call/ get a train or give flyers on SUV damage to roads and asthma outside SUV sales showrooms suggesting the most environmentally friendly car availability there instead

Their aim isn’t to persuade individuals to reduce their carbon footprint. Their aim is to stop the UK gov from approving new fossil fuel projects.

Agree.

Why Stonehenge when they could go after the big carbon and oil polluters that are associated with financial systems like Stock Markets, certain Banks / Banking Corporations, tech giants, distribution giants, and the huge polluting fossil fuel multi-nationals?

Why Stonehenge when the people who love it are more likely to be 'hippie' and alternative lifestyle & belief types of people, probably use less and recycle more, love the landscape and the earth's magical properties, and care deeply about the environment?

I've been involved with the campaign(s) against the Stonehenge tunnel, and I can't recall Just Stop Oil ever doing anything to help.

15000 people attended solstice there a couple of days ago. Which event do you think was the greater threat to the lichen and local ecosystem, that or two of the stones receiving a handful of coloured cornstarch?

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c7224qlenmeo

Climate change is an impending large scale extinction event. Activists are trying to draw attention to the cause, and whether you or I agree with the method & it's efficacy or not it's fucking wild to be more concerned about if the lichen at a monument survives than the fact that global warming is projected to extinguish over one-third of the earth's animal and plant species by 2050 if man-made emissions don't change.

Edited

Well put.

They appear to be going for the wrong targets. A lot of new age midsummer celebrators are climate friendly. AutumnCrow · 22/06/2024 09:32

I think it's fair enough to say that the tactics and antics of Just Stop Oil have put you ('one') off Just Stop Oil.

There nevertheless remains the critical problem of the climate emergency.

In order to make more people care, more effective tactics are needed, because just sometimes not all publicity is good publicity.

In order to actually do something about it, we all have to get our heads around the scale of the carbon pollution coming out of China, the US, China, Russia and Japan, the pollution of e.g. Africa and South Asia, and the destruction of the rain forest - and countries' various consumer roles in this. The solution, should we earthlings find one in time, has to involve international governmental agreements.

However, we currently appear to have a backdrop of bad actors trying to reduce people's faith in 'foreign' governments and courts, denigrating international initiatives, and stalling cross-border co-operation. Countries are hunkering down.

And Just Stop Oil are directing their efforts at Stonehenge? No-one can make that make sense for me.

Runssometimes · 22/06/2024 09:27

I think the massive road being constructed under Stonehenge is going to do far more damage than a bit of orange cornflour, frankly. Governments need to wake up otherwise our kids are going to face a much harder life than we did. For everyone that says the JSO puts you off, what should they do? What do you do to take action? I’m not sure that I completely agree with JSO but it gets in the news with is woefully silent on climate change generally. And the election debates have been very muted on what’s the greatest threat we face. Nothing will drive mass immigration like climate change, or global security. We are on course for 2 degree warming which will see huge parts of this country underwater in 50 years and we appear to be sleepwalking into it.
Today I’m going to the Restore Nature Now March in central London. It’s 300 charities and will be loads of families. Bet it’ll barely get a mention in MSM

IcecreamWhatSandwich · 22/06/2024 08:54

It seems frankly stupid to argue that they have "turned you off their cause". What, you have now decided to be in favour of global warming because you're not happy that someone put powder paint on Stonehenge?

Janiie · 22/06/2024 08:50

Meadowfinch · 20/06/2024 00:58

I have never found orange cornflour terrifying, so I do not regard them as terrorists. They do not strike fear into my heart.

They are environmental vandals. I'm sure Wiltshire police will arrest them, inconvenience them, charge them and then bail them. The security services will already have them on radar, lest they try to glue themselves to the M25 in rush hour.

I can't get too worked up about them really.

This.

Terrorists Confused. They are vandals and polite ones at that. They get people talking about them which is surely what their aim is.

ThatAgileGoldMoose · 22/06/2024 08:41

why should the govt listen to the general public or even the scientists etc if the govt knows more about climate change etc than what the average joe suggests.

"the scientists" (the entire global population of scientists who study environmental change) have been trying to warn the govt(s) of the impending large scale chaos and extinction events, and have calculated and shared countless action strategies to address it, over many decades.

Do not mistake public protests by JSO to be the only action being taken, or to be ill informed action.

The British government thinks in 4 year stints. Most governments also think short-term. The truth is that meaningful action to tackle the issue has become a case of radical global lifestyle change that isn't popular with voters because we all like convenience and holidays, and it certainly isn't popular with those who line pockets in the current generation. All of which explain government inaction better than the government knowing better than Joe public.

Dontcallmescarface · 20/06/2024 09:17

Thanks for the TED talk but that wasn't my point as well you know. Those birds don't know that they maybe damaging an ancient monument doing what comes naturally. JSO did. It's more than just the stones it's the eco system around them. Whilst it maybe ok to say "ah well it's just cornstarch, no harm done", you don't know that. People with far more knowledge than me and, I suspect you, are concerned that the damage done to the ancient lichen may result in it failing to thrive. So whilst JSO claim to be "caring for our environment", yesterdays actions show that when it comes down to it they are clueless when it comes to the consequences of their actions on the natural world. Should that lichen be damaged and eventually die out....well it won't be the oil industry that will be totally to blame, JSO can take some credit for helping it on it's way.

"Terrorists" is a bit OTT in my opinion, but my opinion of JSO has sunk even lower.

Gladanotthwrteamonesomething · 21/06/2024 06:52

I see your points.

So they get in their cars and drive to stonehedge (protester questioned on tv said at least they didn't fly) to throw paint to protest.

Meanwhile a small number of super rich with their own planes ignore them. Did Taylor Swift even reply to their comments about her having a private plane. If they just targeted people that use private planes, Formula 1, the thousands of households using oil for heating (promoting use of solar and heat pumps instead) they just appear to destroy things. So people IMO turn away.

Headline grabbing stunts are what get the attention which is the point. It reminds us all that our situation is perilous.

But they didn't. They stopped a truck because it was carrying oil. Vegetable oil.

They are a special sort of stupid.

That's misinformation. This rumour was circulated by Sky News, but was swiftly debunked and Sky took the page down.

i guess then at some point history will reveal who was correct in the end

fair points, but also blocking roads and vandalism also does not, if they want to truly make a difference what about the trojan horse method of joining these corporations and focusing their efforts that way ?

I should of reworded it, as the govts own scientists and or if they use private corporations instead of general scientists for the intel on climate etc

personally they could create a corporation and begin research and development on technologies that will help save the environment ?

This is already happening! But none of it matters if the gov keep approving new fossil fuel projects.

I disagree they are using terrorism tactics. Do you have any suggestions for how to get through to the government on approving new fossil fuel projects? Serious question. Because people have been campaigning in traditional ways for years and the gov haven’t been listening.

but at the same time most of the general public will think its pointless actions and basically using threats to want the change of govt policy = terrorism tatics.
and those that can already help the environment presumably are eg developing better tech etc
