So I am working away in London for a few nights (never had to before so don't really understand the rules)

DH said as neither of us have been to London, he could join me (obviously pay for his own transport) but surely he wont be able to stay in my hotel room?

If you haven't tried it, you can't say you don't like it.

Great analogy actually with all this London conversation.

People saying they haven't been and don't want to.

If you've been once and hated it, fair play.

If you've never been, then yes, I judge your lack of curiosity.

The point being that some people just have different interests and tastes. Some people, shockingly, just aren't bothered about going to London. I've not interest in going to Dubai, so I haven't been. I'm not about to spend a fortune going somewhere I don't want to go.

London is similarly expensive to visit and actually, it's a bit of a shithole in many ways, so fair enough.

I was fine until I mentioned it to DH, he was like do you really want to get on the tube to central London by yourself, I wouldn't recommend it!

There's nothing to worry about!

Why would someone say they wouldn't recommend that you get on the tube on your own?

Over a million people travel into London every day, many of them on the tube.

Which part of London are you going to be in?

I'm Scot and really rate Scottish cities but London is a world mega city and does have a different level of arts and culture to all other UK cities. Partly because of size and partly due to being capital of the UK.
It doesn't mean that Glasgow and Edinburgh aren't great places with good culture.

My comment was aimed at the people rhyming off other “UK” cities and completely ignoring anywhere that isn’t England

No he definitely can't go.

Against company policy

Gross misconduct

depends on the company.

aintnospringchicken · 18/03/2024 11:36

When our 2 DC were primary school age we accompanied DH on a couple of business trips that coincided with half term.DH booked a family room at a Premier Inn and all we had to pay for was evening meals for DC and I and breakfast for me(kids ate breakfast free). We had nice trips to York and Legoland while DH worked in a nearby office. We drove down and got the petrol payed for.DH's company didn't mind as long as DH didn't claim for anything other than his own expenses. The room at The Premier Inn would cost the same whether there were 4 people staying or just one.
I would let your DH accompany you if your company were ok with that.

Hello98765 · 18/03/2024 11:30

Nope, not that they want different things to me.

Just that they didn't on one single occasion, one time in their life, try visiting the global city in their small island country.

That's not about life goals or aspirations or wants. It's just about having the get up and go to do something, one time.

But you can do things outside of London Confused

🙄that is ridiculous, the tube is fine.

Tourists manage everyday, just use google maps.

Are you being sarcastic?

Ask. Every company is different.

I used to travel with DP to the USA frequently with DP on his business trips. Provided he was prepared to travel economy, rather than the usual business class, they would even pay for my flight.

We just had to pay for meals. The room was a flat rate so it made no difference there.

That was very generous of your DH and reading this has made me feel like a right cow! I’ve always made my DH pay for his own flight in the back of the plane as there’s no way I was giving up my business class seat with flat bed 😂. I did manage to bump him up to join me once though.

Edinburgh

Great for a city of its size. Not comparable to the scale and range of London.

Good god he wants to come because he doesn't think you can navigate a fucking train
Hmm

I'm staggered that vast numbers of people don't like marmite and some people have never even tried it.

What is the world coming to.

Its a phenomenally London and Englandshire centric thread

Often is.

For Londoners who talk about diversity and breadth of culture, many come across as incredibly blinkered.

charliefair · 18/03/2024 11:30

KatieBr · 18/03/2024 08:01

Nobody is going to know.

fluffycatkins · 18/03/2024 11:29

It would be fine in the company DH works for and I stayed in such crappy hotels for my work no one would want to come with me.
But OP I'm sure you can manage London by yourself if you want to.

Rubbish it depends
I have worked in local, regional and national government and in large and small companies from FTSE 100 to tiny and it has always been fine.

You'd almost think the UK doesn't have three other countries and capital cities.

Three others?

I am staggered that you could live your whole life in the UK and not venture to London once. And express no interest in doing so.

Travelling in and around London is perfectly safe and so easy OP, please don’t feel intimidated!

Which part of London is your hotel in? I could give you some tips on what to see and do, where to go and how to get there?

Also, I’ve travelled a lot with work over the years, in the UK and internationally. If my DH fancies the location somethings he comes for a night or 2. As long as I don’t claim anything for his expenditure it’s never been an issue. It’s very common.

TimeandMotion · 18/03/2024 11:25

This has probably been said but is this more about your husband being controlling than you wanting him to come too?

As long as it does not distract inform your work or cost the company any additional money to have him there, it would be fine. After all you normally go to work the day after sharing a room with your husband, don’t you?

But do not let him plant idea in your head that you are too weak or inexperienced to do this alone. Of COURSE it’s fine to go on the tube by yourself! Most people commute alone.

DepartureLounge · 18/03/2024 11:24

KatieBr · 18/03/2024 10:57

This sounds amazing, eating alone, child free, wine, BLISS

Hang on a minute, does this mean that as well as trailing along like your minder, your DH is planning on bringing a DC along too?

I think your DH's behaviour sounds controlling too (you reminded me of a character in the play Bazaar & Rummage who hasn't left the house for four years because her husband insists on telling her in great detail about all the rapes and murders that go on 'out there').

But if you've got a DC that will need to come too then it sounds like he's just desperate not to be left alone taking responsibility for his own child, and you should come down on that like a tonne of bricks imo. It's a work trip and you need to be able to focus on work. Don't jeopardise your career for him, because I've a feeling you may need to be able to support yourself in the future.

You'll be fine in central London btw.
