To be annoyed a friend lied about their address on a school application to get into an oversubscribed school

I've recently found out a friend has lied on their school application by using another family members address to get their child into an oversubscribed school. The school is one I would have considered but would have been unlikely to get in as its very popular. Friend lives quite far but plans to move within the next few years closer to the school so wants their child at the school now. Its just annoyed me as I know many people who didn't get a place who are more local and feels Iike friend is misusing the system. Friend was able to get a letter with their name on it at the address by signing up for a credit card/store card I believe. I know its none of my business but I just feel annoyed about it now

@WittiestUsernameEver

We all know looked after kids are priority.

You'd think not, seeing as everyone and their dog is coming on and saying siblings are 1st in lists...

I 100% would and before you tell me I am not a friend. The "friend" who was ok with claiming someone else's place is the one who is not a friend so I would be happy to let that "friendship" dwindle. It won't be the last time they feel their family is more entitled than others.

I would also be ok with telling them to their face I feel what they did is wrong.

Also let's not confuse a social continence with a lack of empathy. It is far from. It's understanding empathy is not just about those closest to us.

Lovely

Worked in school admissions for a council. We caught someone out for providing a family members place - they said others were doing it to get a place so we had to ask every single family who had been offered a place to provide documents - utility bill/ drs letter for example to check no others purely because they made that comment. You can call the council who allocate coordinated places (Reception and Year 7) that someone has a place under false means. If applied for secondary school the child's record will have the house address registered with primary school so the team should contact the primary to double check when they “moved” to new address then ask the parent for more substantial proof which would be utility or rental agreement prior to 31st October. They would also notify secondary school who would then need more definitive proof from the parent.
Don’t feel bad for dobbing them in. They are taking a school place fraudulently and it is not fair on others.

Children of staff never get priority!

They can if it’s in your admissions policy!

What about people living with family? We were.

You would be on the electoral role

alongwaytobed · 06/05/2024 12:56

@Whatifthehokeycokey I couldn't do it to my child either. Not a great parenting trait to lie and cheat.

It was a reference to people covering for friends who commit crimes/break the law. So completely relevant to your comment (that you wouldn't report a FRIEND). You seem unnecessarily aggressive.

Totally not relevant to post your talking about Burring bodies grow up

Errr why are you insinuating that ffs stick to the thread and what it's asking ...start a new thread if that's what you want to know 🙄

Why on Mumsnet is everyone saying report for this but when it comes to benefits fraud it's always 'mind your own business'?

I think those are two different scenarios. Benefit fraud only indirectly impacts other people, i.e. the tax payer, and it impacts them collectively.

Lying to get your child a school place directly impacts another child from the local community who loses the place they had more right to.

Whatifthehokeycokey · 06/05/2024 12:29

StormingNorman · 05/05/2024 21:03

I couldn’t do that to a child. They’ll be getting excited about their new school already.

That's the risk their parents have chosen to take.

Lovinglife57 · 06/05/2024 12:17

Kalevala · 06/05/2024 11:51

Me neither. It's self limiting anyway, the children need to be able to get to and from school and won't want to live miles from friends.

💯

I reported another parent who was very vocal about using grandparents address for school application...school oversubscribed.
I reported during the application process before schools were allocated.
Child did not get a place and parent is very vocal about appealing.
Not my problem...we all live local to school and in catchment...other parent is 30 minutes away, not in catchment in another LA 🙄

@Lovinglife57 so if your own child was being sent miles away, to an inadequate school... but you knew someone had lied you still wouldn't report? Really?

Like I said I wouldn't report a FRIEND that is what op is questioning FRIEND

I mean how do you prove that you are living with family and not pretending to live with family? I had very little proof when I was, no more than someone else could get if they wanted to.

Council tax.
utility bill.
bank statement.

There multiple ways of proving but also endless possible repercussions. It’s completely foolish.

Absolutely I would. I wouldn’t even think twice. And honestly, I would be questioning the friendship. Fortunately I don’t know anyone who would do this.

Lovinglife57 · 06/05/2024 11:59

PuttingDownRoots · 06/05/2024 11:51

What if you knew it meant another child had been left with no school place...

Its not a victimless crime.

I would not report my friend for this ...this is where my loyalties lie ...its none of my business ..I hope this clarifies I would not report a friend

The pp who mentioned lottery as the most fair system is correct especially for secondary school when most pupils travel further: sibling policy would apply.

Distance from gates is the least ‘fair’ policy as it’s based on ability to pay. When VAT comes in for school fees, expect this to rise. May as well invest in property where you can recover the costs and get a good education on the taxpayer rather than forking out hundreds of thousands over the years of income that’s already been taxed. It’s great to see an incoming government that is so committed to fairness…

This really is nonsense.

suppose you get a place in a school far away and not your closest and you literally can’t get there? Then what?
