I vacuumed my hair trying to get rid of lice

Fedup with scratching and the treatments haven't worked so while I was hoovering the house I got so annoyed I held it to my head it felt really good 😂
Everyone else thinks it's very weird.

... just applied the 8h Hedrin.

When I was doing the pre-application combing, I showed my dh the comb (and must have looked a bit manic with the whites of my eyes showing all round) see! See!

Dh - they just look like little specs of skin. Have you seen a recognisable louse in your own hair yet?

Me - ah but a mumsnetter was just saying she's seen bits of skin that are actually lice under the microscope. Just now, honestly, it's a current thread. Baby nymph lice, honestly

Dh looked concerned. About me, not the lice. I'm losing my mind.

But I've got the hedrin turban on so it's all good

Mumoftwo1312 · 04/04/2024 22:20

OK I'm inspired to put on the hedrin 8h stuff tonight.

Dd has been full-marksed and combed with the Nitty Gritty 2 days ago, I can't see a single speck in her hair and it looks gorgeous and clean and swishy.

@Okayornot has terrified me that what I think is dandruff in my own hair is actually microscopic lice and I've been reinfecting my poor dd aaargh.

Dh thinks I'm paranoid in the style of Lady Macbeth as outlined above.

But he'll be sleeping next to a Hedrin-turbaned wife tonight. Wish me luck

Okayornot · 04/04/2024 22:01

I don't think any of the OTC treatments work if you only apply them for the short period of time on the instructions. Ive found if you leave them on overnight they sometimes do the job (or at least get you 90% of the way there).
We had a nightmare when our DDs all with very thick long hair (ie over an hour to comb each properly) kept passing it around. One of them had a child's microscope and it was incredible how often little bits of skin or dirt, viewed under the microscope, turned out to be tiny lice (and then they would attack each other on the slide!). But it at least meant we knew when the infestation was truly over, which took a lot longer and a lot more combing than we had hoped.

XenoBitch · 04/04/2024 21:50

I had a really bad case of them years ago. I didn't know any kids at all, so where they came from was a mystery.

I dyed my hair, and that seemed to do the job.

Saying that, I used to love spending hours combing them out and squishing them.

Not helpful but it anyone else scratching their head now! We had them last summer and I’m traumatised from it!

Yep me! I'm still traumatised from the mice infestation we had in our loft and kitchen last autumn, took months to clear, now endless headlice! I'm cursed with pestilence.

Turkish lemon cologne. You can buy Duru in a spray bottle or buy it in a litre size or more and secant into a spray bottle.

Works and makes your hair smell lively and the smell deters them from coming back.

AllTheChaos · 04/04/2024 21:10

Awwww @SerenityNowInsanityLater, that’s adoreable! I wish my cats would let me hoover them 😂

MyCousinDaphne · 04/04/2024 19:42

Tea tree oil neat has always worked here. 15 minutes on and then comb comb comb with conditioner every day for a week. You need to wash the oil out with fairy liquid before water or it never comes out!

Ilovegoldies · 04/04/2024 19:31

I actually miss nits. I used to love combing them out. I'm a bit strange like that.

Mumoftwo1312 · 04/04/2024 19:31

Ps the "me too" was the dandruff/lice issue!

Mumoftwo1312 · 04/04/2024 19:28

CammyChameleon · 04/04/2024 17:58

Fucking hate lice, going through them yet again now. Combed the whole house, DS1 appears to be patient zero, seems to have only spread to me. I've had dandruff issues for twenty years, so an itchy scalp doesn't make me think "lice!"

Got Hedrin 8 hour treatment for free from the chemist (yay, Wales) and it appeared to be killing adults way before the 8 hours were up!

If I could choose two species to go extinct, it would be lice and fleas, fucking things!

Me too. I'm going to join this thread for the solidarity because I'm losing sleep over it.

We definitely, I mean I think definitely, eradicated dd's headlice about two months ago and then she caught a fresh load last week. She hates being combed

I didn't catch it the first time but I'm so itchy now, I'm convinced I've got them.

But last time she had them none of us caught them... I still scratched my head raw just thinking about them, making me think I had them.

Like Lady Macbeth scrubbing her hands till they bled because she thought she saw blood on them! Aaargh

Anon9898 · 04/04/2024 19:27

I'm with you it feels so nice..my dad used to to it to me as a child and now I do it to the kids too lol

Zooeyzo · 04/04/2024 19:24

Well if its good enough for people to pay over a £100 I'll use my hetty hoover and hope for the best! I usually pick them out of the kids hair so know that eggs are difficult to get but the lice are easy to move from the hair but very fast so tend to hide.

I've been combing with conditioner and did the treatment for 3 weeks.
Anyway just to report I've stopped itching.
I'm going to fry the eggs with the straighteners.

As I said earlier, you won’t kill any of the LIVE eggs as they're less than 1mm from your scalp which is too close to get a hair straightener! Yes you'll kill the actual lice but not the live eggs! So in 10 days - 2 weeks they'll hatch. All you're doing is cementing the dead eggs to your hair

Hedgehog23 · 04/04/2024 19:07

Hedrin once (but use it twice maybe 7-10 days apart). Nit comb. Check free circa a week after second application. Treat everyone in the house.

Antibetty · 04/04/2024 19:04

it is weird. however, if it feels good ... just be aware that nits (the eggs) are sticky and not so easily removed. get a nit comb on the job!!

headstone · 04/04/2024 19:03

I have thick wavy hair, so I sympathise. I remember one time resorting to bleaching my hair blond to get rid of them. However last time 2 doses of Hedrin worked.

hampsteadmum · 04/04/2024 18:59

Professional lice treatment companies like Hair Force hairforceclinics.com/ do exactly that. Vacuum the hair. Check out their videos. They have special attachments as I recall. I've taken my kids there when they were young. They also go through the hair with a Nitty Gritty comb after vacuuming. I suggest you "re-vacuum" in a week and keep using the nitty gritty comb if you can. It's hard with curly hair but with some Moroccan Oil (or similar) it may become easier.

RockahulaRocks · 04/04/2024 18:49

There’s a place in Wandsworth that will charge you £120 for hoovering your hair to get rid of lice (not just for fun). Results in our house have been achieved using NitWits spray & the white lice comb from Superdrug on DD (most effective one I’ve come across to date), otherwise smothering the wee shites in hair dye. I also treat DD routinely every 4-6 weeks after one of her nursery teachers mentioned that the staff anecdotally keep the lice at bay using this method.

KeinLiebeslied54321 · 04/04/2024 18:36

I can understand why you wanted to do it, but not sure it will help! Good luck shifting them.

Deborah54 · 04/04/2024 18:34

I don’t have lice but I think I’ll hoover my head just for the novelty 😂

AllHopeandRainbows · 04/04/2024 18:24

@CammyChameleon can we add thread worms to this 🙏🏼 DD had these recently and it was 🤮
