People who don’t carry their bank cards with them

I was in Sainsbury’s this morning and systems are down. No contactless, chip n pin taking ages to go through. Unable to buy gift cards, mobile top up vouchers.

Systems going down like this happen not very often but when they do it’s awful.

On the self scan next to me a woman screamed at the manager on why she can’t pay on her mobile.

Why do many people don’t carry their bank cards anymore? The cards don’t weigh much. Plus if the contactless payment system goes down, hopefully their card will go through via chip n pin. Also they won’t look like idiots either. No sympathy for these.

Regarding contactless payments- sometimes your bank, NOT the retailer etc asks you to do a CnP payment as part of security. “I dunno my PIN”. You can change your PIN to any number you want (not 1234, 1111) at any ATM under PIN services.

cash is legal tender!

Legal tender is a meaningless term.

So people paying with phone is too long but cash is OK?!

No, paying with a card is quicker, I have used both phone and card and card wins for me. I don't often use cash but probably have about £100 in my purse in case I need it

God knows why it takes longer but it certainly does for some people. They fumble around with their phone finding their Clubcard then fiddle some more to pay. Both my cards are in my hand and it’s the work of seconds to use them.

Same here 😁
And I'm sticking with what works.

People who never have cash away from home annoy me more than those not carrying cards to the local shops.

Oops, I'm really annoying as I don't carry cash or my cards to the local shop! 😬🤣

I can get cash out with my banking app, mind you (but only NatWest and Tesco ATMs), if I needed to.

That's great! Apparently you can do it from the digital wallet on the phone, I'm going to try that!

I really don't get the budgeting thing, and saying cash = easier to budget. I just don't see how.

I have a spreadsheet with all my usual payments on, plus I input every other payment I make during the month. It tells me how much I have left after all my known outgoings, and I never over-spend.

Plus I don't get left with a load of coins in my purse where I've used notes to pay for things. The money I have left is all available in my bank, not part-purse, part-bank.

Maybe if you've no self control and can't stop tapping your card to buy stuff, where with cash you can only spend what's in you purse, or you aren't able to log purchases for some reason. 🤷‍♀️

Most people’s lives are kept in their phone these days, not just “young people”. Most of the older generation are on Facebook now to keep in touch, do online banking, purchase on Amazon, take precious photos etc.

Why do some of the “old people” feel the need to convince said “young people” that they shouldn’t be taking advantage of modern technology if they find it convenient? (Which let’s face it, is the whole point of it!)

This whole thread is based around luddites who won’t move with the times feeling they are somehow superior despite living in the past, telling people how they should or shouldn’t live their lives. It’s thoroughly bizarre. None of the tech users feel the need to berate anyone for making different choices or not moving with the times. If others want to - let them!

I feel no need to convince others that they shouldn't take advantage of modern technology, I'm highly computer literate, have an advanced smart phone and use online banking but don't see any advantage at all in paying using a phone wallet when debit or credit cards are so simple and much smaller/lighter to carry around in a small pocket.

I've actually had a mobile since the early 1990's and a computer since the 1980's and use tech when it are better than the alternative. However this idea of somebody's whole life being based on their mobile is laughable.

MadMadaMim · 18/03/2024 17:28

I only take cards if I'm doing a big shop or I'm going more than 30 mins drive from home, just in case.. Otherwise it just seems unnecessary.

I always have £50 CASH in my purse and at least £10 change in my car.

Your phone is literally a tracker, even when you turn it off it is listening to conversations etc. I have to use the stupid thing for work and sat nav and really don't like joining up all the apps together. I really do need to go back to using cash more. Easier to budget if you set yourself an actual cash limit too as paying with cards and phones sort of bypasses how much you're spending.

We'll all be sorry if they do phase out cash.....

No it's not. I've heard conspiracy nuts say the same and that it even listens to you when you remove the battery!! Some people don't engage their brains.

They don’t listen to your conversation. And yes there will be someone who says that they were talking to a friend about holidays in Turkey and then they had Facebook ads for holidays in Turkey, but it isn’t because your phone was listening to you.

It's so nice not to have to be bugged when you don't have your phone on you (literally). Not being tracked on everything you do. Sometimes it is great not to have a phone on you. Life before them functioned brilliantly :)

But you don't need to be bugged. Turn notifications off if they're annoying you!

I prefer to have mine with me in case something happens I would want to know about quickly. But we're all different!

Problem comes in emergency-type situations now that there are virtually no public phone boxes anymore. You end up reliant on passers by to help you. That's why a lot of school kids need mobiles especially if they make their own way to/from school. A few decades ago, you were never far from a public pay phone and even if you had no coins, you could do a reverse charge call. Phones are pretty much an essential part of life these days, however short the distance from home that you are.

Most of the phone boxes that were left were vandalised by morons. But there really should be some still about.

chaosmaker · 18/03/2024 16:53

NoWordForFluffy · 18/03/2024 12:50

I think some people find it inconceivable that others don't carry their phones around 24/7. If I'm in my local town why would I need my phone for anything? I just leave it at home.

What if somebody had a medical emergency you needed to be informed about? Surely that's the whole point of mobiles; to be contactable when out, just in case? 🤷‍♀️

I've always associated this kind of anti tech stance with a larger conspiracy view of the world

phoenixrosehere · 18/03/2024 16:29

All the Face IDs and Autopasswords in the world won't help you if the app logs you out after a set period and the app won't allow you to log in with Face ID.

You can log in by pin or type in the password.

phoenixrosehere · 18/03/2024 16:26

The problem with having everything in your phone is if you lose/break your phone you lose everything.

Not necessarily. I have an iPhone and my previous phones have been iPhones. I can go into my last iPhone and all my apps and info are saved in there even if I’ve moved to a newer iPhone. It may not have any recent apps depending on the last back-up, but I haven’t lost everything and my physical cards are still safe.

Your smug superiority is hilarious.

And yes, I do have Face ID on my phone.

What? I don’t know what phone or apps you are using but that simply isn’t the case on mine.

The problem with having everything in your phone is if you lose/break your phone you lose everything.

To such an extent it's slightly suspicious that manufacturers haven't found a way to make it seamless to move from one device to another.

Having had both Google and Samsungs cheery "transfer with ease" fuck up and leave me with hours of reauthorising apps and sites I'm very much unconvinced.

I'd say the opposite with Apple. I always used to have problems moving between phones when I had android, and to an extent, it put me off changing. However, my son had an Apple and literally just put them next to eachother and everything popped over with a few clicks and pointing the camera of one at the other. I couldn't believe how simple it was. I'm now a convert to Apple. Only last year, I had a battery issue and couldn't source someone to replace it at very short notice, it was old and I was planning to swap to a new one anyway, so I got a new one from Amazon, next day delivery, and did the "changeover" sat in the car in the Morrisons car park where I picked it up from an Amazon locker. New phone was fully working within half an hour, all apps swapped over, all photos, etc. From memory, just had to put in passwords for a few apps, which took just a few minutes. Couldn't believe how easy and stress free it was. The following week, the battery on the old one was changed and I swapped my OH's older phone onto my old one - again, all done and dusted within half an hour.

SillyOldBucket · 18/03/2024 15:39

I wasn't berating anyone for being dependant on their phone. I do use it for online banking, Facebook, Amazon, photos etc and its great but I honestly sometimes feel like lobbing the phone under a truck when its constantly vibrating, flashing or pinging. I find it quite liberating to have a break from it and leave it at home sometimes.

That’s absolutely fine, you’re not obligated to have a phone or to use one. That particular post was in response to the person who seemed to think they had a right or reason to “convince younger people” not to use their phones. Which is ridiculous.
