DH will complain of something, headache, backache. Tonight is a sore eye. Yet he won’t take any pain relief. AIBU to tell him to stop complaining? He’s really driving me up the wall tonight with it.

I hear you... it never ends in my household, it's always something else - arm, foot, neck, knee etc. TBF he does have arthritis but he doesn't take meds unless he's in agony.

Of course when I thought I was having a heart attack he moaned all the way to the hospital that 'it was nothing' (thankfully it wasn't)

bananaboats · 20/04/2024 10:55

DH is exactly the same & it is very annoying but he gets no sympathy from me if he's not even going to try & help himself!

GoawaySunrise · 20/04/2024 10:52

My uncle is like this. Had pains in his leg and foot for weeks but just would lay in bed and moan, refused to do anything about it or go to Dr. His dw eventually said go or I'm calling an ambulance. He went and had to have his leg taken off at the knee from diabetes complications he had no idea about. I'll never understand it, and I've never met a woman who does this. I'm sure there are, but I don't know any.

Mrsjayy · 20/04/2024 10:50

My stepdad won't take painkillers he might take 1 paracetamol if my mum insists he has a medical condition that causes pain but nah he will just carry on like a brave soldier.

IncompleteSenten · 20/04/2024 10:46

I hate this.

Either take something to help or stfu about it.

Oh yeah men always do this. They won't take painkillers/meds because it might make them better, and then they won't have anything to whinge and moan about, and try to gain sympathy for.

I'm sure men never used to be like this. My dad (born in the 1930s) certainly wasn't - OR my uncles, OR my grandfathers.

Seems to be a 'man born after 1960' thing.

My FiL (born just pre WW1) was dreadful! He once kept poor MiL awake all night groaning, but still refused to take any painkillers. So bloody stubborn. Same with any meds. He once had a bad cough - evidently a nasty chest infection - just before we were due to take him on holiday - in winter.

Dh had to drag him to the GP (FiL still protesting that a ‘salt water gargle’ would sort it, FGS) and stand over him every time to make sure he took his ABs.

bradpittsbathwater · 20/04/2024 10:19

Can't stand moaning about little ailments. Get a grip.

God it winds me up! As a nurse doing shifts in A&E/UTC you see it a lot.
"My xxx hurts so much, it's really sore"
"What pain relief have you taken?"
"Oh nothing"

What the fuck are you expecting me to do to remove pain without pain relief!!!? WHY wouldn't you try it!? Some people are almost proud they haven't been weak and taken some which is just...baffling!

Oh you must inwardly eye roll all shift !

My dh does this. Won't take painkillers because they "don't do anything", then complains about being in pain. I ignore him tbh...not interested in the whinging if he won't do anything about it.

Mine too I just ignore him, he did get some prescription painkillers for an ailment but only takes them occasionally .

People are such dicks when it comes to taking pain relief.

GoldenTrout · 20/04/2024 10:11

DH has a thing about feeling cold or warm as a sign of illness. So on a cold, miserable day he'll be saying "I feel really cold, is it just me?" In a hopeful tone of voice; likewise on a hot day he's convinced he must be feverish because he feels hot. If I point out that it's 3/30 degrees, he's have something to worry about if the didn't feel cold/hot, he's clearly quite disappointed.

Mine does this. He will shuffle about in his dressing gown of doom, clutching himself and groaning, saying things like "I just can't get waaaarm".

I'll ask if he's taken anything for it, he says "like what?" I suggest paracetamol, he says "I don't know there they are" etc. Drives me mad.

Are we married to the same man? 😆

When my DH is 'not well,' he is always cold too. He walks around the room in that dressing gown, sniffing (though there's nothing there, so like dry sniffs,) and also 'coughing,' now and again, shuffling around in his slippers, and pushing his hand at me telling me to feel it as it's like a block of ice.

He has always been much colder than me. It has to be over 17 C outside for him to not be cold. People are different. I am always warm. I KNOW he gets cold/feels the cold, and yet he always has to regale me with how 'bitterly cold' he is, and shove his hand in my face to 'touch' or feel and says 'feel how cold I am feel ... FEEL.'

I have actually started saying (when he says he's cold,) 'I do NOT need to feel your hand. I know it's going to be bloody cold!'

I'm afraid I can NOT stand people who moan but will do sod all to help themselves OP. My DH knows not to whinge unless he's already taken pain killers, otherwise he just get's an earful, lol

Same here - do something about it or stop whinging.

fieldsofbutterflies · 20/04/2024 08:34

Mine is the same. I ask if he's had some painkillers or tablets, he says no, I say "well, stop moaning then". 🙄

I don't get it. Either it's attention seeking or they're weird and enjoy being in pain?

Ohyeahwaitaminute · 20/04/2024 08:05

My OH is the same. Drives me bananas 🍌.

I have ALL the sympathy in the world if he has actually tried a bit of self help (ie painkillers) and it hasn’t worked.

ZERO sympathy if the above steps have not been taken. Grrrrr.

mycatsanutter · 20/04/2024 07:59

Just completely ignore him. My DH will say that he has had knee trouble for 10 years I ask what the Dr said about it knowing full well he hasn't been.

mejon · 19/04/2024 22:28

My father is exactly the same. Takes a cocktail of different tablets each day for various ailments but won't take painkillers for his arthritic knees - or if he does, it's one paracetamol only. He gets very little sympathy.

aintnospringchicken · 19/04/2024 21:49

DH is exactly the same. He'll moan and groan about a sore throat, headache ,back or any other body part but won't take any painkillers. I just ignore him.If he tries to help himself by taking paracetamol or ibuprofen then he'll get my sympathy.

ChangeAgain2 · 19/04/2024 21:32

My husband has taken to his bed with toothache. He's been useless for 2 days. The worse thing is I didn't get two days in bed following a C-section. I had 4 hour dental surgery and came home to 2 kids, dirty dishes and was expected to parent.

AdultReindeer · 19/04/2024 20:45

Definitely YANBU. If someone says this to me, I'm likely to tell them to shut and enjoy their headache then.

Haha brilliant! Might say that next time.

I think for a sore eye a pharmacist can dispense over the counter eye drops? I’m sure your DH will grumble about that too though, sometimes I don’t know why we bother trying to be helpful.

Yes I am going to go to boots tomorrow as he is working, they have a a chemist and I’ve taken a picture but not sure if he will take them but if I get something there is no excuse. Fed up of him moaning.

DH does this.

Now I have a DS that says he took one paracetamol yesterday and claims "it's still not working"

KestrelMoon · 19/04/2024 20:54

Farmwifefarmlife · 19/04/2024 20:44

I do agree but he won’t do anything suggested in the NHS website nor will he see a doctor.
