Is camping alone weird?

Dreamegg · 13/05/2024 09:39

I used to really enjoy camping - I lived near a national park for a while in my 20s and used to hike and camp regularly with friends. I've been living in London for the past few years and neither DP or my friends here are interested in camping.

I've spontaneously booked a one night, solo stay at a small campsite about an hour drive away in June, just as a tester to see how I feel about camping alone, but now I'm a bit anxious! Mainly embarrassed about rocking up on my own and being a loner in a field of families and friends.

Does anyone here go camping alone? I'm not bothered about being alone, I'm going for some peace and quiet! It's more just feeling awkward on the campsite as a loner I guess. Is it that unusual for people to camp alone? And also have some concerns about being a lone woman sleeping in a field at night. Any advice or tips appreciated.

Camping in itself is weird imo, when comfy beds and warm showers exist.

But camping alone is certainly far less weird than doing it with a family, next to other people. That's just masochistic.

An advert for a tent just came up in between all the posts lol

No not at all, DH camps alone but mainly wild camping. He enjoys the solitude

@Yellowhammer09

What are your experinces camping 🏕 abroad as a solo female camper then?

Did you travel only to campsites then or did you stay at budget hostels or go festivals camping too

Just curious thanks

I spent 3 months travelling around the US camping at campsites and every now and again cheap $50 motels, and staying at hostels. I mostly camped in my little tent though.

I never felt threatened. People were understandably curious as to why I was touring alone, but seemed to think it was pretty cool. I got used to going to bed with the sun, so I felt really refreshed. The good thing about camping in the US is that they have fire pits and picnic benches per plot, so it feels a bit cosier than being in the middle of a field. There was one occasion when I was truly camping on my own. I thought it would be a bit strange but after lighting a fire it all felt normal again.

I'd love to solo camp again. But these days I have a DH and lots of little children in tow 😆

It depends on you whether you'd be seen as "weird" or not. Would people have any reason to be suspicious of you? The perception would be different for a woman in her 20s or 30s camping alone than a man in their 40s. Generally it's seen as less "weird" for women to do this sort of thing solo than for a man to so you'll probably be fine.

If I think of a woman camping alone, I picture a woman camping alone. But a man camping alone, best case is they're some kind of survivalist, worst case they're a Black Panther style nutjob.

@Dreamegg

I would recommend doing what one poster said camp 🏕 near other campers so you don't feel so anxious alone camping especially first time,

Yes i have alone well sort of when my daughter was small at new age alternative festivals in the early 90s,
It was good quite interesting experinces ,
busy type of interesting market event , make shift cafes good family entertainment,

I also camped last year at the famous book festival in the uk The Hay festival
Want to do it again,
If funds will allow me too,

Throughly enjoyed enjoyed ..

Yes go for it @Dreamegg

Once you do it the first time,

You will want to do it again,

i can definitely recommend visting festivals as a single woman on your own too..

I also recommend travelling and staying in guest houses and hotels as a single woman,

I've done it in London a few times
Found it liberating

I agree with @SpringleDingle

and @Longdueachange sound good advice too...

I was in the middle of a camping holiday once with the DC, DP and friends. It was a lovely holiday but it was still camping with lots of little kids!

Then a woman turned up on a bike, on her own. She set up her tent and unpacked a tiny camping stove to make tea and a blanket to sit on, and sat there reading a book. I remember being so envious and deciding that I’d do that one day.

RoystonVaseyRoyalty · 13/05/2024 12:33

There's a Korean Youtuber, Ssoberry, her solo camping videos are brilliant. She's made me want to try it!

BiddyPop · 13/05/2024 12:30

I I used to camp with just dd when she was 9-13ish. She grew out of it.

I've done one solo trip and enjoyed it. I have plans to do lots this summer, I just need to figure out a car.

SlothsNeverGetIll · 13/05/2024 12:26

I've never done it, but know women who do.
DH camps alone regularly for work.
I would think nothing of a solo camper and there is often one or two on campsites when we visit.

