Moved house and feel HORRENDOUS

Springisnear4 · 10/03/2024 20:03

Just moved house and have spent the last hour just crying on my own. I don't know what's wrong with me. I like the house but I'm already thinking of when I can sell it.

It's completely normal to feel like that. Movinv house is one of the most stressful times forcanyone, even if theyve been looking forward to it for aaaaaages. Sometimes I still wish I was living in my old house, normally when dp and I have had a rubbish time. I've started saying hello to this house every time I return and now I've started feeling more at home. Maybe that will work for you?

MiniPumpkin · 10/03/2024 22:08

I remember when I moved into my house I was quite put off by the smell of the house. Every day I could smell it, nothing bad, just unfamiliar but it really made me feel I made a mistake. Sounds bizzare but safe to say it smells like home now lol

What everyone else has said! It’s such a stressful process and such a huge decision/purchase, after the adrenaline of moving is gone it’s totally normal to feel that way.

Plus empty houses feel so cold, dreary and unloved. Once you’ve unpacked and given it some love it will feel very different.

elm26 · 10/03/2024 21:31

I'm the same and need to do it again this week (3rd move in 2 years) with a 9 month old in tow.

Every house I've moved to, I've cried and felt awful for a good 3/4 weeks. I get a homesick pining feeling. Thank god this is somewhere we are settling for a few years before buying.

You'll love it soon OP, chin up. I completely understand how you feel. X

NeedToChangeName · 10/03/2024 21:31

Perhaps you could focus on getting one room how you like it. And buy a few plants for the garden

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 10/03/2024 21:28

I was the same. I had to hand over keys and wait for money to be wired to get keys for new house in one day. We had to clear out everything and lock the door having never been in our new house as it was a new build. It was unbelievably stressful and so emotional. 3 young kids. We had no floors or blinds or curtains and nothing worked. We had to shower in a local swimming pool for the first week. We had to tape black plastic bags to the windows to stop kids waking at 5am in July. It was awful! For months i would mentally walk through the rooms in my old home, I literally ached for it. But we have the most fabulous house now and it was worth all the stress.

Springisnear4 · 10/03/2024 21:25

Thanks everyone. I've found my phone charger and had a shower and calmed down a bit. Just need to give it time. I feel reassured that this is normal and I'm not a complete weirdo for spending all my money on a house and not just feeling really happy

OP I hear you and it's very normal. We moved 3 months ago after 10 years in our old house and I've autopiloted back to the old estate on more occasions than I've admitted IRL 🫣 💖

That made me lol.

When I moved from a rented flat and into my first house, I ran for a bus and was delighted to catch it.

Then I had to get off at the next stop, because that bus went to my old flat and my new house was on a completely different bus route.

Ilovegoldies · 10/03/2024 21:20

I bought my first home at the grand age of 50. I didn't feel any stress or regret until 3 weeks later I went back to my old neighbourhood and suddenly sobbed like a baby because I didn't live there any more.

The next few weeks was discovering dodgy wiring, plumbing and a ratty attic which brought more upset.
Four months on and I'm in absolute heaven. It finally feels like home and I don't give my old life second thought. Deep breaths. You'll be fine.

I loved my house when I viewed it and drove passed it every day like a stalker until moving in day.

that night I remember trying to sleep on a mattress on the floor while crying because all that joy evaporated. The house smelled a little of damp - everything. Was older and smaller than I remembered. An aggressive neighbour gave me a lecture about cutting down a tree that I love in my mature back garden.

it took about three months until I committed to staying and an mother 18 months to do all the work it needed (about £75k more than I budgeted for🫣).

but I love it now! It’s finally home.

Twiglets1 · 10/03/2024 20:54

It's normal to feel overwhelmed at first.

Candleabra · 10/03/2024 20:53

It’s normal.
It’s the change and the stress making you feel like this, not the house.
Give it time. It helps to remember the reasons you wanted to move.

Natureswimnow · 10/03/2024 20:52

I felt like this. It felt big, cold and empty like I was in someone else’s house. Getting a few familiar bits out definitely helped, it was so much worse when it was dark, the morning brought some relief.

Curiosity101 · 10/03/2024 20:51

I cried for around 3 weeks or so when we moved. I wanted to move... I chose to move... It was a positive move... Still cried for 3 weeks. Takes me ages to settle anywhere new, even going on holiday.

Don't be surprised if it takes you a little while to sleep properly too.

Inyourwildestdreams · 10/03/2024 20:50

@Springisnear4 I agree with the others - it’s a big change and often feels really unsettling at the start!

I was the exact same when we last moved too. It helped me to list the reasons why we made the move 😊 What made you move? 😊

Pinkypup · 10/03/2024 20:50

I haven’t ever felt like this, but can imagine and hope you feel at home soon. Once all your crap is out and about you’ll feel better I’m sure.

Springisnear4 · 10/03/2024 20:46

I was at my old place 3 years too @Cbljgdpk

It really took me a while to settle in when I moved after spending 3 years in my previous place; it took time but I loved the new place after a few weeks and kept reminding myself why I’d moved and what I liked about the new place

I need to give myself time. Having moved from a place that had a fair few problems into a house I loved, I just expected to feel relieved and happy but I feel the opposite right now unfortunately.

Ive been at our new place for 5 months and I still pang for our old home!! It really has been the most stressful thing I’ve ever been through this moving house malarkey! And I’ve had all sorts happen in my life. It was totally unexpected and knocked me for 6.

In my head I’m giving it 1-2 years and if I still feel like shit we’re going to have to move on 😵‍💫

Tiptoptum · 10/03/2024 20:39

This was me almost a year ago (different name)
I sunk my divorce money into a house that I loved, until I owned it and set foot in it! Once their stuff was gone I hated it. I wanted to move and I thought wistfully of the rented house, with damp, I had left behind (which my youngest also kept asking to return to)

So much ch was riding on the house and it stood for so many things for me, that I think it was just all too much when I got it.

Fast forward a year and although there are bits of it that aren’t ideal that I didn’t fully notice when viewing, we love the place, I’ve decorated and made it mine, because I think at the time it felt like “theirs” and it all felt a bit weird.

Loopytiles · 10/03/2024 20:36

Yea, it’ll be OK! Stressful time.

I have my flat for one more week, it's empty but I feel the urge to go back there tonight even though there's not even a bed there to sleep in.

So cute. You’ll be ok ❤️

KaftasCastle · 10/03/2024 20:34

I felt like this, it lasted a full year. I cried every day for 6 weeks, and I'm not an emotional person.

Now I feel incredibly lucky and I love the new house.

Change is hard, even when it's wanted!
