Crying and walking out of hairdresser

Calmondeck · 26/04/2024 16:57

I don’t usually place much importance on haircuts but today’s was a big one. My first haircut post brain surgery. I was partially shaved for the operation so have rocked a very misshapen head for the past 8 months. Now I have multiple bolts holding my skull together, and I guess the psychological significance of getting to cut off all of this old hair that remains and starting afresh 8 months on felt big. I researched top hairdressers in my city and booked aiming to make it a special afternoon. I explained to them in advance the scaring and bolts issue. I arranged childcare.

After 4 hours, an hour of which was spent waiting for the hairdresser, and an hour waiting with wet hair while they forgot about me at the sinks… i just got quietly teary, realised I had to leave in order to cross the city and make it home to breastfeed my baby before bed…

now walking through the city with wet hair so disappointed. First world problems I know.

was I ABU for leaving?

howbizzare22,
Hairdressing is not overpriced, folk have got very used to having it cheap for so long,
Can i ask why you think it is overpriced? Do you think that we ( mainly women) should not earn very much ?
Overheads and product cost is high, and i want to pay my staff properly .

We don't owe anybody cheap hair, Hairdressers have been undervalued for decades, and have been undercharging for too long, thankfully things are changing so we can finally be paid properly for the work we do.
I got asked if we did NHS discount recently by a client who was a surgeon…
I mean,no! Im not going to earn less standing on my feet for 10 hours a day so a surgeon on many times my income can have a cheaper price

I am booked out 3 months ahead with lovely clients who value me . and are happy to pay and never say anything when the prices go up.

It is a luxury service , and people are free to prioritise spending where they like
That does not make us overpriced, It means you would rather spend your money elsewhere which is absolutely fine !

Dollenganger333 · 27/04/2024 08:08

You definitely need to make a formal complaint.

Lurkingandlearning · 27/04/2024 08:04

Having explained the importance of that haircut to them, those people were absolute trash to have treated you that way.

How could they forget, you were sitting there in plain sight?

Not many posts make me really angry but this is one of the worst.

Howbizarre22 · 27/04/2024 07:49

It’s not first world problems OP you’ve been through a harrowing ordeal with your health. This is not good enough- make a formal complaint. Awful service. Hairdressing is so fucking expensive and overpriced as it is at least you can expect timely service & not waiting so long. But they were incredibly insensitive too- you explained your situation. If they were running behind they should have explained/apologised or made it up to you some how. Write a bad review & complain. They can’t get away with this this time nor in the future.

Im a hairdresser and im absolutely shocked by this.
I would put a very detailed review on google .
I pride myself on customer service, and i stress if im 5 minutes running behind.
At my salon you will be fussed over and given a lovely drink, biscuits and a chocolate while you wait.
If you are in the North East near NE6 , message me and i will do it for free for you .
Im really sorry this happened, we are not all like this i promise

Edited

My memory is awful but... Is that Heaton way? I miss Newcastle!

Crayfishforyou · 27/04/2024 07:17

YANBU
Leave them a really shitty google review

Nickinoo22 · 27/04/2024 07:01

Having worked in the industry for many , many years I have never heard of such a thing! Did reception not say anything when , with wet hair , you removed your gown and collected your coat ? They just ignored you walking out ?
Definitely name and shame and complain 'loudly' either in person or in writing.

Christ this is terrible service for anyone, but especially after what you have been through.

Ive been in my hairdressers a couple of times over the years when women have come in post chemo hair growth for first cuts and the staff have fallen over themselves to make it a great experience, really pampered them, reassured them.

That’s decency and showing someone a bit of kindness in a hard situation.

The salon you went to are just bloody awful.

Lindy2 · 27/04/2024 06:46

Your post makes me so sad.

I can fully understand how this haircut was a big thing. You should have felt nurtured, pampered and left happy with a great new haircut. Shame on that salon - especially as they knew what you have been through.

I'm assuming the cut never happened?

I hope you didn't pay them.

Please book somewhere else. Don't give up.

Andthereyougo · 27/04/2024 06:39

That’s awful treatment. Hope you didn’t pay.
Could you look at mobile hairdressers in your area? More time to listen to you and can’t forget about you at a sink.

Amx · 27/04/2024 06:27

I hope they feel utterly shit.

