.. clap your hands 👏 (no I’m joking.)

Nc for this. Those of you that know you’re good looking, when complimented do you agree/acknowledge you know you’re good looking or do you insist you’re not/reverse the compliment?

do you think it’s unreasonable to outright say “I am absolutely beautiful” or hold yourself in high regard?

OP you sound a little smug.

And the question is disingenuous. As if anyone says “yes I am absolutely beautiful.”

You can simply say an unadorned “thank you” and move on.

I’ve got the feeling your post was worded to elicit endorsement of the “ oh don’t be so silly, no- not really … but what makes you say that/please keep insisting cos I’m loving it” charade?

This is a predominantly English site so imo most normal English women would Scoff and say “no I don’t think so” and would then try to reverse the compliment.

I have had several mothers say it about dd2 I do the above and find it slightly awkward. Looks are a genetic lottery which she has randomly won.

I think you’ll find there’s quite a few Scottish, Irish and Welsh people on here as well as others from different countries. What a stupid comment.

Back to the OP. I normally answer “thank you”. It’s normally my hair or my figure that get complimented on these days. I didn’t like compliments when I was younger and tended just to smile.

Yepamilone · 16/08/2024 17:34

i just say thank god for make up!

Calliopespa · 16/08/2024 17:33

I go for option b and just say: “ yes I really am beautiful,” Sometimes I add,”I’m not sure I’ve ever felt outdone in that regard.”

Zanatdy · 16/08/2024 17:25

I’m not but my DD is genetically blessed and she’s quite embarrassed about it. She’s only 16, but is incredibly shy. She’s got beauty and brains too, I’d have killed for that! She has little confidence in herself which is a shame

predominately English ? I have never thought that in all the years I’ve used it. Predominantly British, yes.

People used to say it about my youngest one all the time, and say she should be a model and I would reply ‘no modelling agency in the world has enough sedative to keep her still long enough to take a decent photo of that one’ or something similar. Because it was true, but also a bit deflective of an awkward conversation.

I mean natural beauty, not someone who's had fillers and other cosmetic tweaks. We'd all be stunning then.

No, we really wouldn’t

Lovethat · 16/08/2024 17:07

Someone complimented my hair on the weekend, I'm a fat, 50yr old but I do have good hair 🤣 I thanked them as it's a lovely thing to be told, and it made my day

NPET · 16/08/2024 16:52

I don't think I'm "a stunner" but I'm told I am. If other women compliment me, I say something like "thanks, I'm nothing special". But if a man does it, it's different. I've learnt never to smile in response because men auto think they've "scored" if I do. I either say "OK thanks" and move on or if they're a creep I'm in the habit now of saying "I know I am" and loving the fact that they hate me thinking I look OK!

fairyliquidbubbles · 13/05/2024 21:20

TheaBrandt · 13/05/2024 14:43

I say “oh they are all gorgeous aren’t they”
don’t think it’s particularly healthy to be singled out as better looking than everyone else as a teen.

Agree so much.

fairyliquidbubbles · 13/05/2024 21:18

I don't necessarily think I'm great looking. Some days better than others. But if and when complimented on appearance I'll say something like "Thankyou! That's such a lovely thing to say"

MillshakePickle · 13/05/2024 20:57

Beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder. And, it changes depending on what the media is portraying as beautiful.

I'm not ordinary or plain looking and have unusual features. I'm also short and a typical Latina shape.

I have confidence in who I am as a person. I have often been complimented. I just say thank you or make an appropriate joke to deflect depending on the situation.

Best compliment I've ever had, though, was some random on my commute. He just asked if I didn't mind him saying, but he thought my confidence and they way I held myself were the sexiest thing he ever saw. I blushed fucking hard! He said bye and hopped on his train. I was left speechless. That doesn't happen often!

Ineedaholidayyyy · 13/05/2024 20:53

@Dancehalldarling I can relate, I find compliments of any sort awkward, I never know how to respond. I also feel that just saying thanks could come across as though you really think you are gorgeous. If someone gave me a compliment on my looks, I'd kinda brush it off, aww thanks, so do you, or your hair looks amazing and try and deflect the attention away from me. I appreciate the comments of course, but I just find them awkward. I've embraced a much simpler lifestyle now I WFH so I don't get many comments on my looks anymore, but TBH I prefer it this way.

