To think I had every right to be in the right hand lane when driving the speed limit on a dual carriage way

Dh thinks not.

So I’ve had to do a speed awareness course a while ago so do my best to keep to speed limits at all times.

Driving home on a curving dual carriage way on a slight tilt. 50 limit signs every few yards and a speed camera sign. The lane on the right turns into a fly over which I needed to keep on. So I was in the right hand lane driving at 50. A car came right up to my bumper and kept flashing. I stayed in the lane and pointed at the signs. He kept flashing then overtook me in a dramatic fashion, zoomed off( so breaking the speed limit) then slowed down so ended up driving not that faster than me but still over the limit.

Dh said I should have pulled over. I don’t understand why. Nobody on that road should be doing over 50 so what would be the benefit of me pulling over if I’m doing 50?

I understand your point, that you were doing the speed limit, but it sounds like you were in the wrong lane.

YANBU - It's not an overtaking lane.

Everyone seems to be confusing motorways with a dual carriage way, which have different rules.

Motorways - all traffic should be to the left, right hand lanes are for overtaking as there are no junctions on the right.

Dual Carrigeway - both lanes do the same job, you pick the most appropriate lane for your journey.

WTF are you on about? Also, DCs can have one, two or more lanes.

Maybe spend a bit of time reading the Highway Code before you next drive!

If someone wants to go over the speed limit then it’s not your place to control them not to. Regardless of whether you caught up to them in the end and nothing gained. Not your business
it was more dangerous you being unwilling to move in to let them by. Right lane is for overtaking only…

People are not confused!! The highway code literally says about dual carriageways that you should stay left and the right hand lane is for overtaking or using if you are turning right.

if a car had to undertake even if it temporarily slipped over the speed limit, they'd still pull the road Hogger first.

Why would a car HAVE to undertake if the OP was doing the speed limit? They may hard down to do so, and therefore to break the speed law, but that doesn't make it necessary or legal for them to do it.

StressedOutButProudMama · 26/05/2024 07:11

Surrey Police posted about this quite recently on twitter and made it clear that The road Hogger or the right was the car they'd always pull. The said to be sitting doing speed limit in this lane is not what it was intended for and if a car had to undertake even if it temporarily slipped over the speed limit, they'd still pull the road Hogger first. They also shared a video of a driver hogging a lane despite no other drivers been affected they received £100 fine and three penalty points for careless driving. You should always stick left unless overtaking. Doesn't matter what you think of other drivers he shouldn't of gone over speed but in effect your driving was what made him do so.

PrettySenior · 26/05/2024 07:09

I'm sure the responses on this thread are due to the way you worded your post. If you'd said you needed to be in the right hand lane because the road was splitting in less than a mile and you needed to go right I suspect people would overwhelmingly have been on your side. It's because you mentioned that the other car was speeding as if you were somehow policing this that you got the responses you did.

If you were overtaking it is ok to be in the right hand lane. If you weren't overtaking no need for you to be put in the left lane.

Apart from when the road is splitting off and you don’t want to go to the left lane destinations

personally I would have stayed doing the speed limit until just before the speed camera and then pulled to the left
The flash of the speed camera would have made it satisfying

sashh · 26/05/2024 04:00

The benefit is the idiot is in front of you and not going to run in to you if you have to break.

SeeTheWorldAnotherWay · 26/05/2024 00:35

YABVU. It’s this thing called the Highway Code. The right hand lane is an overtaking lane. Once you’ve overtaken, you move back in. It’s rude as well as bad driving.

Vistada · 26/05/2024 00:30

Love threads like this

OP: Was I wrong?

An overwhelming, deafening majority in unison: Yes.

OP: No, no I wasn't, please allow me to explain at length person by person why I wasn't, ignoring you all.

OP, speeder was wrong, but so were you. Right lane is for overtaking, had you been a new driver you'd have failed your test outright for driving as you described, as its in contravention of the highway code.

