Londoners have absolutely decimated my city

NC as really outing.
I'm a musician and over the years I have seen what was a steady stream of londoners turn into a flood this year.
I'm so gutted. I know everybody has the right to live here but it has pushed so many of my friends out, artists and other musicians. It pisses me off that the whole reason these londoners moved here, they are also destroying.
I'm lucky as my landlord is really decent and hasn't put my rent up in years, so I can afford to stay here. But now I'm considering just leaving because of the vibe factor. It makes me really sad. I still gig a few times a week but the crowd is different. I miss my community, but now everybody is scattered as everyone who was pushed out has gone to different places.
I'm considering just jumping ship and moving on myself but I don't know where to go.
Today some more londoners moved into the street...The whole street is full of scaffolding as they seem to really love doing home improvements 😅
I know I sound really bitter. I guess I am. I don't know whether to stay or go, and of I go, where to?

Deal in Kent. They even use the term DFL ‘Down From London’. A friend brought a lovely cottage there that she Airbnb’s half the year in order to pay the mortgage. She has spent a lot of money doing it up.

She loves her cottage but realises that together with all the other DFLs she is making it unaffordable for locals.

Airbnb certainly isn't helping.

I can imagine that too. Probably once upon a time London was much more mixed than it is today.

Hmm how much time have you spent in London ? What is not mixed about areas like Peckham or E&C ? It's not all Clapham and Chelsea you know.

As for Brighton, don't you worry there is still plenty of deprivation try White Hawke or Hollington.

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 18/05/2024 12:44

How do you know they are "londoners" (whatever that means).

Right? And so many 'Londoners' aren't originally from there anyway

CrushedOrange · 18/05/2024 13:09

Corksoles · 18/05/2024 13:08

They're not Londoners, mate. They won't have been born here, I can guarantee it. They'll be from the fucking home counties. Actual Londoners aren't going to Brighton. Hertfordshire, yeah, not Brighton.

Interesting, I never considered that before. What's in Hertfordshire? 😅

am quite energised by the idea of trying to grow a new community, just trying to assess whether those places can be livened up though

Oh wow, I somehow missed THAT comment!!

Just what Sheffield is waiting for, someone from Brighton to come and tell them theya re doing it all wrong Grin

But you want to do exactly the same thing?!

‘These places definitely don't match up, but I'm tempted to do that as am quite energised by the idea of trying to grow a new community, just trying to assess whether those places can be livened up though, or whether I will leave town to try and contribute to creating a vibe somewhere else….’

How are you any different from the people you’re complaining about?

I also think you'd find, places like Manchester, Sheffield and Birmingham wouldn't take too kindly to them trying to "liven them up" they have a vibe of their own and don't like stuck up southern softies trying to tell them their community isn't a vibe,

I say this as a manc, spent 15 years in London, now in Brighton :)

If you re read my post, I wasn't talking about livening those places up.

Have Londoners indeed killed one out of ten of all human beings in your city?

🤣🤭

afsandforever · 18/05/2024 13:06

@olderbutwiser I'm talking about the OP btw

CrushedOrange · 18/05/2024 13:01

Well no. I don't own property and im not high income. Nice try though;)

An influx of renters puts up rental income, it is also a market.

You will take a rental property someone else could live in.

afsandforever · 18/05/2024 13:05

olderbutwiser · 18/05/2024 13:00

So you don't like Londoners coming to
"Your" town and changing the vibe, so you plan to move elsewhere and change the vibe there to suit you?

Nannydoodles · 18/05/2024 13:05

So you can move to where it suits you but “Londoners” can’t?

CrushedOrange · 18/05/2024 13:01

Same impact if you’re renting. That’s one less rental home available for a local.

YABU anyway, Brighton hasn’t been affordable for 10+ years.

Whothefuckdoesthat · 18/05/2024 13:02

It’s quite funny really, because people from towns and cities all over Britain have absolutely decimated the London that I know and love, moving there to make their money, pushing housing prices up so that the locals are forced to leave, gentrifying the character out of everything, calling themselves Londoners, then as soon as they have kids, moving back out because it’s not safe enough to raise their precious darlings there, or have them associating with the few local families that have managed to cling on.

I can imagine that too. Probably once upon a time London was much more mixed than it is today.

Well, that’s Brighton for you.

My immediate thought was Brighton! I’m a Londoner and I love it. Wish I could live there x

Doyouthinktheyknow · 18/05/2024 13:04

It has been the same for years! We sold our Brighton flat more than 20 years ago to someone from London!

We moved along the coast, I don’t really recognise Brighton as it is now. Not sure if it’s me getting old or the changes but I don’t like much about Brighton these days!

socks1107 · 18/05/2024 13:03

You don't want Londoners in your city but your happy to live to someone's town/city because it suits you?
Yabu. People can live where they want

OceanStorm · 18/05/2024 13:02

Why don't you try a retirement village or join a cult community?

Cofaki · 18/05/2024 13:01

YANBU. My town is similar, completely changed from 25 years ago, full of rich Londoners who've pushed house prices up so much we would have to leave if we wanted to move house. One a few streets away recently sold for over 2m for a four bed detached house! (Ours isn't worth anywhere near that, our street isn't as desirable). It's changed the types of ships we have, there's no longer anywhere ordinary people can buy clothes or even affordable gifts. You can't move for restaurants and coffee shops. And it's so cliquey now!
Unfortunately when rich people move somewhere in sufficient numbers they do completely alter the place. I feel like I live in Chelsea now (I used to work there so know it well).

CrushedOrange · 18/05/2024 13:01

qwertyqwertyqwertyqwerty · 18/05/2024 12:57

You will displace someone else/drive up prices elsewhere if you move - so it sounds like you do not have an issue with this happening, just if it happens to you?

Well no. I don't own property and im not high income. Nice try though;)

Withswitch · 18/05/2024 13:01

Is it londoners or have all your 'community' moved on with their lives, got larger houses to accommodate children or smaller ones now kids have moved out? Moved out to the country? Maybe you are the issue and the 'londoners' all hate that mumsnetter who insists on warbling through their nice night out at the pub?
