People who don’t carry their bank cards with them

I was in Sainsbury’s this morning and systems are down. No contactless, chip n pin taking ages to go through. Unable to buy gift cards, mobile top up vouchers.

Systems going down like this happen not very often but when they do it’s awful.

On the self scan next to me a woman screamed at the manager on why she can’t pay on her mobile.

Why do many people don’t carry their bank cards anymore? The cards don’t weigh much. Plus if the contactless payment system goes down, hopefully their card will go through via chip n pin. Also they won’t look like idiots either. No sympathy for these.

Regarding contactless payments- sometimes your bank, NOT the retailer etc asks you to do a CnP payment as part of security. “I dunno my PIN”. You can change your PIN to any number you want (not 1234, 1111) at any ATM under PIN services.

Most people’s lives are kept in their phone these days, not just “young people”. Most of the older generation are on Facebook now to keep in touch, do online banking, purchase on Amazon, take precious photos etc.

Why do some of the “old people” feel the need to convince said “young people” that they shouldn’t be taking advantage of modern technology if they find it convenient? (Which let’s face it, is the whole point of it!)

This whole thread is based around luddites who won’t move with the times feeling they are somehow superior despite living in the past, telling people how they should or shouldn’t live their lives. It’s thoroughly bizarre. None of the tech users feel the need to berate anyone for making different choices or not moving with the times. If others want to - let them!

I wasn't berating anyone for being dependant on their phone. I do use it for online banking, Facebook, Amazon, photos etc and its great but I honestly sometimes feel like lobbing the phone under a truck when its constantly vibrating, flashing or pinging. I find it quite liberating to have a break from it and leave it at home sometimes.

The problem with having everything in your phone is if you lose/break your phone you lose everything.

To such an extent it's slightly suspicious that manufacturers haven't found a way to make it seamless to move from one device to another.

Having had both Google and Samsungs cheery "transfer with ease" fuck up and leave me with hours of reauthorising apps and sites I'm very much unconvinced.

That is the problem with Android phones, sadly nothing is ever seamless. I’ve never had a problem transferring from one iPhone to another, it always just works.

Whereas not just insulting people who have different preferences to you, but actually claiming to know what they think and how they feel is such delightful behaviour @ZetuianRose and @taxguru Hmm

That’s the thing, prior to this thread I had not a care in the world how anyone paid for their shopping. I STILL don’t. Entirely up to you/them.

However, an entire thread around bashing people for embracing a technology that you choose not to shows a condescending superiority complex. My posts in this thread have been purely dispelling the myths and outright false assumptions of those who are doing so. I still have no interest in how you pay for your shopping, nor would I tell you to change. But don’t have a go at those of us who use phones, citing absolute nonsense as a “reason”.

Reallybadidea · 16/03/2024 14:29

Yeah, me too. I don't need to carry anything extra because they're in my phone case (between the plastic cover and the back of the phone) but I always have a way of paying in an emergency

See I don't keep my card in my phone cover simply because I lose or have phone stolen the card is also gone

I agree. There's a weird kind of virtue signalling/inverse snobbery going on about all the luddites who "could" have embraced tech years ago, but refused to do so, convincing themselves they're somehow superior for holding onto to antiquated working methods, and now going crying because they're being left behind and whinging about how life is so hard these days because everything is on the internet. They were basically living in caves for the last few decades whilst everyone else was getting used to tech, and keeping up with the changes. The only ones I feel sorry for are the 90+ group who were coming to the end of their working lives as tech was really taking off (internet, phone banking, card payments, etc) - anyone younger than that had ample time to embrace tech and should have realised it was the future - if they'd kept up with it over the years, they'd not be struggling so much today! After all, lots of "oldies" have embraced the internet, online banking, etc., and they've done that by "baby steps" along the way, getting used to new tech, keeping up with changes etc. I have little sympathy for the "we've always done it this way" brigade!

It never hurts to have a card as back up. The problem with having everything in your phone is if you lose/break your phone you lose everything. I'm not really on anyone's side on this, all I know is that having a card as back up works well for me, but then most people probably lose their phone less then I do, so each to their own. I have to say Mumsnet does get hilariously spicy on things that just come down to personal preference. People should just do what works for them - there's no need for us to chew each other out.

PBJsandwich123 · 18/03/2024 14:48

True - at least with card if all else fails you can nip round to an atm and withdraw cash. It's sort of classless for that lady to be shouting at a store employee because she only has her phone - it's not the employees fault and there is probably little that they can actually do to change it, and more than that they are probably on minimum or living wage so shouldn't have to deal with people's gripes with the system that only the head office can do anything about. Hearing stories like that reminds me of my customer facing days - strangely I don't miss them one bit

RaraRachael · 18/03/2024 14:29

Shock horror. I've never used a sat nav or driven on a motorway.

