To ask what the tories have ever done for us…

To compliment the thread about labour and give a bit of balance, let’s discuss the legacy of 14 years Conservative government. Never voted for them myself and although we now have 2 out of 3 Tory MPs up here because of the Brexit effect I haven’t seen any great improvement in our town. In fact if anything it’s pretty much gone to the dogs. So good and bad, what have they achieved ?

You can't lump all of Europe together based on experience of one country.

I've lived in two other EU countries and childcare was excellent - and free.

That's exactly what the poster I was replying to was doing- saying childcare in Europe is always better. I was responding saying it isn't always, so the opposite of lumping them together in fact.

It's not as cheap as in some areas in Europe (but the care and info you get from the nursery is much better in the UK, I've lived in Europe and so have first hand experience of this) but my nursery invoice is still tiny in comparison to what it used to be. Several hundred pounds a month, which makes a big difference. Not saying that Labour wouldn't do something similar but the Tories did make this happen, which is what the post is asking.

We will rarely agree on much Clav, but on this we do...... i knew full well we'd leave the SM and possibly the CU, it was made perfectly clear by Cameron.

However, back to the OP.... simple question: what public service has improved since 2010?

For me the answer is none, almost all has got worse, thats their legacy.

I hear it all the time with my Tory voting friends, they want better roads, healthcare, schools, fed up with rip off britain... they blame the Tories, maybe not impressed too much with Starmer but they want change & the Tories aren't offering any.

Going back to "square 1" is actually rather inviting!!!!

Childcare here is still way more than in Europe. They have done very little in this area, really.

making it clear that the UK would leave the Single Market, for instance, would have focused a few minds

They did make it clear!

June 12 2016
David Cameron confirmed that he will pull Britain out of the single market if there is a vote to leave the European Union at the upcoming referendum.

He said the Brexit campaign had made it clear to voters that voting to leave also meant pulling out of the single market. The prime minister said he would accept the result as an “instruction” despite warning that leaving would be like planting a “bomb” under the British economy.

The prime minister said: “What the British public will be voting for is to leave the EU and leave the single market.”

or am i hearing you say you prefer important topics like brexit should be voted for by academics and those that understood the details better ?

I don't know how @blossomtoes feels about it, but I certainly think that something as important and now catastrophic as Brexit shouldn't have been done by an advisory referendum with a simple majority as an outcome. For something as seismic as that, a threshold of 2/3 of those voting would have made more sense, as would providing information in advance of the vote what each option would look like - making it clear that the UK would leave the Single Market, for instance, would have focused a few minds.

Thank you for that. Your patience is greater than mine.

A 2/3 majority is required to allow women into the Garrick Club but 50% was ok for something as significant as Brexit.

Amazing that isn't it? Also, who really cares whether there are men only, or women only establishments?

Zonder · 07/05/2024 19:00

ArchaeoSpy · 07/05/2024 18:10

but then why not expect the public to have voted better or at least studied what they were voted for so overall the result was or would be better for the country as a whole ?

or am i hearing you say you prefer important topics like brexit should be voted for by academics and those that understood the details better ?

I think some people did the best research they could using the usual resources they have eg tabloids, TV interviews with leaders. The fact that they were significantly lied to means they didn't make an informed vote.

And interestingly 50% wouldn't have been enough to keep us in the EU according to Garage.

I’m saying nobody should have voted at all. I really don’t know how I can make it any plainer for you so could you please stop interrogating me?

Labour would not have put Brexit on the table at all.

6 years of the effects of austerity on the poor (while the rich got richer) helped tip the result over the line as well.

agreed

but labour would have done exactly the same

They have sat back and done nothing while the trans lobby pushed its extremist and damaging agenda.

ToWhitToWhoo · 06/05/2024 20:09

BIossomtoes · 06/05/2024 15:49

I very much doubt it. Labour wouldn’t have had the ERG agitating for it for a start.

Quite.

Kept Corbyn out. Marriage equality, furlough, vaccine roll out, stamp duty reform (not enough on it's own), modern slavery legislation, the move to cut National Insurance, it means that in time rich pensioners lose a tax break. Triple lock had really raised pensioner income, but it's had its day.

They haven't done enough with 14 years though. Should have had massive planning reform, and should have done much more on infrastructure - should probably have included stuff to limit nimby power in planning legislation - shouldn't have cut back HS2, shouldn't have cancelled crossrail 2 or bakerloo line extension. Should have scrapped OBR which is always off and limiting spending.

They might have "kept Corbyn out" but it was the devastating effects of austerity that led the appeal of his policies.

And the press did a better job than the Tories of keeping him out. Under May the Tories lost their majority which nearly let Corbyn in.

2019 became a Brexit referendum re-run.

ACynicalDad · 06/05/2024 17:21

Also add improvement in International education tables due to curriculum reform/phonics/times table tests. It’s put too much on teachers and workload needs work but the kids are doing way better, particularly at primary level.

Cattenberg · 06/05/2024 17:10

Finally stopped letting agents from charging ridiculous fees to tenants. I was really surprised when the Tories did this, but I’m glad that they did.

Mybewgremli · 06/05/2024 16:31

UC and poor wages seem to have made it more profitable for some people to claim benefits and work part time or not at all.

That's about it unless you're super rich I think.

Did you not know that MN is crawling with members of Keir's PR team! 😂

Well, they're badly needed to counter the misinformation spread by the hardcore Tory fangirls on this thread. I mean, you yourself have twice repeated the smear about Keir's Beer being equivalent to Boris' lockdown breaking parties, and that wasn't true, now was it?

youngones1 · 06/05/2024 16:24

i went to respond and then, honestly? thought i cannot be arsed. I just can’t be. Same with covid threads.

Not sure why i even clicked on the thread t h so i’ll bow out
