We need the security services to shut the group down when they are carrying out what can be described as terrorist methods to influence govt policy.

Do you think that having taken a lot of measures already that I haven’t considered it ?

It fails because public transport in my rural village is not fit for purpose. First bus out gets me to work at 10:30am, last back means I would have to leave at 4pm.

I think you have done a great deal to help We have done almost everything on your list Although we had a petrol car rather than a diesel car.
Our first solar panel still heats our water after 25 years. Luckily our back garden faces South do we do generate a lot of electricity in our more modern ones. We have also added battery.
We deliberately chose a home near our places of work. The bus service over the years has dwindled although I can cycle 3 miles to a train station for an hourly local service that connects to a mainline.
My worry about EV is how the minerals are mined and their sustainability. I know that is hypocritical as I have a battery for the panels and phones etc.
Hopefully, everybody can do some of the things your list. For many it maybe that they can't afford and EV or stuck in a flat that has no access to a charging point.
However, I think some of the actions of JSO is alienating a lot of people. You need the people on your side to actually make change.

Stone henge is a henge made of stones. The field 400+ meters away from it is not stone henge.

Fireyflies · 19/06/2024 22:36

Yes you did. You said "the government approved a plan to build a tunnel under stone henge"

The tunnel is slightly further away from the stones than the current road.

They're building the tunnel under the site. The site is Stone Henge. I didn't say they were building the tunnel under the stones. It's called the Stone Henge World Heritage Site.

Fireyflies · 19/06/2024 22:40

I don't think drawing parallels with the Suffragettes is helpful tbh. Granting votes to women required one simple act of parliament and was entirely within the gift of the British government. It did just need political will. Finding the technologies, political and economic solutions to move the entire world away from fossil fuels is a million times more complex.

cupcaske123 · 19/06/2024 22:26

It's moving the A303 under part of the site. I didn't say it was going under the stones!

How did throwing themselves under a horse, carrying out bombings and arson attacks win women the vote ?

Sometimes it takes more than polite petitions.

Mary Richardson, the suffragette who slashed the Rokeby Venus, went on to become a prominent member of the British Union of Fascists. Some people are just drawn to aggro for the sake of aggro.

Many of the actions of the suffragettes did nothing for their cause. Hunger strikes and forced feeding gained them support but arson and bombings just played into the hands of those who thought women too irrational and governed by emotions to vote. What really won it for women was persistent campaigning, persuasive and logical argument and the First World War.

Just Stop Oil are great at grabbing attention but terrible at winning over the public. All they do is damage their own cause while simultaneously making life harder for everyone else.

I do that too.

So you don’t need a car then

Fireyflies · 19/06/2024 22:21

No it's bleeding not! It took me 30 seconds to double check the unlikely sounding idea that they would try to tunnel under the actual stones. https://stonehengealliance.org.uk/a303-stonehenge-references/a303-stonehenge-consultation-2018/a303-stonehenge-scheme-images/

Why would you believe something like that and not take the time to check whether it's correct?

It's moving the A303 under part of the site. I didn't say it was going under the stones!

Which is a massive shame - it is such a joy to see Stonehenge as you drive by.

I agree, I always like seeing the stones as I drive down there. It was even better before they removed the direct road from the A303, as we used to stop for a coffee there. Now you have to drive 2 miles away from the road, go to a visitor centre and get on a bus to see the stones!

SocoBateVira · 19/06/2024 22:20

It would be more logical and sympathetic if they targeted OPEC countries but that might come at some personal risk and cost, so they won't do it.

Yep! Imagine trying this sort of shit in Saudi Arabia.

People who care about the planet’s future also do that. There’s more than one approach.

Yep, thankfully there are people who care about the planet standing for parliament. But I'm not aware of any of the JSO rabble?

The government did not approve a road under stone henge. They wanted to widen the A303 which has a single track bit near stone henge which is always a traffic jam. They agreed (at the request of English Heritage I believe) to make a big tunnel for the bit of the road near stone henge so that the view of the road didn't spoil people's enjoyment of the stones.

Which is a massive shame - it is such a joy to see Stonehenge as you drive by.

Have they been infiltrated by oil companies? It seems the only explanation as they are doing such a great job at turning people away from the environmental cause.

SnowDiaries · 19/06/2024 21:24

Just Stop Oil's German equivalent also claimed that the orange paint they sprayed on the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin would 'just wash off in the rain'. It didn't. Cleaning the porous sandstone took three months, costing €140k of taxpayer's money.

Orange paint on stones - meh nobody dies. Can’t get worked up about it.

Climate change - meh nobody … oh, wait.

🤔🤯

Why not stand for election? Nothing to stop them ?

Leaving aside the criminal damage of an ancient monument and the disgraceful act of endangering rare species, I wonder whether they considered the powerful religious significance that Stonehenge holds for Pagans.

Would they have vandalised a synagogue or a mosque? I very much doubt it, because they are cowards as well as fuckwits.

They deserve nothing but utter contempt for their actions.

Exactly, in my old school many students could ask for the Solstice off as it was their religious or worshable day.

That JSO took action lead to people reading that article.

EsmaCannonball · 19/06/2024 22:04

It's the constantly going after soft targets that alienates the public from Just Stop Oil and makes their stunts counterproductive. It's not like Greenpeace sailing in front of whalers or women camping on Greenham Common. It would be more logical and sympathetic if they targeted OPEC countries but that might come at some personal risk and cost, so they won't do it.

The whole debacle of Baillie Gifford and the Hay Literary Festival tells you how grandiose these people are, and how unworldly about the way things work. They thought that given the choice between its investors and sponsoring a literary festival, an investment fund would choose the festival. Nothing they have done so far has done a jot for the environment but they are making life a lot harder for free-to-access museums, galleries and heritage sites in a way that will gradually chip away at the visitor experience of those places. It won't matter to Just Stop Oil, though, as they all seem rich enough to jet around the world in a way that suggests free entry places don't really matter to them.

cupcaske123 · 19/06/2024 21:51

You seem to have deliberately misinterpreted what I meant. The government have approved a plan to build a road under Stone Henge which, in my opinion, is an act of vandalism. Therefore the government calling this an act of vandalism is bare faced cheek.

I didn't call them heroes.

Ah! so they're increasing the reform vote?

Absolutely! Have a look on twitter - there's right wingers all over it saying how this illustrates how net zero has gone too far and Labour's net zero plans need to stop because that would be giving these people what they want.

GreigeO · 19/06/2024 21:53

LOL at everyone tutting over disrespecting the witches!
