To be angry at sisters Eras tour present??

I have two tween DDs who are Taylor obsessed atm. Was gutted when I didn’t get a code to get them tickets.

Well yesterday my sister came round, and told me she had a surprise for the girls. Three eras tour tickets for me and the girls!! The girls (and me) were so excited, youngest ran off to show her aunt what outfit she was going to wear, and oldest kept announcing that it was the best day of her life.

and then my sister said: “it’s a good thing your DH has the weekend off too, he can drive you to the airport!”. Well I felt like bingo in that one episode of bluey. Airport? I’m not going to the airport?

Turns out the tickets are in London. This Sunday. We live in Ireland. My sister bought the tickets, but now I’ll have to book flights and hotel. I have work on Monday so I’ll have to try book that off. We have a family holiday coming up as well as my best friends hen party so really do not have the money for flights and a hotel, if I can even find a hotel this late notice.

I just wish she’d come to me first before telling the girls, as now I’m either going to have to crush their dreams or somehow find a few hundred quid to get us all to London.

AIBU to be so angry at my sister (even tho I think she thought she was doing a nice thing.) and to think that a present should not put the recipient out of pocket…. Sorry I actually don’t even know what I’m expecting people to say back I’m just in need of a good rant.

Good you decided to go, but man she could have given you some time to prepare… very thoughtless and more about her.

How would she have felt if you said sorry we already have plans, or I just don’t have the money. Insane

Okay I think I’m just going to do it! Sent a text to a third cousin who I haven’t spoken to in years in London and she said she’s got a blow up bed in a sitting room.

Trying to decide between flights or the rail and sail that PP have mentioned. Sound very good value!

I think we will just have to cut back on a few day trips and meals out on holidays- but I think my girls would much rather see Miss Swift than go to a waterpark.

Am still silently raging at my sister, especially as I had never mentioned wanting to take the girls to London for this, but hearing them sing along to Taylor in their bedroom and my older girl teaching her sister all the different ad libs- I know I can’t not take them.

thanks everyone who gave very good practical advice, especially the lovely person who offered us a place to stay!

Now time to search my wardrobe for my best eras outfit!!!

It sounds as if your sister just didn’t think and got excited about it.

Flights are good value and rail and sail also good but you have to get from is it Holyhead to London so…

For whilst you’re over here look out for Pizza Express deals if you do eat out, sign up to Greggs app and you get a free eg pasty or bake and hot drink.

Could you sell your ticket to help cover the costs? Still fly over with them and drop them at the door and collect them after? Depending on their age of course. You could recoup a good few hundred for one ticket that could ease the financial pressure.

OMG I have just googled the cost of tickets - how does she have so many fans when tickets start at £400???

Other than that sorry to hear the present will cost more - that is very thoughtless of your sister.

Tickets don’t start at £400 - mine were less than £100 each. We bought an album over 18 months ago to ensure we had codes and therefore reasonably priced presale tickets. We booked the hotel the day she announced the dates and then bought the tickets and train. All in cost £500 for two tickets and 3 nights in London in August. Have no idea where these crazy prices rumours have come from - that was greedy US touts.

pinkhousesarebest · 19/06/2024 21:10

However insurmountable the obstacles are, I have a feeling you will find a solution OP. And, trust me, you will remember this concert forever. ( Speaking as someone who was not that fussed but omg).

I can't get my head around this, you got tickets people would sell a kidney for. Your sister has done an amazing thing for your girls.

I can't get my head around the fact that you can't understand why the op is concerned about needing to organise a day off work with limited notice [I wouldn't even be allowed that day off regardless of if I wanted to go or not!], and then to find potentially hundreds of points to organise travel to another country and hotel, all at late notice so increased prices and limited availability.

How - and why - is it so difficult for some posters to understand that not everyone is in the position to just drop everything and rustle up quite a lot of money in less than a week's time?!