Scrumbleton · 13/05/2024 20:36

I've always looked well when dressed/ made up and have received a lot of compliments from men and women over the years - generally I'll compliment in return and say thank you. In my scruffs I'd say I'm just okay looking.
I'm 60 but now have aged pretty well. Im tall with good bone structure, have subtle botox and have looked after my skin well. - I was recently at a multi generational party and a lovely 20 something year old woman i didn't know stopped me and told me I was very beautiful. I said thank you how lovely! It's pretty much made my year. Smiling just thinking about it 😀

DodoTired · 13/05/2024 20:22

I used to be pretty good looking when younger/slimmer. Originally I downplayed it all as in “oh don’t be silly”, and start listing faults, but when I myself compliment people I HATE when they do that, so I learned to say “aw thank you that’s a nice thing to say” or something along these lines.
Agree its nice to offer a genuine compliment back

Snerl · 13/05/2024 20:22

I am no longer beautiful but I used to be. I used to always deny the compliment or make some self-deorecating remark until an older man - a friend if my parents - gently told me off for it. He said "You need to learn to graciously accept a compliment because you're going to get plenty of them. Just smile and say thank you." Which I've tried to do ever since (although it's a long time since I've had the opportunity!)

HRTQueen · 13/05/2024 20:22

I would often feel awkward but say thank you

Others often took this as me thinking I didn’t know how good looking/attractive I was. I absolutely did and quite self absorbed/vain a guy I worked with once called this out and said HRTQueen knows exactly how gorgeous she is and others argued with him 😬

im not now but thats fine I have had my time to shine

childlessandfree · 13/05/2024 20:02

If you’re gorgeous and you know it clap your hands..
i will because why the fuck not👏👏👏👏Although i look like crap.

Bewareofthisonetoo · 13/05/2024 17:58

NewMe2024 · 13/05/2024 14:48

just say thank you and offer a compliment back (you look lovely too, love your top, etc.)

This

bringmorewashing · 13/05/2024 17:52

I used to get this when younger and would just laugh and say thanks, and maybe compliment them in return. I wouldn't have agreed "Yes aren't I gorgeous!" Because well... that would be awkward 😂 but also because I didn't think so much of myself, I was quite insecure. Looking back at old photos now though I can see what they meant!

Dienw · 13/05/2024 17:45

NancyJoan · 13/05/2024 17:22

It would be very odd to be told ‘You are very beautiful’ except in a dodgy pick-up situation. I am often complimented on eg my hair, clothes, skin. I always say thank you. I can’t imagine saying ‘I agree’!

I have been told that by women. Some from different cultures.

I’m certain none of them were trying to pick me up.

Tanyahawkes · 13/05/2024 17:33

Dancehalldarling · 13/05/2024 16:27

interesting views! For me, if I thank someone I feel like that is me agreeing. I don’t know if it’s a ND thing but I immediately start pointing out anything that could be wrong with me. It genuinely makes my toes curl when somebody comments on my appearance!

the past two days I have had 2 separate people say to me “wow you’re stunning you’re like a model” this is NOT a stealth brag by the way. I just thought it was weird that 2 separate people said the same word for word sentence and both times I replied “god no I’m not please don’t be stupid I look like shit”. Ironically, I was helping the people on both occasions so I thought my kindness would be commented on rather than my appearance. I’m inwardly cringing at myself for getting so flustered and I know I don’t look like “shit” so to speak but I’m carrying more weight than I’d like to and have a few things I’d like tweaking but gahhhhh it makes me cringe!

I think it all depends how it’s said tbh, “thankyou” with a hair flip or a smile or something might come across like you agree, “awwww that’s sweet, thankyou” and if you think they are pretty maybe return the compliment, if it’s a woman saying it, if it’s a man that would seem flirty

SerenChocolateMuncher · 13/05/2024 17:31

"god no I’m not please don’t be stupid I look like shit”.

So, you would tell someone they are stupid for paying you a compliment? I hope you wouldn't, because that would be incredibly rude. Why would you want to tell them you look like shit if they've said you look nice? What is wrong with just thanking them?

TTPD · 13/05/2024 17:22

I don't think I'm particularly attractive, but when I'm complimented (which generally happens for my clothes rather than me specifically) I'm appreciative and polite I think. I don't agree, nor do I disagree.

I find it odd when people disagree with a compliment - I get why they do it but as the compliment-giver you're then left a bit stuck, conversationally. They've basically said your opinion (that they look nice or whatever) is wrong.