UprootedSunflower · 26/05/2024 00:28

Ultimately you had a choice to safely pull over. Instead you engaged in distracted pointing at signs and engaging with poor driving with more poor driving.
Thats why you were wrong. Instead of taking a safe manoeuvre you chose h to e less safe option.
It doesn’t matter if the other driver is unsafe or a dick. You are still wrong if you chose the unsafe option yourself. It’s quite possible to both be wrong. I’d have pulled over for the safety of me and other road users, whilst leaving the poor driver to it. Policing people like this just increases the danger

Whothefuckdoesthat · 26/05/2024 00:19

Is that you, uncle Bryn?

‘I am driving at the maximum speed limit of 70 miles an hour. If he doesn't like it, he can move to Germany and drive on the Autobahn’

Topofthemountain · 25/05/2024 23:59

Givemethereins · 25/05/2024 20:45

Yeah and he wouldn't have had to bloody speed up so much to overtake you if you were in the LEFT hand lane! You forced him to speed up to overtake you. I don't advise you drive on the motorways in Germany. They are so strict with the right hand lane is for overtaking rule, you would have been flashed and beeped and received some nasty hand signals and looks with that attitude.

Oh bless his little cotton socks, the nasty OP doing the speed limit in a lane she needed to be in making him speed up to get past her.

This thread is so far over the horizon of bonkers that I'm struggling to see any flashing lights.

AnnieSnap · 25/05/2024 22:36

P3kingDuck · 24/05/2024 20:03

Loads of people sit in that lane because it’s a feeder lane over a road. Why would you need to overtake of the speed limit us being kept to?

Because not everyone is going to choose to stick to the speed limit and it’s not up to you to insist they do so. The outside (right) lane is for overtaking only until you need to be in it to make your manoeuvre. You are repeatedly being told this on the thread. You asked for people’s views. Repeatedly arguing isn’t going to result in people agreeing with you!

Everanewbie · 25/05/2024 22:32

SamW98 · 25/05/2024 22:26

You should drive in the left hand lane unless you’re overtaking - no exceptions. Anything other than that and you’re a danger

Edited

No exceptions? Not even a divergence of the road? She should stay in the left lane despite needing the right lane to exit? If she had reached a sign telling her that lane 2 is required for her route she had every right to be in that lane. Her attitude towards speeding and policing speed isn’t correct though.

SamW98 · 25/05/2024 22:29

P3kingDuck · 24/05/2024 20:20

This wasn’t a lorry or an emergency vehicle it was an arsehole. He clearly had no reason to overtake, he just wanted to be in front. He then stayed in the right hand lane!!! Why did he have more right to be there than me?

Because he was trying to overtake and you wasn’t therefore you’re in the wrong lane and he did have the right to be there rather than you.

Are you being deliberately obtuse?

KEEP OUT of the outside lane unless you're overtaking (and not half a mile up the road but imminently) or need to be in that lane IMMINENTLY due to lane separation for different destinations.

Thank you. Exactly what the OP did.

Except the speeding car had time to undertake then get back in front of her either before they both took the right exit or before she did (can’t make out which from the OP). If there was time for him to do that, she was in the right lane far too early.

celticprincess · 25/05/2024 22:06

I’m kind of with OP in getting mad at all the people undertaking me over the speed limit when I’m in the right lane. And I’m usually there as I am overtaking others as well and often going faster then the left lane but usually keeping to the limit. Then you get the idiots who want to get past you faster than the speed limit and end up undertaking. When I learned to drive on the motorway with an instructor I was told to read the road ahead and told it was perfectly acceptable of there were lots of Lorrie’s for example ahead in the left lane doing 55 that I could keep right until past them all as going in then out then in then out each time can also be dangerous.

I was driving home last night on a single carriageway and the car behind was flashing me to speed up or something as they were right up my bumper. Eventually when the road had stopped bending with other cars coming toward me they sped off past me, way over the speed limit.
