To ask what the tories have ever done for us…

To compliment the thread about labour and give a bit of balance, let’s discuss the legacy of 14 years Conservative government. Never voted for them myself and although we now have 2 out of 3 Tory MPs up here because of the Brexit effect I haven’t seen any great improvement in our town. In fact if anything it’s pretty much gone to the dogs. So good and bad, what have they achieved ?

You seem to think a left-leaning government benefits those on middle to low incomes. It doesn't. In fact, left-wing governments often make life miserable for ordinary working people. The billionaires are untouchable. Whack up taxes and they'll just move to their villa in Italy, or bugger off on their superyacht. It's also near impossible to get anything out of the rich. They're experts at moving their money around and avoiding tax. The burden will fall on middle-earners, and those on low incomes who don't fiddle the system or claim benefits.

My grandparents emerged from WW2 as angry working-class Labour voters. If they were alive now, however, the modern Labour party would hate their guts. They were patriotic, opposed to mass immigration, suspicious of multiculturalism, and contemptuous of those who lived on benefits. Today, the average Labour activist would regard my grandparents as loathsome 'NIMBYs' or 'little Englanders'. The modern Labour party is a different beast to the party that won a landslide in 1945. Many of its supporters don't realise how much the party hates them or how much worse their life is going to be after ten years of Starmer.

The last Labour government certainly made life easier for ordinary people in terms of education, environment policing, health provision. They raised hundreds of thousands of children and the elderly out of poverty.

I am interested to know what ways you think our lives will be worse after 10 years of Labour government, especially considering the situation we are in now re: the environment, economy, education, health, roads etc after 14 years of Tory rule. Worse that this? How?

Shitty brexit where I can’t even send my mum a birthday present to EU without her waiting 6weeks plus and paying all taxes on a £20 gift!

Where are you posting to that it takes 6 weeks to arrive? I sell things and post them to the EU regularly using standard airmail and it usually takes a week to arrive tops. If there is ever a delay (I'm looking at you Greece) it is always the fault of the local EU country postal system which you can't really blame our government for.

I've never voted Tory but our childcare cost is a lot cheaper for our 2 year old now

Childcare here is still way more than in Europe. They have done very little in this area, really.

Had it not been for the furlough scheme, millions of people would have been unemployed, it was a brilliant idea by the Tories.

Youngones1 Are you Rishi Sunak 😂

I believe other countries also did a furlough scheme. Don't think it was the Tories idea but nice try!

Maybe you could mention stopping the boats next? I think thats normally what the Tories trot out as the answer to any question

pointythings · 04/05/2024 18:17

They were patriotic, opposed to mass immigration, suspicious of multiculturalism, and contemptuous of those who lived on benefits.

Contempt for those who live on benefits is a deeply unpleasant character trait. As the parent of two disabled young adults who both work, I don't feel contempt for anyone who is less fortunate than I am.

Cost us a fortune in PM pensions . How many PM's now ?

I thought it was a tacit admission that benefits given to the unemployed are such a pittance that this could not be contemplated or otherwise people would have gone to work anyway.

Decimated public services and so much more whilst they continue to have their snouts firmly in the trough.

Er, no, he didn't. And I'm pretty sure he never watched porn in the Chamber or went AWOL to appear on a reality TV show.

Or groped his mistress against his office door during working hours and lockdown restrictions.

youngones1 · 04/05/2024 17:54

Gordon Brown introduced the lifetime pension allowance in 2006. Thankfully the Tories have abolished this ludicrous policy

That thread is full of posters who are terrified of losing a tax break on their child's private school fees if Labour get in. For the vast majority of people that is not their biggest concern.

I guess they've prevented public services in England from turning as shit as they are in Wales, under Labour.

Which part of Wales are you in @Moonmelodies ?

The Tories weren't unique. Many other countries had similar schemes, with lots more generous than the UK's.

All those furlough payments during COVID.
If it hadn’t been for that, many people would have lost jobs and businesses would have gone under.
People have short memories though.

Came to say this, my business wouldn't be where it is without the continued financial support throughout covid, but this is the only good thing I can think of and who can say what any other government would've done at the time...

But so many self-employed people got nothing.

but then you cannot have an all or no one situation etc ?

Tootiredforallthiscrap · 04/05/2024 17:33

And one that every other nation thought up themselves…I mean what did you expect a government to do. Allow people to become destitute when they can’t work and earn ?

MsCheeryble · 04/05/2024 17:08

BloodyHellKenAgain · 04/05/2024 16:06

I'm self employed and they paid out decent support money during covid which was gratefully received.
Also, the Torys rightfully imo, opened up the economy despite Labour wanting to keep everyone on lock down for longer.

But so many self-employed people got nothing.

bombastix · 04/05/2024 17:01

The Boris effect is weird. I was in hospital the other week which was not a great experience but on the ward there were two diabetic ladies in very poor health in their 60s and were cursing the NHS and said they would be going private.

I mean, both of them were completely uninsurable. But they really did think it was a good idea and liked Boris a lot! The fact that their best hope of medical treatment that didn't make them even poorer was socialised medicine which they had had all their lives went "whoosh" over their heads.

If the NHS does get scuttled in the future, it will on thinking like that by Tory voters.

BiggerBoat1 · 04/05/2024 16:50

They've surely set some kind of record for the number of unelected Prime Ministers.

Starmer, life time pension allowance for everyone but me, what a sleaze ball.

That was implemented by the Tories, it was a Tory policy change.

I can see you dislike Starmer personally, but this was not his decision.

qwertyqwertyqwertyqwerty · 04/05/2024 16:45

youngones1 · 04/05/2024 14:05

Starmer also partied during Covid.

This is a lie.

This lie has been trotted out time and time again - it was investigated twice by Police and no case to answer.