Longdueachange · 13/05/2024 12:02

I think you'll be fine. It's a male privilege thing, but my bil camps alone several times a year. As women, we have to be a bit more careful about not being a isolated at we would like, but enjoy. Make sure you have a phone signal where you stay and have a couple of full phone battery banks to see you through. Wine, camp fire and a good book with a clear night will be heaven.

WalkingThroughTreacle · 13/05/2024 12:01

You're probably safer as a lone female on a campsite that you are in a hotel. Think about it. In the unlikely event that something bad happens, you could shout for help in your hotel room and chances are nobody would hear, barring the adjoining rooms which may be unoccupied or may not act. On a campsite if you shout for help every tent within 100+ metres will hear you.

SpringleDingle · 13/05/2024 11:57

Lone campers are totally normal. There's always one or two with motorbikes or push bikes, the odd person with an old campervan, etc.. I've been lone camping in my campervan a good few times, it's lovely!

JustAnotherPoster00 · 13/05/2024 11:56

Can I suggest watching a couple of YouTube channels OP, Adventures with Lilu and Wild Beare they are women who go solo wild camping and hiking they are absolutely inspiring

Go for it OP and have an absolutely chilled and wonderful time

Username917778 · 13/05/2024 11:55

I don't camp alone (as I have kids who love it) but I do camp often and lone campers are very common, please don't worry at all about feeling out of place x

OneTC · 13/05/2024 11:52

On a campsite it's completely fine but for wild camping I feel just on edge enough to not enjoy it

KreedKafer · 13/05/2024 11:50

Oh, not weird at all. I'm not a camper myself but based on what I've seen on holidays, lots of people camp solo, especially in really beautiful areas like national parks. We go to the Scottish Highlands and Islands a lot, and we always see lots of people camping, hiking, cycling and generally having a lovely time alone. I would think absolutely nothing of it.

Camping has never really appealed to me, but I actually think I'd be much more likely to enjoy camping on my own than I'd enjoy camping with someone else.

Flev · 13/05/2024 11:42

I've done it - my favourite campsite was one in Dorset who when they took my booking for 1 tent & 1 person emailed me to ask if I was meeting another group I wanted to be near or coming for a "getting away from things" break (and if the latter, would I like a quiet pitch).

Definitely do it, just make sure the tent you take is one you can pitch and strike solo so you don't need to ask for help (I'd recommend a dome tent for this, they're easier than a tunnel tent or a frame tent).

BoudiccaOfSuburbia · 13/05/2024 10:54

I camp on my own loads. I love it. I only go to sites where I can have a campfire to sit by, I walk, swim or go to historical or similar places in the day, sit out reading and reading. Bliss!

I also love trips with groups of friends and family for communal fun, camping solo is about me and my peace and quiet and the simple life.

Come to the MN Camping Board!

Iheartmysmart · 13/05/2024 10:43

I camp on my own quite a lot. My friends are very much 5* hotel types and DS is away at Uni so it’s solo trips for me. Absolutely love it. I don’t usually bother with electric hook up so normally get a quiet pitch. Go out for the day walking then come back and sit outside my tent with a good book and a glass or two of red. Bliss.

Mysticguru · 13/05/2024 10:38

Don't worry. Find a quiet corner. Campsites can be loud if occupied by families. I prefer open countryside personally.

AliceKyteler · 13/05/2024 10:38

I go camping by myself, just me and my bicycle with only myself to rely on. It's not weird at all.
It's just annoying that nearly all campsites now charge per pitch. So just me and my one person tent can pay the same as a few people in a massive tent but that's another rant.
Similar to PP I always take something nice with me to have as a night cap or some nice chocolate. Enjoy yourself!

TrtseHkpr · 13/05/2024 10:25

Not at all. I've done it, and would rather go alone than miss out. Hope you have a fantastic time!

hushabybaby · 13/05/2024 10:14

I take the kids camping a lot and often see people lone camping and don't think anything of it... in fact I'm slightly envious 🤣
