To think I had every right to be in the right hand lane when driving the speed limit on a dual carriage way

Dh thinks not.

So I’ve had to do a speed awareness course a while ago so do my best to keep to speed limits at all times.

Driving home on a curving dual carriage way on a slight tilt. 50 limit signs every few yards and a speed camera sign. The lane on the right turns into a fly over which I needed to keep on. So I was in the right hand lane driving at 50. A car came right up to my bumper and kept flashing. I stayed in the lane and pointed at the signs. He kept flashing then overtook me in a dramatic fashion, zoomed off( so breaking the speed limit) then slowed down so ended up driving not that faster than me but still over the limit.

Dh said I should have pulled over. I don’t understand why. Nobody on that road should be doing over 50 so what would be the benefit of me pulling over if I’m doing 50?

Your husband is right.
Stay in the left hand lane unless you are overtaking. What anybody else is doing is not your concern.
I have driven behind you and you have driven me mad!
'Speed marshall'! Not heard that before but brilliant moniker for you and your fellow speedy marshalls!

SomewhereInTheMIdlands · 25/05/2024 21:44

You were probably right and he was definitely a scrotum. .

Whatthebarnacles · 25/05/2024 21:39

You have the same attitude as a middle lane hogger 🙄 The worst driver.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 25/05/2024 21:30

I don't like speeding, myself. The right lane is for overtaking so I'll be in the left lane unless the traffic is going significantly lower than the speed limit.

Having said that, if the left lane traffic on a 70mph road is going at 55mph because of a lorry or something, I'll go into the right lane to overtake that traffic and I'll do it at 70-75. If - as sometimes happens - someone rams up behind me flashing and gesticulating because they want to drive at 80-90 mph, they're just going to have to tolerate going at or slightly over the speed limit until I can go at a reasonable speed in the left lane. I don't see why I should crawl along at 45 on a national speed limit road because a speed king wants to go 20 mph above the speed limit. I've been in cars with way too many impatient drivers who just want to go fast to assume that everyone who wants me to move out of their way is dashing to a deathbed or taking a sick child to hospital.

Yeah and he wouldn't have had to bloody speed up so much to overtake you if you were in the LEFT hand lane! You forced him to speed up to overtake you. I don't advise you drive on the motorways in Germany. They are so strict with the right hand lane is for overtaking rule, you would have been flashed and beeped and received some nasty hand signals and looks with that attitude.

Why did he HAVE to overtake in the first place? I'm not saying the OP was in the right out should be the speed police, but if the driver behind chooses to speed and undertake, then no one is forcing them to do so. They should be following the speed limit like everyone else is required to do.

P3kingDuck · 24/05/2024 20:03

Loads of people sit in that lane because it’s a feeder lane over a road. Why would you need to overtake of the speed limit us being kept to?

Oh FFS just move over to the left!! Right lane is for overtaking, were you overtaking? No! It doesn’t matter if you were doing the speed limit, just move the fuck over!

Rosscameasdoody · 25/05/2024 21:04

LivelyBlake · 25/05/2024 19:41

So all the posters that would never ever have moved to the right hand lane because it is a fast lane, what would you have done to exit the road given than the turn off was on the right?

Wait until the signage directs you get in lane for the turn off. Or if it’s a road you’re familiar with, move over when you know from experience that the turn off is coming up.

Bernardo1 · 25/05/2024 21:00

No.

sillylittlethings · 25/05/2024 20:56

Her oh telling her she was wrong (who was actually in the car!) and 99% of people on here agreeing.

Givemethereins · 25/05/2024 20:45

P3kingDuck · 24/05/2024 20:08

Quite close. Would have had to cross back very quickly and the lane turns into a one lane bridge ie you need your wits about you so really don’t think anybody should be approaching it over the limit.

pollymere · 25/05/2024 20:30

There isn't much you can do about the flashing lights brigade I'm afraid. I've been in the process of overtaking and had the flashing lights brigade drive dangerously behind me whilst flashing lights. It's stupid if it's in a zone with Average Speed Checks but it doesn't stop them. Your best bet is to move safely into the left lane as soon as possible. It's safer to miss your turn off than risk them trying to get past.

fetchacloth · 25/05/2024 20:03

DelurkingAJ · 24/05/2024 19:56

The outside lane should be for overtaking. You were wrong.

