To HATE my dog

Blossomo · 04/03/2024 16:11

We have a 7 year old pug who literally drives me nuts, he comes upstairs whilst we are out pisses on the banister. I am so sick of cleaning/re-painting. We have quite a big garden and all he does is chase passers by barking constantly. I know a dog is for life and everything but since having kids I really do not have the time and every time I look at him he just annoys me. It is really unfair to him as he could be with a family who love him, dont get me wrong, the kids LOVE him so I could not get rid but he just really gets on my nerves. I used to love dogs, we got a cat a year or so ago and he is amazing!

@MadamVastra

I said someone would happily adopt him :)
( not suggesting you are a little old lady tho )

I now have 3 puggies as a result of people like the OP
ok No 1 & 2 are pug x shih tzu No 3 is the Daddy pug whom I adopted about a year later.

Littlepixie75 · 04/03/2024 17:15

As someone has just said above - is this perhaps a reaction to the cat? Do male dogs wee on things in a territorial way? Male cats certainly do, neutered or not.

Goldenbrowntexturelikesun · 04/03/2024 17:15

To say you hate your dog is a bit harsh just because he urinates in the house.

I’ve had 4 dogs and 4 cats and currently have a very challenging rescue.

They have all shat, pissed, thrown up and brought in all kind of disgusting things into the house. I have stairgates all over my house, not a pretty sight but it saves a lot of cleaning up.

Did you not give any consideration into what dog ownership is actually like before you got him?

And why did you not get him neutered? It’s one of the first things we as dog owners should do? If you had no idea doing this would help with behaviour then you have very little knowledge of dog ownership.

It’s really not fair that you “HATE” your dog, none of this is his fault poor thing.

The fact that I have a challenging rescue dog (and revue centres are full of damaged dogs) is because of people continually purchasing cute puppies yet having zero idea how keep a dog.

WiddlinDiddlin · 04/03/2024 17:15

Why aren't you managing him sensibly?

If he goes and pisses upstairs when you're out theres a good chance he is unhappy being left (scent marking when alone suggests a degree of anxiety, he's scent marking to make himself feel more secure).

I actually would not neuter immediately, if he is scent marking due to anxiety/stress then removing testosterone is likely to cause a sudden drop in confidence which could increase the scent marking.

I would confine to a pen when you're out - check he is actually ok being left via camera and test absences where you're not really gone, you are watching the camera from the garden or just down the street. If he IS ok, he will relax, sprawl out, play with toys, work on a filled kong or chew. If he is not then he's not going to do those things he's more likely to scrabble, dig, climb out, bark, howl, wee/poo.

Asides from pissing when you're out, what else is he doing that you hate - what does he do all day?

You say he has a walk and he's fed - wheres the training, enrichment, games, activities. Training isn't something you do for a bit when they're young then stop... it's something you do throughout the day, every day, for life!

GoodOldEmmaNess · 04/03/2024 17:13

@Blossomo, if he has only just started weeing in the house there might be a health problem .Eg diabetes can contribute to this I think?

Not sure why you are getting so much stick for not neutering him. My dog isn't neutered and doesn't wee in the house, and it sounds like yours didn't until recently.

I would get him looked at by a vet just to rule out physical problems. Good luck.

RatatouillePie · 04/03/2024 17:12
  1. get him neutered
  2. get stairgates on the bottom of the stairs, or leave the dog in the kitchen when you're out.
Laurama91 · 04/03/2024 17:11

When did it start? Can you pin point something that changed? Getting the cat maybe?

MadamVastra · 04/03/2024 17:11

ah come on @PurpleChrayn i bet you also have your moments

PieonaBarm · 04/03/2024 17:10

Get him castrated. My MIL dog used to do this until she finally relented and got him done and then it stopped.

I don't share your opinion but it is absolutely fair enough if you never intend to own a dog. This woman has got one which she deliberately purchased. Nobody held a gun to her head and (I presume) she gave it some adult thought processes before the decision.

MadamVastra · 04/03/2024 17:09

I have an old pug and when she was younger was quite demanding and bossy so you do need a firmer approach with them! I would say they are high maintenance. (Like me 😂)

one thing though is they are easy to train if you are CONSISTENT. Otherwise they will take the piss. I was always training her it's good for you and them - no one wants an annoying barking dog. (Nickname Barkso) plus the dog likes boundaries and consistency. They don't have to make their own rules which is stressful. You can turn this around. If not I will have him 😂

The cat isn't pissing in the house tho is it? 🙄

What a load of rubbish! he is well looked after! walked everyday, well fed. I am just fed up of the pissing!

Please, walking and feeding a dog is not a reason to pat yourself in the back, it's the bare minimum you should be doing.

You did not investigate the pro and cons of neutering otherwise you would have understood your dog's behaviour and now he has a problem, that you are responsible for causing, you hate him.

You have let him down but don't realise it just because you walk and feed him. Letting him down is negligent.

takemeawayagain · 04/03/2024 17:05

You can't just leave the dog in the garden because it's getting on your nerves, of course it's going to protect it's turf and chase off the passers by. It needs to be taken for a walk a couple of times a day not just left to amuse itself in the garden. Dogs are pack animals and it would rather be with you in the house then just left in the garden.
You need to rehome him though as you clearly don't like him, he deserves an owner that has the time for him and loves him. Buying a gate and getting him neutered are unlikely to completely change your opinion of him because he will still need your time and attention.

Whereabouts in the country do you live ?

Please rehome him, either thru Pug rescue or Many Tears in Wales - there are plenty of people ( little old ladies :) who would love to adopt your pug - esp as he is used to being an only dog ( only dogs from homes are very sought after by people looking to adopt )

Blossomo · 04/03/2024 17:02

FOJN · 04/03/2024 17:00

Why didn't you neuter when your dog was younger? You could do it now but it may not change behaviour that is already established.

You could also hand him into a rescue but a 7 year old pug may not be rehomed easily, especially one with a behavioural problem. Approx 20,000 dogs a year are put to sleep in rehoming centres in the UK.

I'm afraid you have badly let your dog down and I do not think you should ever get another pet without doing a lot of research first.

Sorry but negligent or lazy dogs owners make me angry.

Unhelpful and rude, you know nothing about me

Well we know you bought a dog of a difficult breed, didn’t get him neutered, didn’t understand the consequences of not getting him neutered, haven’t addressed his behaviours which are signs of stress, and say you hate him. So you certainly have told us quite a bit about yourself.

You could address his behaviour by working on it with the help of a behaviourist. But that isn’t looking promising if you hate him. He knows your attitude to him has changed.

StressDoesNotAgreeWithMe · 04/03/2024 16:59

I get it, my dog went through a phase of going in the house. It really affected the way I felt about him. He used to have free roam in the house which was part of the problem as now he has restricted access he has completely stopped ( unless by chance he gets in one of the kids rooms unnoticed ect he will make a mess )

I bought a giant crate, its huge, could fit 2 or 3 of him in there. A really comfy bed and now if he cant be in the same room as me ( bedtime, if I pop out, I'm at home all day everyday ) then he goes in his crate. He does not have accidents in his crate. I also have a baby gate at the bottom.of the stairs
