I hate sharing food!

We went out for Sunday lunch yesterday.. absolutely delicious but the vegetables for 4 came in one dish and then everyone was very polite and only took a little bit. I want my own dish so I know what's mine and what I can eat. Also.. same with Tapas...I like my own portion. I don't mind so much if it's a Thai starter or something like that as it is clear that there are two of something and two of something else. I find it stressful sharing!

I'm so on the opposite side of this fence that I'm struggling to understand you all. Food is to be shared and enjoyed and rejoiced. It's delicious and surely the more the merrier. I'm never ever happier than when sharing food- that which I've made for many or that which I order- which I want to share. I taste a thing and love it, my response to which is to immediately want my loved ones to taste that lovely thing and to witness their shared love of a lovely thing?! I'm of the "omg this is amazing you HAVE to try it!" Variety, as opposed to the "omg this is amazing and it's all for me!" Variety.

Like there are people who prefer black jacks over fruit salads, and people who prefer fruit salads over black jacks, and never the Twain shall understand the other! my suspicion is that food sharers and food keepers are destined to never understand the other, despite everyone's best intentions

I don't like sharing food either. When I go for a curry, I generally get a couple of veggie side dishes instead of a big main and a friend always puts his fork in my dish assuming its a "shared" side dish. Not even a serving spoon, his slobbered-on fork that's been in his meaty dish and in his mouth and then in my veggie food. Really irks me. Feel the rage when people double dip their crisps or carrots or whatever in the houmous/salsa/dips 🤬 Keep your germs to yourself!

BitterAndTwistedClub · 06/05/2024 23:29

I hear you. The only person I will share with is husband or son. I feel like a complete greedy so and so when anyone else is involved. I hate to sit back and watch someone else scoff my portion. Maybe I’m too polite!

DownWithThisKindOfThing · 06/05/2024 23:24

I don’t mind if it’s my husband or it’s somewhere with tapas/sharing plates. We went to a ££ place in Edinburgh a few months ago and the food was all for sharing, but it was like one plate of dinner that you then had to cut into halves eg a joint of meat, as opposed to 2 individual portions. It wasn’t horrible but was a bit weird and not something I’d choose myself again.

buffyslayer · 06/05/2024 23:20

There's 2 friends I will go to tapas with
We all eat anything and we all want to actually eat
So it's very much "yes we need 3 breads between us, yes we know it's a lot of plates, we are hungry" Grin

louderthan · 06/05/2024 23:17

Oh and before anyone starts I am well aware that I have a phobia and I'm trying to address it in therapy.

louderthan · 06/05/2024 23:16

I don't like sharing unless it's clear that there are two things in a portion; eg tacos.
I also have all sorts of issues with germs and contamination so I'm only comfortable sharing with people I know well, who know not to shove their hands in the shared food before I've taken my portion with a fork/spoon.

Rutlandwater · 06/05/2024 23:01

i suffers from food envy so I love to share - I’ll go halfers with dh or the kids - sometimes we even go quarters - I want to taste everything on the menu, I don’t want to eat a lot though - the first bite is always the best.

DrCoconut · 06/05/2024 22:56

I don't want anyone touching my food with their gluten infested mitts/utensils.

Put it on my plate and stop making me think. If I wanted to think I'd have cooked. Shared veg FFS.

If I cook and you serve your portion the rest is mine if I want it. Don't tell me you might have some more. If you want more take it now. I'm not letting it go to waste or go cold. Take it or leave it.

And no. That's my crispy shredded beef. We can share the prawn crackers but you can fuck off eating my choice of Chinese. You want it you order it.

Now I'm laughing.. you won't come to me for buffet style then? How do I know how much everyone wants to eat?Grin Some might want more than others...

Although I hate sharing, when we have friends for dinner I do a buffet which when you think about is the same as sharing I guess.

Glipsy · 06/05/2024 19:51

I always do sharing given the choice and always serve meals that way at home. Funnily enough I think it’s also an ED thing, I like not having to look at my own singular plate of food to be eaten and people seeing what I’m going to eat, I can just go a bit here and a bit there and before you know it, whammo, a meal! Plus I get to try loads of different stuff.

Sorry to the rest of you, I’m totally the mate picking the tapas place

RabbitsRock · 06/05/2024 19:14

Absolutely get this OP! I’m a bit of a lightweight, often ordering a child’s portion (especially if it’s a roast), and I like to just have my own food. Friends & I went out for pizza & fries at a pop up place once. The food was delicious but again, I ate only a small amount but paid quite a lot for what I had as we got pizzas & fries to share.

My heart sinks when a friend books a restaurant for us and when we get there I find it’s a “small plates” situation and we’re expected to share. She’s 8st soaking wet with the appetite of a bird and I eat like a horse. I end up getting double what she does and looking like a fat pig.

We did a 3 small plate brunch and someone declared “let’s all get something different so we can share”

No. I just want have MY 3 plates to myself and not feel guilty about having more than my share of a plate I wanted to order.

CurlewKate · 06/05/2024 19:11

I LOVE sharing! I am not meant for mumsnet!🤣

Wherearewe2001 · 06/05/2024 19:10

Pete, have you thought about my Bhunas?

TheBirdintheCave · 06/05/2024 19:05

I'm autistic and not knowing how much of the food is mine is a thing that causes a lot of anxiety. I'm ok sharing with my husband as I trust him to deal out even portions but meals that involve lots of people and sharing are just not for me.

mynameiscalypso · 06/05/2024 19:05

For someone with a history of eating disorders, it's an absolute nightmare. I can't stand it. The only person I will share food with is my 4 year old.

ohthejoys21 · 06/05/2024 19:05

Me too. Went to Ottolenghi on Saturday night with friends and even if you order your own dish, they put it in the middle of the table with extra forks to share.

Think back just 10 years and would be unheard of.. everyone ordered for themselves.
If someone on my table has a cold do I really want to be spending my evening watching to check they don't stick their own fork in?

HATE IT!!!

Goldenbear · 06/05/2024 19:03

I’m the opposite, I like it because I eat less.

pinkyredrose · 06/05/2024 19:01

I'm so with you, I can't stand people's hands in my food!