Yes that's correct.Except for the Police, no other driver has the right to hog the right hand lane in this way. Besides, the right hand lane should be kept free for emergency vehicles unless overtaking, then you should pull back into the left hand lane if it's safe to do so.

StressedOutButProudMama · 25/05/2024 19:59

Doesn't matter what speed they're doing your not the speed enforcement. That lane is literally designed so you can get out overtake and get back in. Not block the lane.

Conkersinautumn · 25/05/2024 19:56

They also teach getting out of the way of unsafe speeding dicks on speed awareness courses. They're too erratic and unpredictable to try to manage their speed. If they're dumb enough to not notice the speed limit and tailgate, get them out of your 'bubble'

Conkersinautumn · 25/05/2024 19:52

If someone is driving unsafely (flashing lights, coming close to your bumper and erratic speed) then yes, I would move over because I don't want to be in the inevitable crash the incompetent driver fully deserves.

LivelyBlake · 25/05/2024 19:51

KEEP OUT of the outside lane unless you're overtaking (and not half a mile up the road but imminently) or need to be in that lane IMMINENTLY due to lane separation for different destinations.

Thank you. Exactly what the OP did.

Whostolemymojo · 25/05/2024 19:50

P3kingDuck · 24/05/2024 19:59

I wasn’t controlling the limit I was doing what was on the sign.

Not the point. Right lane for overtaking only. You don’t just sit in a lane because you are doing the speed limit. Yes the guy breaking the speed limit was probably a knob, but just sitting in that lane unless your turn is imminent is poor driving…

FieldInWhichFucksAreGrownIsBarren · 25/05/2024 19:49

Buffypaws · 25/05/2024 19:25

no need to be a cunt

Why thank you 🤣

MadMadaMim · 25/05/2024 19:48

Oh.... You're that driver. The one who thinks it's their job to control what everyone is else on the road is doing. It's not.

You at the worst kind of driver, after drink drivers.

KEEP OUT of the outside lane unless you're overtaking (and not half a mile up the road but imminently) or need to be in that lane IMMINENTLY due to lane separation for different destinations.

I'm more shocked that you've admitted you're that person!

WhistPie · 25/05/2024 19:45

Maddy70 · 25/05/2024 19:41

No. You always stay on the left unless overtaking. Then as soon as you can you move back to the left. Thats the law. Might be as well having a read of the highway code. We all forget bits

No you don't, you move to the right (if going right) once you pass the Get In Lane sign.

OldPerson · 25/05/2024 19:45

Rules of the Highway Code.

You stick to the left handside lane - also known as inside or slowest - at all times, unless you're overtaking or there is an obstruction.

You never hog the faster lanes - that's just bad driving.

You should have stayed in the slowest lane until you needed to change lanes to be in the lane that changed directions.

In a 50 miles per hour speed limit, you can drive up to 55mph before you break the law.

You will always meet idiots on the road. Don't provoke them. Don't get into road rage with them. Just know they are the most likely idiots to be in a fatal car crash. And be grateful the crash and rage is not involving you.

But yes. DH is right. Unless there are roadworks and everyone is filmed by cameras at keeping to 50mph, we all should be aiming to stay in the slow lane - unless it drops below 50, then we move into the next lane and overtake.

NewPapaGuinea · 25/05/2024 19:35

Depends on layout and signage. If there are signs saying left goes to x and right lane to y then, yes, you’re justified using that lane.

Tospyornottospy · 25/05/2024 19:32

Marketplacevirgin · 25/05/2024 19:31

As a fairly new driver, I'm amazed that it's acceptable to continually break the speed limit, whatever type of road it is.
This morning I was driving through a village at 30 (the clearly advertised limit).
The car behind drove close to me and then over took as soon as he could, ignoring the limit.
Same yesterday on a motorway. (Not doing 30 obviously!).

Some drivers seem to view the speed limits as optional. It baffles me.

Conversely I see many people driving at 30-35 in a 50mph zone with good conditions and clear visibility. Also not acceptable.
