To think I had every right to be in the right hand lane when driving the speed limit on a dual carriage way

Dh thinks not.

So I’ve had to do a speed awareness course a while ago so do my best to keep to speed limits at all times.

Driving home on a curving dual carriage way on a slight tilt. 50 limit signs every few yards and a speed camera sign. The lane on the right turns into a fly over which I needed to keep on. So I was in the right hand lane driving at 50. A car came right up to my bumper and kept flashing. I stayed in the lane and pointed at the signs. He kept flashing then overtook me in a dramatic fashion, zoomed off( so breaking the speed limit) then slowed down so ended up driving not that faster than me but still over the limit.

Dh said I should have pulled over. I don’t understand why. Nobody on that road should be doing over 50 so what would be the benefit of me pulling over if I’m doing 50?

Most people don't use lanes properly, doesn't make what you did correct. YABU.

So I should have weaved in and out in the run up to it going down to one lane over a bridge when both lanes had cars in because an arsehole wanted to be in front speeding with cars in front of him and behind on both lanes?

OP, I totally get what you are saying and I get that by moving over you are enabling the aggressive driver to speed. However, I still think you should have moved over. I would have. The right hand lane is an overtaking lane but it's not clear from your OP how far it was before the road stopped being a duel carriageway.
I've no power to stop other people from speeding but I do have the power to make things as safe as possible for myself and one way to do that is to get out the way of aggressive speeding drivers. Having a speeding aggressive driver right behind you is dangerous.

Another thing to consider is whether you were actually going 50 or whether you were going slightly under. If your speedo says 50 is possible you were going a few miles an hour slower.

There is a long stretch of road near me that's 30mph but feels like it should be faster. I put my cruise control on at 34mph ( which is actually about 32 mph) and it pisses people off.

Hi OP. Folks on here are loving the opportunity to pile in with “unless you are overtaking, stay left” Yes. That is the general rule. But motorways split and it isn’t good driving to stay in lane 1 when you need to be in lane 3 or 4 in half a mile. This really depends how long it was until the point you needed to be in the correct lane for your exit. 5 miles, yes, you’re wrong. 1 mile, maybe 2 miles? You were right.

It’s not your job to police other people’s speed and that is dangerous. But neither should you be forced to take a dangerous last minute manoeuvre or miss your turning because some meat head thinks the motorway is their personal race track.

The only person's driving you're responsible for is your own.

Other driver was wrong for speeding.

You were wrong for being in the outside lane when not overtaking.

So, you take responsibility for your own error and move into the inside lane. You can't control what the other driver does, so just ensure you drive as safely, legally and sensibly as you can.

This. Right hand lane is for overtaking, unless you are attempting a manoeuvre imminently to switch to a new road. Doesn’t sound imminent in this case to me, you should have moved over. I drive on the M4 which can involve all sorts of interesting swaps to lanes, I never move before 500 yards unless it’s a deadlock. Keeps the traffic flowing. Not up to you if people speed and safer just to let them go by.

IncompleteSenten · 24/05/2024 20:32

You just want to be told he was wrong and you were right, don't you?

transformandriseup · 24/05/2024 20:32

I don't agree with anyone breaking the speed limit but I would still use the left lane unless overtaking.

I also think that you staying there to make a point is more likely to cause an accident. What if an emergency vehicle came up from behind and you couldn't get back into the left hand lane? What if you broke down suddenly?

For all you know that could have been an on call fire Marshall who was urgently trying to get by

YABU

Yeah. Exactly. It could have been Paw Patrol.

lemonmeringueno3 · 24/05/2024 20:31

Almost 100% of people in your rl and on mn think you were wrong so probably time to accept it. We have all sat behind a lane hogger feeling frustrated. It doesn't matter what other people do or don't do, you shouldn't have sat there.

It’s confusing because everybody sits in that right hand lane due to where it’s going .

Sirzy · 24/05/2024 20:29

Also unless you are driving a vehicle with. Properly calibrated speedometer then when it shows 50 on your display you actually be travelling at less than 50.

If everyone jumped off a cliff...

Nomdejeur · 24/05/2024 20:28

Your husband told you you were in the wrong, lots on here told you you were in the wrong. Accept you were in the wrong. You were in the overtaking lane, not overtaking, you can be given a fine for that if it were on the motorway. It is not your job to police other peoples driving. Yes, the guy was close and flashing you, but if you hadn’t been in the wrong lane, he’d have just passed and been on his way.

Ah you're a speed Marshall. Yes you should have pulled over.

Nope. Drive to the limit

Lovetotravel123 · 24/05/2024 20:27

I totally agree with you. The speed limit is there for a reason and shouldn’t be broken just because someone wants to overtake.

BlackEyesLikeADollsEyes · 24/05/2024 20:26

You are not the police so it's not your place to try and control/restrict speeders. It's your responsibility to drive legally and according to the Highway Code - which is to drive in the left hand lane unless you need to be in the right to turn or overtake.

Regardless of what the other drivers are doing, you are in the wrong and are making the roads a more dangerous place for everyone by ignoring the code and making up your own rules.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 24/05/2024 20:26

@P3kingDuck - the Highway Code says:

”On a two-lane dual carriageway you should stay in the left-hand lane. Use the right-hand lane for overtaking or turning right. After overtaking, move back to the left-hand lane when it is safe to do so.”

If you did not NEED to be in the right hand lane, you should have moved back into the left hand lane. That was your responsibility. You had no responsibility to try to control the other driver’s, admittedly terrible, driving.

Noshowlomo · 24/05/2024 20:26

Yes get in the right(left!) lane. It’s enraging!

bozzabollix · 24/05/2024 20:25

I’m a driving instructor and have seen at least two learners fail a test for not staying left until they need to be in the right lane to overtake or coming up to a right turn at a roundabout.

Yes people shouldn’t speed, but your lane discipline is equally iffy.

Pollipops1 · 24/05/2024 20:25

You were in the wrong OP and your driving is dangerous if you choose not to move over to the left when you could have done so. You’ll cause an accident if you insist on behaving like that on the road.

Tbf speeding is the cause of most accidents, hence why best to avoid those idiots OP.

spannered · 24/05/2024 20:25

OP you're a very contradictory character. Do you care about the rules of the road or not? Because it seems like you care that everyone else should follow them (no speeding!), but are perfectly happy to flout them yourself (lane hogging and refusing to move over when prompted).

Ginkypig · 24/05/2024 20:24

You are being deliberately obtuse.

we all know that noone should have been overtaking you because you were doing the limit and doing so means they are breaking the law but it is also true you shouldn’t be in that lane unless you’re overtaking or are nearing your exit.

you know this already of course you just like the smugness of getting a reaction out of other drivers and now other posters.

have you thought about the possibility that maybe it’s not worth risking your life just to prove a point? There are some right weirdo’s out there, one day you might be on the end of their aggressiveness and in a speeding car that could easily become the last thing you do.

we all think arseholes who break the law shouldn’t be on the road but the fact is they are.
