Do you vape?

I know this will attract judgement but I'm not asking for criticism, just discussion.

Never been a smoker but recently took up vaping. Dh does it and so do a few friends. I was curious. We are going through a very stressful time in life - young dc and no help, demanding job, house renovation. I was winding down in the evenings using booze and junk food which wasn't good for me either so I suppose I just wanted to try something that helped relax me. I do enjoy it but I don't think I'm 'addicted' per se, for example I don't take it out with me during the day and don't miss it. I just use it in the evenings.

Anyway bizarrely I have health anxiety which is quite ridiculous when I think of all of the unhealthy habits and coping mechanisms I have. But I do worry about the vape. There is so much conflicting info out there - loads of sources saying it's much better than smoking others saying it's as bad or worse. All the alleged health issues they can cause but no definitive studies as they've not been around long enough.

So I guess I'm wondering if you vape, why? What does it bring you? And do you worry about the health impact?

There’s a documentary on bbc about vaping at the minute. Research is on going of course but it’s not just water and a couple of other bits you are breathing in and I can’t see how that is anything than bad for you. I also feel people vape more often so more as it’s very handily always there and easy to access not like having to go outside to smoke.

While it was great initially for smokers to wean off nicotine some vapes have just as much cigs. Watching kids and young adults potentially feck up their lungs is so worrying not really understanding there could be a long term risk.

I come from a family of smokers whose health has been destroyed by smoking with awful Lung diseases.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 23/03/2024 08:13

No need to put vapourised propylene glycol in my lungs from a weird electric steam dummy.

I relax through exercise: go running, hot shower, feel amazing AF for hours afterwards.

They definitely don't know. They really don't. One of my ultimate rules is that they will not see me doing it. My dh has always done it and I've had chats with my older two about how daft it is (especially as they are starting seniors soon and will no doubt come into contact with kids doing it). I'm not worried about that. Nobody knows that I do it except my dh.

your older two are starting seniors soon… so 11?

* I just use it in the evenings. In the evenings when the kids are in bed I will have it in the living room while watching tv*

So they are holed up in their rooms all night, guaranteed every night?

They will smell it.

Odd you think that you could get away with vaping only in the evenings with 11/12 year olds.

TheNewDeer · 23/03/2024 05:34

dare i say it…. I also find it weird that an adult, a parent no less, would go from never having smoked to picking up a vape and taking the conscious decision to just start.

Yes, weird. 🤷

The other thing about vaping is it looks bloody ridiculous. I always feel embarrassed for people doing it.

This! People with them on a cord round their neck look like they have dummies?

So glad that so many people on here think it's minging. It fucking stinks and it is so antisocial.

I used to smoke then started vaping over a year ago. Of course its just swapping one bad habit for another but that's the point, it wasn't originally intended for people who didn't smoke cigarettes. It's cheaper for me at £10 a week instead of £15 + and it doesn't make me stink. I still vape outside and away from the kids just as I did with cigarettes but my clothes and hair don't stink anymore. Even after washing my hands they would still smell a bit like cigarette smoke where as that doesn't happen anymore.

I smoked £300 a month, 10 years ago, vaping now costs me £25 a month, buy in bulk and use discount offers. I enjoy it actually.

vaping is such an unknown and we have heard all sorts of stories of potential problems that I’m not convinced it’s a reasonable alternative to something else or as a stand-alone habit that you have picked up.
However
Its worth mentioning that it can’t be singled out as a baddy unless we also acknowledge the many bad health habits people have
such as
Drinking Alcohol
Eating meat
Eating processed meats and fatty foods et al
The above all cause cancers, heart disease and all manor of illnesses.

Vaping is just another bad habit amongst many and whilst it may be considered it affects others too, re the smell etc. burning flesh in a restaurant or bar is no less offensive and probably more to some.

Better to take up a healthy habit like a sport or walking. Keep away from all the nasties or cut down, at least, on all bad habits.

Nicely put. People don’t also realise that raising stress levels in the body causes your immune system to lower, I was actually told to put off stoping smoking by my rheumatologist during my mothers illness as he thought it would be counter productive. I now vape.
People adding ‘what example does it set for your children’ it’s not illegal at 18, so don’t allow them until then. I have a greater issue with children being indoctrinated by their parents into religion. Physical addiction is far easier to overcome than mental ones.

This product is being marketed for children. It's completely unregulated and the counterfeit disposables are an unknown. Those are the ones that children get hold of.

Popcorn lung is just one potential risk, who knows what the other ones are? There's talk of banning disposable vapes in Wales; the sooner the better too.

I don't understand adults who've never smoked taking up this habit? If you have children then you're setting them up for this too.

Judgemental nonsense. Wales is a bloody nanny state as it is. Look into popcorn lung to understand what you have spouted. Want to ban cheese? Chocolate, alcohol, kebabs, the list is endless. People don’t realise the NHS is still supported by smokers.

For those of you happy to vape, would you be happy for your children to vape (especially if they had no desire to smoke)?

No, I wouldn't want my child vaping. I also wouldn't want them driving a car, going to nightclubs, or drinking alcohol. But I don't feel like a hypocrite for doing those things because I'm an adult.

Do you seriously never do one single thing that's bad for your health? You live the perfect life of pure asceticism?

... and lithium ion batteries, in the hands of children. These are unstable and dangerous when wet or damaged.

Children can't buy a packet of cigarettes online, nobody can, but anybody can access and purchase vapes online and from dodgy outlets selling counterfeits; those places will happily sell them to children.

Yes that's an issue
As is under age drinking etc, the same as smoking was when I was young. I started smoking at 12
But there needs to be a way that adults can vape, the same as adults can choose to drink or smoke without being penalised because unscrupulous shops are selling to children

AuntMarch · 22/03/2024 17:57

I do. I thought it would help me with my 20 a day smoking habit. And it did, but only by replacing it with another habit, it's just a different thing to need to quit now.

I was an "invincible" (stupid) 15 year old who definitely wouldn't get addicted when I first smoked. I don't understand why anyone would start either as an adult.

Popcorn lung isn't relevant, the chemical is banned in the U.K. and has been for some time
The chemical is in cigarettes in much greater quantities but nobody is going on about smoking and popcorn lung...

It is relevant, so many counterfeit versions the chemicals in which are completely unknown and those are what are being sold to children who don't have 'adult' access. They should never have entered the UK and there is no established disposal route for them.

I work in the electronics industry and the number of calls I get from schools (primary as well) asking for help with vapes from children. It's horrifying.

crumblingschools · 22/03/2024 17:39

@NC03 many of the vapes people (especially children) get hold of are not legal ones so I assume it could be a problem

True and they should 100% be banned
But that's a bit like.. someone buying fake alcohol and ending up in hospital because of it
Legal regulated alcohol is fine but you can't buy fake vodka with antifreeze in and then say all vodka should be banned because you bought under the counter stuff knowing it could be dodgy

I do also agree disposable ones are a big issue. Mine is a reusable so the only waste is the liquid bottles (100ml ones) and a small metal coil

very bizarre that all the posters saying ridiculous or gross seems to have bypassed you op

but me and my “weird” comment seems to have cut you very deep

If you read my replies I said below that 'looking ridiculous' isn't really an issue to me since I don't do it outside of my home. If people think it's gross that's down to them. I suppose it is a bit.

I take issue with you saying I'm 'fucking weird' vaping because of kids and a reno which kind of comes across as a bit of a superior way of saying look at you not coping with life, how tragic.

Either way you've derailed the thread with adding absolutely no valuable input to the actual subject of vaping so I'll leave it there. Have a great weekend :)

Your repetitive replies are weirder...
