Shoes on or shoes off?

Asheyr · 15/04/2024 11:05

I often hear how no shoes in the house is a stereotypically Asian thing.

We have had a lot of plumbers, builders and estate agents in and they have without fail all taken off their shoes unprompted. Even the Estate agent lads in their very early 20s.

Our pales floors are currently spotless as we are selling so that may encourage this.

We are no shoes mostly but occasionally allow shoes in the kitchen if we are going back out/doing a big bin job.

What about you?

I have a friend who insists on shoes off. She has very chilly tiles in her kitchen so i sit there with freezing feet whilst her and her family have lovely warm slippers on

When we were all young graduates we had a friend who was living in a family apartment for free while he redecorated it for sale. He put in new cream carpets but never hoovered and generally cleaned to the standard of a clueless young guy. The feel of the dust and crumbs underfoot in my pop socks when I'd come from work Envy

BobnLen · 15/04/2024 21:30

I probably wouldn't want pale floors so would see it as an extra expense to get them changed, nothing to do with shoes, I just don't like them

BobnLen · 15/04/2024 21:29

Don't care what others do, I wear slippers in the house

mrsdineen2 · 15/04/2024 21:27

Only shoes? I make anyone who's been on bus, train or taxi that day change into a shorts and t shirt set that I supply.

Sunquest · 15/04/2024 21:25

I don't care. Take your shoes off or leave them on. Whatever people are comfortable with. Although tbh I'd rather not see peoples bare feet. The thought of wearing manky old slippers from a slipper basket makes me laugh though.

EricHebbornInItaly · 15/04/2024 21:24

Shoes off. Culturally in my home country, it’s seen as very dirty to wear shoes inside.

I keep slippers for guests, and a shoe rack for them to put their shoes on.

CelesteCunningham · 15/04/2024 21:21

We take ours off for comfort, don't care what guests do.

Definitely cultural. Where I'm from it would be seen as very rude to expect your guests to remove their shoes, and ridiculous to have flooring that can't be walked on (notions).

DC have a few friends whose parents are strictly shoes off, I hate that tbh and feel uncomfortable sitting there in my socks and wobbling in the hall getting them on and off.

Also hate when people take theirs off coming into our house but if they want to then I don't stop them obviously.

notquiteruralbliss · 15/04/2024 21:04

Shoes (including wellies or hiking boots) on. But I have hard floors and consider carpets to be both naff and somewhat disgusting.

Enko · 15/04/2024 20:41

Shoes off. Not Asian but Scandinavian.. always took shoes off when we came inside or went to other peoples home.

Dh took years to learn (British) odd as he sats he prefers it.

JustRingJoeDuffy · 15/04/2024 20:39

Shoes off. I bring slippers when I visit friends and they do the same when they come to me.
I keep slippers and flipflops for thoss who want them. Though I dont really get so many visitors as no family live locally.

SaltyGod · 15/04/2024 20:31

Shoes on in my house please.

As directed at the houses of others, as they prefer, but I can’t remember the last time I was asked to remove them

IF your left sock has holes in I'd suggest you review your default position

Well done, I wondered who would spot that ...erm 😳

So you say. Funnily enough your opinion is not shared by all.

No shoes in our house. Shoes off on the doorstep and it’s either slippers or socks - no bare feet tho as I don’t want sweaty feet marks on my floors.
We’ve got slippers for family and disposable slippers for guests.
I take my own slippers when visiting friends and family

TheSpoonyNavyReader · 15/04/2024 20:25

Shoes off, always.

We all have slippers for the house and we have slippers for guests that I kept here and we have a slipper basket for guests to wear and then are washed when they leave, we also have shoe covers for trades/workmen.

The dogs are trained to stand on the door mat and have their paws wiped when they come in.

Its rude to not remove your shoes when entering the house.

Thursa · 15/04/2024 20:24

I’m not bothered. Whatever you’re comfortable with. We have 3 dogs and a cat. Tile floor in the main living area, and it gets bloody cold in the winter. I don’t wear shoes in the house but that’s for comfort not cleanliness. We have 2 hoovers, a carpet cleaner, and a floor cleaning machine, so any mess is quickly dealt with.

Hopingtobe4 · 15/04/2024 20:19

I take my shoes off in my house but I don't expect guests to.

I will ask on initial visits to someone's house but I think unless you have cream/light coloured carpet you're being ridiculous. I only know one person who makes you and they don't have cream carpet or very clean floors so I don't know why tbh.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 15/04/2024 20:05

I rather hedge my bets and take my left shoe off whilst leaving the right shoe on.

Although once, when hurried, I've done the reverse!
How we all laughed!
No harm done.

yikesanotherbooboo · 15/04/2024 20:11

We wear slippers but I wouldn't inconvenience my guests nor expect them to remove their shoes. If elderly people, those I don't know well or guests dressed up for a party were here I would keep my shoes on so that they didn't have to worry about feeling awkward.

We are a ‘however you feel comfortable’ house. Hard floors downstairs and no crawling babies - I personally always take mine off but I keep my floors very clean, hoover the downstairs multiple times a day (one of those cordless ones, I’m not plugging in and out every 5 minutes 😂) and the wood is mopped twice a week and the tiles are steamed at least twice a week, my pet peeve is gritty bits of anything on the floor.
All of us living here prefer shoes off in the house.
i don’t care whether or not visitors take theirs off or keep them on.
I don’t mind taking mine off either when I go to someone else’s house but if you insist on it at least have the decency to have clean floors!

Mumaway · 15/04/2024 20:03

Shoes off, always. We have guest slippers (nice ones for individual family members, cheapo disposables for any other guests that want them), and shoe covers for tradesmen etc

Sheknowsaboutme · 15/04/2024 20:01

Shoes off. Ive spent thousands on Amtico flooring and want to to look its best.

changedusername190 · 15/04/2024 20:00

we use plastic shoe covers so that we don't have mess.
