Am I the only person that doesn't like Taylor Swift?

Her Music I mean.
Seems to be a ginormous following of all age groups! I don't get it, listened to a lot of her Music including the new Album - to me it just sounds like music for Children / Tweens?! What am I missing??

Go to any wedding and generally they don't tend to play much modern stuff at all, do they? I know they are catering for all ages, but they will mostly play for the bride and groom's generational tastes and the rest will be classics that everyone likes. I just can't imagine most generic pop hits of today becoming future wedding classics.

You are spot on.

pourmeawine · 20/04/2024 19:37

As Taylor fan since the first album, the need to enthusiastically say you're NOT a Taylor fan and criticise everything she does has always confused me.

Other people have relationships and don't get the criticism Taylor does.
Other people write songs about their life and don't get the criticism Taylor does.
Other people are in the press and don't get the criticism Taylor does.

I agree that some Taylor fans take it too far but the reason that Taylor fans are defensive is because it's never really made sense that that people seem to go out of their way to give negative opinions on Taylor and that doesn't really seem fair.

That's a ridiculous assumption. Of course they will be.

In 50 years what do you think people will be listening to? Popular music of today will be classics.

Similar to Madonna. Similar to many popular artists.

The music is schlock and will not stand the rest of time. I tried listening and it was dreadful rubbish.

I find the whole Swifty thing bewildering. Plain woman who releases bland, bland music.

Music doesn't appeal, a bit meh, but the gorgeous, clever Hadley Freeman (journalist/writer) is a mega fan and says she's a very poet-erly lyric writer, which I agree with. I'm going to try to learn to like her. My daughter has a ticket to a concert in June so will be delighted to play her music in the house.

Huh? You think her music is meh but because someone else likes her, you’re going to try and like her yourself? Weird.

TyneTeas · 20/04/2024 14:47

My teen read TS lyrics at me earlier.

I felt like I was being subjected to Vogon poetry, however as she does seem quite popular, her songs seemingly must appeal to a lot of others.

😂

Grapewrath · 20/04/2024 19:31

Her first album was good but tbh im completely over her whining about other people. She’s still going on about exes and Kim K years after the events- bore off. She just comes across as a petulant and bitter teenager tbh

Thevelvelletes · 20/04/2024 19:29

Never heard any of her material.
Get fed up of the never ending articles about her and whichever man is on the go

no i dont get it-the absolute fawning over some new album- omg i ant breathe an omg my life has change are some thinmgs ive read just today

a couple of songs are ok but no way in 50 years are people going to be playing them as classics

That's a ridiculous assumption. Of course they will be.

@SpicyMoth which MCR show were you at? I’m trying to figure out who the support was!

Josette77 · 20/04/2024 19:24

Yes. You are the only person in the world.

You are clearly very VERY unique.

OldHabitsDieScreaming · 20/04/2024 19:23

Ok, @SpicyMoth have it your way. I really cba with such wilful obtuseness.

@SummaLuvin @OldHabitsDieScreaming @tabulahrasa

Thanks for the suggestions / lyrics, will read/listen and report back :)

I’ll also nudge you in the direction of Maroon and So Long, London

You haven't 'offended' me. I just think it's bizarre that you would use Paramore as an example of why you wouldn't like TS when they are literally her support band.

If you'd said 'I'm a fan of Cannibal Corpse and Tibetan nose flute symphonies so obvs I hate Taylor Swift's music haha' then I could see your point but...

Support band =/= the same music though.
Nor does collaborating on stuff.

I don't see how it's that bizarre tbh, the genre's are different?
People are allowed to like one type of music and not like another, just because one band supports another band doesn't mean you simply have to like all the music.

When I went to see MCR they had a support band who I absolutely couldn't stand so I swanned off whilst they were performing until MCR came on - is that bizarre also?? I don't even recall their name, but they were an entirely different genre and it was not my thing at all lol.

Hayley has experimented with many different sounds & genre's. I only like one type.
Sure I could've prefaced by saying "old school" Paramore, but that's splitting hairs & being pedantic at that point imho.
Either way, again, at NO point did I "slag TS off".
I'm sure there's plenty of TS fans who don't like Paramore's music.

I like Foo Fighters music and dislike Billie Eilish's, yet they have performed together - That's not bizarre imo to compare and contrast the two simply because they've also performed together.

I should've known better before commenting on a thread where massive TS fans would come in to comment and defend their idol tbh 😂😂

MrsArcher23 · 20/04/2024 19:10

She's a cultural phenomenon and I can't wait for her concert in June. I was quite ambivalent this time last year but got swept up in the whole ticket craze last summer and was very lucky to book regular tickets at a regular price. Taking my niece (mega fan ) and my sister. Getting caught up in the excitement of it all. I don't care if it isn't cool, I'm over 50 so I don't care what people think anymore!

Mnk711 · 20/04/2024 18:59

I find her music very meh. I also don't really like Beyonce's music ducks for cover though I appreciate the strong female role model aspect of both women.

Not particularly proving your point at all imo, I didn't slag her off either?

I'm well aware that they're long term friends and have collaborated previously - I've seen video upon video on YouTube when friends have previously tried to get me into TS.

That doesn't change the fact that I absolutely do not like TS's music. I don't hate her as a person, but her genre and style just isn't for me?
The same way I hate modern Paramore and only really enjoy Hayley's older albums lol.
Sorry my music tastes offend you though I guess :S

Edited

What are some deep lyrics of hers than? Genuinely interested.

Depends what you like… mostly not the singles 😂 they usually seemed to be picked to be catchy radio hits

she does a lot of playing on words, not a huge favourite of mine, but as an example of that - Maroon from midnights where it’s both about the colour and maroon as to be left alone and trapped and lines like, That's a real fucking legacy to leave where it seems to be both leaving a legacy and that the legacy is to leave.

Or deeper in meaning, there are lots about her relationship with fame/the media/fans, I like nothing new from red or mad woman from folklore, but there are a couple about that on most albums tbh.

Pickled21 · 20/04/2024 18:51

She is very talented. I'm not a fan of her music though.

rollonretirementfgs · 20/04/2024 18:51

Her music isn't my thing but I think she is a fantastic role model for little girls. A natural looking girl, plays instruments, writes her own music and doesn't feel the need to act like an old slapper to get attention. I like her and she comes across as a really nice and intelligent woman

SummaLuvin · 20/04/2024 18:51

@exomoon fans (like me) love the deep cuts found in album tracks, but even her more commercial hits have good and witty writing. For example, Blank Space is written from the perspective of the character she felt the media portrayed her as - which was made funnier when trashy magazine started publishing articles asking who her new single was about, that would be you...

OldHabitsDieScreaming · 20/04/2024 18:49

exomoon · 20/04/2024 18:44

Any particular songs?

Try Champagne Problems /Tis The Damn Season / Tolerate It/ Ivy on Evermore.

I also particularly love Seven and This Is Me Trying on Folklore.

Hagbard · 20/04/2024 18:48

On the whole, I'm not a fan. Most of her music leaves me cold. However, there's a few I fucking love - anti hero, karma, the man, and shake it off
