To be annoyed a friend lied about their address on a school application to get into an oversubscribed school

I've recently found out a friend has lied on their school application by using another family members address to get their child into an oversubscribed school. The school is one I would have considered but would have been unlikely to get in as its very popular. Friend lives quite far but plans to move within the next few years closer to the school so wants their child at the school now. Its just annoyed me as I know many people who didn't get a place who are more local and feels Iike friend is misusing the system. Friend was able to get a letter with their name on it at the address by signing up for a credit card/store card I believe. I know its none of my business but I just feel annoyed about it now

What if you knew it meant another child had been left with no school place...

Its not a victimless crime.

Like I said

Me neither. It's self limiting anyway, the children need to be able to get to and from school and won't want to live miles from friends.

One word answer ...would you report your friend ?

alongwaytobed · 06/05/2024 11:42

@Liverpoollass2 this woman is a rubbish example of a friend and of a parent! She doesn't give a shit about trying to cheat others out of a place or about her kid losing their place due to her fraud.

It's on her not you.

Absolutely report, phone the school anonymously

Would you report your friend for this and if so I would hope you would tell her I'm reporting you ...Nice friend

Report

I'm not sure what you mean by take them at their word. Presumably the families fleeing violence or abuse live somewhere and can prove where that place is if necessary

The family the OP is talking about don't live where they say they do so not the same

I mean how do you prove that you are living with family and not pretending to live with family? I had very little proof when I was, no more than someone else could get if they wanted to.

bellsbuss · 06/05/2024 11:26

I don't think they do check council tax records for every application. My name has never been on the council tax and I've done 4 school applications without being asked for additional proof

MumblesParty · 06/05/2024 11:23

I find it hilarious that on MN it’s a mortal sin to report someone for benefit fraud, or even child abuse (so what if Mum whacks her kid, you don’t know what’s going on in her life etc etc). But when it comes to lying to get a place at a good school - well, that’s different. The “mind your own business” crew change their tune, and the advice is to report!

ClareBlue · 06/05/2024 11:17

Great example to their children. We cheated to get you into best school. You can now cheat all your life if it gives you an advantage. Next thread down. Why are all our leaders morally bankrupt?

We all know looked after kids are priority.

Bucket07 · 05/05/2024 20:53

How did they get the place? You have to show a council tax bill with your name and address on it for all schools, afaik.

I know someone whose parents bought a flat so their son could use that address with bills, etc, to apply, but they never lived there. Once children were established in the school, they rented the place then sold it for profit.

Must say I was furious.

MoreCraicPlease · 06/05/2024 11:06

Are you in Ireland or elsewhere?
In England the LA administer admissions and a check against council tax residence is standard. You would complain to them rather than to the school.
In Ireland it is through the school so it’s harder to prove or disprove residence so you’d need to raise a complaint to them. It also seems more common there and I wonder if a blind eye is turned.

Bumpitybumper · 06/05/2024 07:24

You need to report her for the sake of your son! You are his advocate and it is in his best interest to go to that school. Your 'friend' may well think the same about her daughter but she is committing fraud to effectively steal a place from another child (potentially your son). She doesn't care about your child or anybody else's so why are you so adamant you can't report her?

Cos it's only me her mum and her husband who know.
Reporting her doesn't benefit me and karma a bitch and will bite her on the bum at some point.

I advocate for my children every single fucking day! Whilst also letting my eldest have some independence to choose things to some extent. He's not that bothered with the allocated school and at the min my youngest has no school he needs a sen provision and has been let down massively by the la and his caseworker I'm currently going down the route of tribunal and will not back down this has cost me almost a full head of hair with stress, gave up my job to cope with the daily administration and that I'll be home schooling until I win at tribunal and has cost me thousands of pounds already believe me when I advocate for my kids!!!!!! Find something else to do with your time

If I don't win the appeal I may report her see how I feel but it doesn't help us does nothing for us but will cost us so much when they find out it was me if my kid is happy with the appeal outcome and allocated school that's all that matters to me.

Plus she's got her story straight hiw her and her husband split up for a while and she did change her own not joint bank account and credit card and phone bill and other small things to her mums for a month or so but has now changed them back like she's gone back to him. Would that matter as she was in her mums address and now it looks like she's gone back now she's got the place the school don't care as that's where she lived on allocation day and application process apart from on council tax It's the la's job not mine anyway I wouldn't even know how to do it

@Liverpoollass2 report.
If this parent has done something fraudulently then it's their problem if their child loses the place, nothing for you to feel guilty about. The parent clearly doesn't give much of a shit about their child's wellbeing to behave like this, knowing the kid could have their place removed even after starting there. Sadly some parents are just twats

Don’t call ppl twats ppl have there reasons so be more empathetic….read some of the posts and stop using insulting words can you not have a proper discussion without resorting to this !!

Yes someone said siblings is always number 1.

Except in England they're never no. 1.

Listen I absolutely do not let my children down at all.

I fight for my children every single day. He's OK with the school he's been allocated he'd rather the other but is OK and says it's worth a try and he'd like me to appeal but he won't be heartbroken if he doesn't get it. A child that's been bullied right through primary school who's just excited to make friends and have a clean slate which will happen either way and if he's not happy then we take him out of school.

I'm doing what MY child wants me to do. There's 5 schools bearer than the one he's been allocated that he absolutely hands diwn refused to even entertain so if I was letting him diwn I'd let him go to any old school and not give a shit about his feelings or needs.

We're 19 on the waiting list for the school we are appealing. Getting her thrown out of the school doesnt help me because there's 18 people infront who aren't my problem to be quite honest. If he was 1st on the waiting list and desperate to go there I might consider it

Don’t let anyone make you feel this way you do what you think is right in your situation good luck and I hope this is a new HAPPY start for him how it should be

Why are you putting your child through all that when you could let the LA know there a possible admission fraud?

Wishy washy meant to be nonsense is letting your child down and making your life miserable, just why?

Op said they used a family member’s address so I guess they would arrange with the family member about staging a home visit there.

They would see straight through it. It happens a lot.