Gosh you are quite ungrateful. Did you see that thousands of people are trying to get those tickets and they are selling for £2K each kn third party sites? It’s a unique experience and show and you are moaning about organising travel. You should be so grateful! You can go to a waterpark any day of the year every year forever! 🤦🏻‍♀️

It's not ungrateful when or have to potentially spend hundreds on travel and accommodation!

What's so hard for people to understand? It can and is both an amazing thing and massively unnecessary stressful

whynotwhatknot · 19/06/2024 20:30

your sis was out of order to o that but i hope you can work someting out

dont try an come bak the same day takes ages to get out of concerts an then onto a train queues are massive

I'd be annoyed initially too but your DDs will remember this for the rest of their lives and the annoyance and expense will be forgotten (eventually ;)

Willmafrockfit · 19/06/2024 20:17

of course yabu

You're pretty lucky if you would be able to get time off work this Monday so you can fly with two children to another country to see a concert on Sunday night.
This is not easy for everyone.

SuuzeeeQ · 19/06/2024 19:53

maybe you should spend some time reading the posts of all the upset mums who can’t find Eras Tour tickets.

Maybe you should read the million posts on this thread saying she's not ungrateful for the tickets, she's been made to be incredibly stressed because:

  1. Her sister told the children BEFORE even consulting her
  2. Her sister assuming she could afford the £££ travel costs TO ANOTHER COUNTRY
  3. Her sister knew about it for TWO WEEKS and stayed silent so op only has FOUR DAYS to find money and potentially get in trouble with work
  4. Arrange international travel, accommodation and the unexpected pressure

.... It doesn't take away from her sister's gesture, but it also doesn't mean the op has to be 'grateful' for all the accompanied stress that didn't need to happen

justamoomintroll · 19/06/2024 19:57

Hopefully one day you will be able to look back and see how nasty your reaction to this was. Being angry with your sister for getting your kids tickets that she could have just sold to make a profit, and to say that she was mean for wanting to tell your kids the exciting news herself.

Yes, she should have checked about flights etc beforehand, but she probably wanted to surprise you a bit as well. But no, you are just angry. I’m not a TS fan whatsoever, but if I had kids who was dying to go I would not have written this post. Your sister should have sold those tickets and not get anything for your kids or you next year.

kids next year.

SuuzeeeQ · 19/06/2024 19:53

She said she was angry at her DS, does not sound like someone who is deeply appreciative of getting tickets to the most in demand concerts of the year.

Rail and sail would be a great option if you're good travellers. Can spend the entire journey to London learning lyrics and dance moves. The journey back will be full of memories especially if it's their first concert.

Hope you manage to sort something out and enjoy it.

MrRydersParlourGame · 19/06/2024 19:43

Oof, agree with everything but I think it's a good decision to just grit your teeth, try to take the gift in the spirit it was intended (however cack-handedly executed!) and have a great time.

This is one of those slightly annoying, awkward curve-balls of life that I think will actually end up being an amazing life-long memory for your girls. That's what you'll ultimately remember, and the mad scrabble for flights and accommodation will become part of the great story. Lean in, as Sheryl Sandberg would say 😂.

Have fun!

GinToBegin · 19/06/2024 19:42

OP, I get why you’re unhappy about the way your sister has gone about things, but I think you need to Shake It Off. (Sorry.)

You can make this work, (but I get that you shouldn’t have to at such short notice) and your kids will have an evening they will never forget - and hopefully you’ll have a ball, too. I’m not a TS fan at all, but the reviews have been really good, it seems like she puts on quite the show.

Amsooverthis · 19/06/2024 19:13

I'm just travelling back from seeing her yesterday. It is amazing, you'll love it, just try and put the other stuff to one side!

stichguru · 19/06/2024 19:12

You should never get someone any present that involves hassle and them spending more money without checking with them first. However unless "getting a code" is code for "getting free concert tickets", how much were they going to cost? Like you presumably could have afford concert tickets if they hadn't been gifted, so maybe that money goes on the other stuff and you haven't lost out?

Backhometothenorth · 19/06/2024 19:06

So glad you've decided to go for it! You are going to have an absolutely amazing time!
