If someone liked watching Eastenders most nights, would this put you off dating them?

OP posts:
Roomination · 27/04/2024 06:12

If he was fine with watching it on catch up on or with recording it, I’d not have a problem. If he had to watch each episode as it went out and couldn’t miss it, that inflexibility would be a concern.

PeloMom · 27/04/2024 05:45

It’d put me off if have to plan around soaps or they’re not making themselves available because of them.

Definitely a red flag

🤣🤣🤣

WaitUpForMe · 27/04/2024 01:12

I don’t watch it but this wouldn’t bother me. Me and my partner often watch very different things to each other.

Saying that, you can choose to not date someone for any reason at all, so if a fan of Eastenders isn’t for you, that’s ok. 😅

bozzabollix · 27/04/2024 01:05

Try bloody Lovejoy. My husband could do Mastermind on it, should divorce him really.

Moonshine5 · 27/04/2024 01:03

Ick

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 27/04/2024 01:02

The only people I know who watch soaps are 60s/70s so I would find it a little odd for someone my age. The only way it would stop me dating him would be if he couldn’t miss an episode or cancelled plans for it - that would definitely put me off.

RogueFemale · 27/04/2024 00:58

I used to watch Coronation Street for years, but stopped about 15 years ago, can't even remember why. Anyway, friends would sometimes mock me for watching CS, but I just enjoyed it at the time. I don't think it's a big deal to be a bit addicted to a soap - fairly harmless. And maybe a good thing for a man to be interested in relationships especially as soaps are mostly about women.

AstralSpace · 27/04/2024 00:52

Isn't on about 4 times a week? That's what would annoy me.

penjil · 27/04/2024 00:32

MillshakePickle · 26/04/2024 22:26

Yes, it would completely put me off. I can't stand watching TV beyond the odd box set very occasionally. A soap daily is far too much of a commitment. Even if it was catching up on the weekend.

Bloody hell, I've never thought of watching a television show as a "commitment".

Serials are OK, you can stop watching at anytime. EastEnders has been on for nearly 40 years and you're not required to watch it for another 40!!

You could cut yourself some slack and just see 1 episode if you wanted to....sort of like a soap one-night stand! No commitment!!

😂😂😂

penjil · 27/04/2024 00:27

I think as it's Eastenders it's OK.

A bit of East End gangster stuff, misery, murders, family strife.

If he watched any other soaps like 2nd rate Coronation Street, Emmerdale or God forbid, Hollyoaks, then I'd stay well clear!

TheFunHasGone · 26/04/2024 23:26

I haven't watched ot for years but wouldn't have a problem

Actually I think ds1 likes to watch it

brunettemic · 26/04/2024 23:24

Well…what do you like to watch?

Northernparent68 · 26/04/2024 23:22

The real question is should he go out with someone so intolerant

WimpoleHat · 26/04/2024 23:21

Does he talk about it all the time (like the characters are
real people)? Is that his only/main interest and hobby? Is that time sacrosanct and you can’t ever go out at x time on a Tuesday? If so, that would put me off. But if it’s just something he likes to watch in the gym/in the train/in his downtime moments, I can’t see why it’s a problem any more than, say, liking football. Wouldn’t bother me.

SpeedyDrama · 26/04/2024 23:20

MistyGreenAndBlue · 26/04/2024 23:11

Bloody hell is that still going? 😂 I haven't watched it since 1993.

No, they heard you stopped watching and have only shown reruns from ‘85-93 on repeat since then. Somehow, (spoiler alert) Dirty Den presenting those divorce papers on Christmas Day is still a shocking twist even on its 467th rerelease….

As for the op, honestly I don’t see what the bother is. As long as he’s not one of these people who needs to watch their show at the cost of all other activities, what does it matter? My ex didn’t think he was into many shows I enjoyed, but after given some things a go he really got fully into a couple. Friends is the biggest example, he absolutely trashed it until I had a binge one day…

No because I watch it too. I have done since I was a child. I know it’s not considered high quality television but I enjoy it and feel a weird sense of loyalty to it from watching it for so long. My mum has watched it since the first episode and it was always on at home so I got invested when I was about 7. My DH claims to not like it and says he only watches it for me. But I’ve caught him catching up on episodes he’s missed when I’m not even there. Fortunately neither of us are looking to date anyone new so we don’t really care if it puts people off us.

I once instructed a barrister based on the fact their profile said they liked red wine and Brookside (back in the day).

Often people with high powered jobs watch something on TV which helps them completely switch off and that they don't need brainpower to watch.

Is it something particular about EastEnders you find so offensive or can we insert any soap/reality tv/TV programmes yo consider beneath you?

I'd seriously question his taste!

Brookside is a whole other matter, though 😂

Nah there's a Spoiler Thread for Eastenders on Telly Addicts ( he can thank me later )

Actuallly my DH thinks he bloody writes it , he predicts so much of what will happen Blush

He can literally watch it anytime!!

@thisleiekg sounds like you are not that into him and you're looking for an excuse!

Saralouhe · 26/04/2024 22:55

I wouldn't put me off him because he watches them but it would put me off because if we spent more time together he would probably want to watch them with me around and I fucking hate soaps.