The worst part of it all was the lad who coined the nicknames for me was the one I’d had a massive crush on for about 3 years. Basically confirmed that interest would forever be unrequited 😆

He's sitting somewhere now, thinking about you, and wishing things were different....

gillefc82 · 27/04/2024 05:36

IsoldeWagner · 27/04/2024 04:53

@gillefc82 - Pepe le Ginge! Ah well, it certainly was a lesson learned!

FlatCola · 27/04/2024 05:31

God that's an awful service, I don't understand how they can overrun by an hour or manage to forget a client at the sinks. I'm not sure whether they managed to cut your hair within those 4hrs or not. It's even worse that you explained your circumstances in advance to them, so they had the chance to take extra special care. If you don't feel up to making a complaint or doing a review then I'm sure someone else will gladly vent on your behalf.
I find it really hard to complain at the time so I'm more likely to just be annoyed or sob after, suck up the cost and go elsewhere next time.

It can be hard to find a good hairdresser you trust and salon you feel relaxed in, so I hope you can get a personal recommendation and a positive experience to replace this horror in your mind.

anon4net · 27/04/2024 02:09

This is horrible @Calmondeck you deserved much better. Some cities have hairdressers that are known to be good places for people with cancer and medical conditions to go. Mine has a lovely, typical salon, that has gone out of their way to support people in those situations. I'm hoping you can find something like that.

You had every right to walk out. I hope things are better soon Flowers

As a mum with a DS (26) about to embark on his second craniotomy on Monday, I am so angry for you. How dare they treat you like that.

Hopefully you will find another hairdresser that will treat you with the kindness you deserve.

DS has a wonderful hairdresser, there will be someone out there for you too xx

I'm sorry to hear this. I hope everything goes ok ❤️

Topsyturvy78 · 27/04/2024 01:54

Did you have a colour put on your hair OP? That's the only explanation I can think of why you would wait 3 hours. Half hour- hour at most. I would be desperate for a wee.

gillefc82 · 27/04/2024 01:36

@IsoldeWagner sadly not. I’m not sure if it was because she had been really against me going allover blonde in the first place. She was quite vocal that she felt it was a mistake and I should just have some highlights instead. She thought I’d ruin my hair getting it all bleached and expected I wouldn’t be happy with it (admittedly this was more to do with how particular I am about my hair and not because she could predict it turning out as badly as it did).

Afterwards, she did keep trying to reassure/convince me it wasn’t as bad as I thought (it was) and that I should leave it and let it grow on me (it didn’t) before I made any more hasty changes.

If it was part of teaching me a life lesson, it worked - I didn’t do anything drastic with my hair colour again and waited until I was into my 30s to get balayage to go lighter in a more subtle and natural way.

I think there may only be one or two photos that exist memorialising the bad ‘do, but Pepe Le Ginge will never leave me 😂

Densol · 27/04/2024 01:22

OP I am a professional complainer. I complain about everything and always win.

BUT I didnt complain about a bad bleach job on my hair a few months back. There is something so vulnerable you feel in a salon when someone is working on your hair - its hard to explain - so you are defo not U for just walking out. Me, I just paid and vowed never to go back and found a great professional salon.

My son had a brain tumour op 5 years ago now. He rocks his half moon scar 👍🏼 I hope you get a lovely nice new hair do real soon x

alrightluv · 27/04/2024 01:11

I'm so sorry to hear this. And for you @Wornoutlady . I hope you're ok now?

Definitely contact them and leave bad reviews. They acted appallingly.

Wornoutlady · 27/04/2024 01:03

OP I am in the same boat. I had brain surgery in Sept that's left me partially blind but thankfully alive. And yesterday I went for a haircut as well, to correct the crooked weirdness that has been growing out for the past 6+ months. Being teary is par for the course. But being left to wait an hour here and there is absolutely going to make it worse. If you would like to talk privately I can PM you. Well done for going and well done for posting here. Every little bit helps.

Lagoony · 27/04/2024 00:10

You should name and shame. I would be, if I'd been treated so poorly my immediate reaction would be anger.

Fraaahnces · 27/04/2024 00:06

That is utterly appalling! Please write Google and Yelp reviews. They will never learn how to be humane unless it affects their business.