Each to their own

My daughter has apple pay but she also takes her cards when she goes out as they are in her purse, so she has cash as well.

She understands that if she can't use one thing, she can use another. It's common sense when you live in a rural area and have to travel to go shopping.

Nobody should be criticizing or insulting anyone on here for their choices. It's just that , a choice of what you personally want to carry. If you only want to carry a phone then you must also understand that there may be times when you can't use it.

However I've found you can't convince younger people - according to them phones are their entire life and can't understand how anybody can think otherwise.

60 next year and never take a bag. Usually have phone, bank card, door key, emergency tenner and a tissue in my pockets.

RedPony1 · 18/03/2024 13:45

WhatHoJeeves · 18/03/2024 12:44

I'm guessing all of the people travelling light with no bag are young and healthy? I would so love to walk around free of a bag but I have awful migraines and joint problems since menopause, plus hay fever, so I always have to carry a pharmacy and tissues.

Then I have a foldy bag, a card holder (I'm old school), a brush for my tangly hair ... I've weeded out rubbish from the bag and reduced it's size but I would feel panicky without it.

I'd love to be the free-and-easy type, not the sorted-for-every-occasion type!

i keep a pharmacy, make up, hair brush etc in my car. i dont go anywhere far away from my car.

i never take a bag anywhere and havent for about 5 years. i dont like those phone cases you can put cards in so just pay on my phone/watch. love only needing to remember my phone and keys!

Sartre · 18/03/2024 13:27

I haven’t carried a card since Apple Pay was invented years ago, I don’t use cash ever either. I don’t own or want to own a purse so cards would just go missing whereas my phone is highly unlikely to go missing, it’s just more convenient.

SillyOldBucket · 18/03/2024 12:57

I wouldnt dream of leaving the house without my bank card whereas I am much more likely to leave my phone at home for short trips to the shops on foot. Its nice not to have to be constantly at the beck and call of WhatsApp, messages, Snapchat etc. It's also bulkier than my bank card so more of a nuisance to carry around.

Me too

katseyes7 · 18/03/2024 13:11

God knows why it takes longer but it certainly does for some people. They fumble around with their phone finding their Clubcard then fiddle some more to pay
Blossomtoes This. I get people at my till who have stood behind two or three other customers, then when l ask for their loyalty card they mutter "Somewhere...." then start searching their phone or pockets for it. Then they can't get logged in, or it's logged them out.
Then, of course, it's my fault.....

@aodirjjd those scenarios have very rarely happened to me compared with people faffing about with their phones. When they have, it's been an elderly person so I wouldn't get stressed about that.

I think some people find it inconceivable that others don't carry their phones around 24/7. If I'm in my local town why would I need my phone for anything? I just leave it at home.

Problem comes in emergency-type situations now that there are virtually no public phone boxes anymore. You end up reliant on passers by to help you. That's why a lot of school kids need mobiles especially if they make their own way to/from school. A few decades ago, you were never far from a public pay phone and even if you had no coins, you could do a reverse charge call. Phones are pretty much an essential part of life these days, however short the distance from home that you are.

I grew up with no mobile phones so have never been reliant on it. I've never used Sat Nav either so I am a dinosaur and happy too.
@NoWordForFluffy the medical emergency would wait till I got home sams as it would have done before mobiles.

If you have the app, surely you add the coupons to your account BEFORE you go to shop / or BEFORE you join the queue rather than hold it up at the actual checkout itself and discover you need to find the coupons and login? At least that’s what I do with M&S / Boots / Tesco etc?

And then you can use the wallet when you get to the checkout? To be fair I use Face ID or autopasswords so I don’t actually ever have to type in login details to get into apps and it takes 2 seconds so I have no idea what the fuss is all about if even you did have to log in, but I appreciate not everyone actually knows how to make the most of their phones.

Your smug superiority is hilarious.

All the Face IDs and Autopasswords in the world won't help you if the app logs you out after a set period and the app won't allow you to log in with Face ID.

And yes, I do have Face ID on my phone.

@RaraRachael So you only ever use your phone when you leave your town?

If not, then the reasons why you bring it with you when you’re in your town, are typically the reasons why other people bring theirs.

What if somebody had a medical emergency you needed to be informed about? Surely that's the whole point of mobiles; to be contactable when out, just in case? 🤷‍♀️

the funny thing is it only seems to be older women that need handbags when they are out and about not older men. I’m not discounting that you need it but I don’t think it’s a young vs old thing. Although obviously as a general trend younger people are more comfortable using phones etc.
