Prostitute checked into our hotel!

Ok, so away in London for a couple of days with DH and DD (10). We were staying in a 4* Hotel which is part of a large chain of hotels, not a small independent. We went to reception about 10.30 on the 2nd morning and was met with a lady (who was very obviously a prostitute) being told her room would be ready in 5 mins and her handing over £100 in cash to the receptionist. The hotel is £250+ a night and check in is 3pm!

AIBU to this this made the hotel feel a bit icky and sleazy after I saw that? Husband and I spoke briefly when DD wasn’t listening and he said “well they have to work somewhere!”. Not sure if I’m turning into a prude in my old age, but I really didn’t feel comfortable in the hotel after I saw that. I’m sure for her, it was a safe and comfortable place to work and I know this goes on in hotels, I suppose just seeing it in broad daylight shocked me a bit. We knew what she was there for, the receptionist knew what she was there for, the man behind us in the queue knew what she was there for, maybe I thought she and the hotel should have been a bit more discreet if they allow this to go on in their hotel, especially when it’s a family friendly hotel and there were a lot of children around?

Judgy or what? It's really none of your business in the first place, other people won't care if it is true and she's probably earning in an hour what many people make a day.
Better for her to be safe. what was she wearing? Skimpy clothles isn't a clue because many young women wear such things and they aren't all on the game.

ichundich · 13/04/2024 15:24

You come across as very old-fashioned and a bit sexist, OP. Try to enjoy your weekend in London.

Finlesswonder · 13/04/2024 15:24

Some of you sound quite sheltered. It's obvious prostitutes are prostitutes.

Corestly · 13/04/2024 15:24

Why does it matter? If it's your Dd you're worried about, I imagine she didn't notice the woman at all, or if she did, would have thought nothing of it.

Also, it's possible to hire some hotel rooms by the hour or the day - maybe she wasn't a sex worker at all but having an affair or something.

HelloMiss · 13/04/2024 15:24

What is offending you so much?

Geebray · 13/04/2024 15:24

Are you saying that people have sex in hotels? Oh my god!!!!

NeverEnoughPants · 13/04/2024 15:23

Oh my. Are you telling me that people sometimes have sex in hotel rooms? That's shocking.

Who knew!!

A few hotels now let out rooms during the day for a cheaper rent. Not all used by prostitutes! And how was she obviously one? Were you assuming that by the way she dresses etc?

HelloMiss · 13/04/2024 15:23

So it's a 'family friendly hotel'?

What does that even mean in this scenario??

So what?

BoohooWoohoo · 13/04/2024 15:23

Yabu
All hotels will have people like prostitutes, customers inviting escorts, drug taking, people obviously having affairs….
Your money is obviously as valuable to the hotel as the “immoral” people who keep them in business.

supercalafragilisticexpealidocious · 13/04/2024 15:23

God MN is exhausting sometimes. I can perfectly well understand how you would know she was a prostitute OP. Not sure why everyone is being so difficult about it. I can't decide whether it would bother me or not though...I think probably not unless I could hear it in the next room.

EvenStillIWantTo · 13/04/2024 15:22

I once had a hotel room, the balcony of which directly overlooked an apartment with a red light in the window and a literal queue of men waiting to get in.

After that, what's one random prostitute 😂

TurquoiseDress · 13/04/2024 15:22

Omg the horror of it all!

<Clutching my pearls>

Persipan · 13/04/2024 15:21

Never mind, misread something

But you still don't know she's a sex worker

Tempnamechng · 13/04/2024 15:21

Irrelevant, but you just reminded me of when I was accused of bring a prostitute in a posh hotel. I wasn't by the way, and wasn't even dressed like one, but we'd been on a night out and my friend had gone to bed earlier than me and locked me out of our room after taking the only key. 🤣
I think you are being ott by the way.

GrumpyL · 13/04/2024 15:21

She paid £100 as she counted it out in £10 notes as she gave it to the receptionist. I don’t want to get into a discussion about you shouldn’t judge a women by what she was wearing etc, let’s just say it was very obvious that she was a prostitute hiring room for the day. This was 10.30am in the morning, not the night.

needsomewarmsunshine · 13/04/2024 15:21

I'm also interested to know what marked her out as a prostitute.

Mrsjayy · 13/04/2024 15:21

Where did you think prostitutes worked ? I mean a fancy pants hotel is probably "safer" for her. I'm not trying to be all knowing but I don't think it's something I'd worry about or feel unsafe.

TossieFleacake · 13/04/2024 15:20

Please explain how she was 'very obviously a prostitute'.
Unless she had a red light bulb hanging above her head and was wearing a sandwich board showing her offerings and prices, I find it hard to understand what made it so obvious.

JamesPringle · 13/04/2024 15:20

Was she dressed like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman? And not wearing panty hose?

IhateSPSS · 13/04/2024 15:20

Rooms by hour are very common. There's a hotel in Bradford, close to where I work, that proudly advertises their hourly rate. So YABU to be shocked.

Also instead of worrying about sex work offending your sensibilities maybe you could re position your lens to hope she's safe and uses this hotel because there an element of trust in the staff? Better than the SW having a pimp monitoring yet every move and getting into cars.

juniorspesh · 13/04/2024 15:20

Of all the little details here the one that made me laugh most was “£100 in cash”. Like a little kid’s idea of a lot of money. 5 notes. Barely a night in the pub these days.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 13/04/2024 15:19

I think she should probably switch off her flashing neon sign attached to her head next time, then she won't be so obviously a prostitute and you can go about your business happily.

misssunshine4040 · 13/04/2024 15:19

YABU so much so it's ridiculous.

Firstly, check in early if there is a room available.
Secondly, £100 per night may be the walk in rate for a cheapest room type.
Third, you have proof she was a prostitute?
No one on the front desk would ever ask a person for such information.

People stay in hotels for all kinds of reasons.

EveryoneJapan · 13/04/2024 15:19

A lot of assuming going on here and you know what they say, when you assume you make an ass out of u and me!
