To cancel the wedding?

We are supposed to get married in early June. The wedding is in a registry office in the city we live in but I know family who live about an hour away have booked hotels/Airbnbs in the city.

I found out yesterday I’m pregnant, which is lovely but very unexpected. There’s no question about whether to keep the baby but we are debating cancelling the wedding.

I’d be about 17 weeks pregnant by the time the big day game around. So we wouldn’t tell anyone the reason why we’re cancelling the day. I’m only about 3 or 4 weeks pregnant at the moment so well aware that anything could happen with the pregnancy.

Is it massively unreasonable and unfair to those who have already paid for accommodation?

I LOVE a party, but honestly barely drank at my own wedding! Too much going on, too much to do, exhausting in a really good way… so if it’s the lack of ‘partying’ that’s putting you off I would say it’s a very different experience to being a wedding guest where often a mixture of boredom and over excitement( and flowing booze) means you get wasted…

Congratulations! I was in just this position 20+ years ago. It had taken us ages to find a date that worked for family members, bridesmaids and witnesses (August wedding) and then the pregnancy discovery. The thought of trawling for another date was too tedious to contemplate. We had a wonderful day, on the date originally planned. My baby bump was small but definitely present. Even now, I love talking to our daughter about the wedding and how she was there with us. I do hope you go ahead and have a similarly happy experience.

Pregnant brides look absolutely stunning!

I definitely wouldn’t cancel unless you are concerned it will coincide with your due date.

PoochiesPinkEars · 04/03/2024 12:34

Awwww, those are understandable thoughts op.
But honestly, under the circumstances your wedding date is (likely) peak perfection, second trimester is the best phase of pregnancy for most, still comfy, likely hardly showing, and any nausea probably gone/vastly reduced.

If you cancel it could possibly be years before you are able to revisit the idea (hard to imagine but trust us).

Now you can have fun planning keeping the secret and building the announcement into your special day - maybe in the speeches... There won't be a dry eye in the house! 😍

Aintbaint · 04/03/2024 12:34

It’ll be different to what you thought but if anything you should try to get married ASAP! You’ll be more financially and legally secure.

Thanks all for your comments.

There were a couple of reasons for contemplating cancelling - I was worried about sickness/feeling crap and perhaps trivially, was worried I wasn’t going to have the day I’d planned for/envisioned.

Appreciate all the responses. Will get dress shopping for a bigger dress and plough on.

At 17 weeks with a first pregnancy you probably won't even need a larger dress. Just don't get one with a really tight waistband/corset.

Don't worry about having a visible bump. I bet the guests have guessed you aren't a virgin....

😏😆

Everythinggreen · 04/03/2024 12:27

Aw no don't cancel if you really don't have to, you can still have a lovely day. It happened to a friend of mine, they were in the process of planning a big wedding and she found out she was pregnant and decided to scale it right back, she got herself a new dress she was more comfortable in and they had a lovely little wedding :)

Starzinsky · 04/03/2024 12:27

Totally confused why you would cancel. Not sure your guests would understand without a better explanation.

Viviennemary · 04/03/2024 12:20

If you cancel it would be really letting your guests down. Just get married. Or else you will have to reimburse all your guests for expenses incurred.

FirstTimeMum897 · 04/03/2024 12:18

Complications aside, for which you cannot plan, you should be feeling great at 17 weeks and not showing that much. You'll have a very small bump but you won't be huge or uncomfortable.

Getupat8amnow · 04/03/2024 12:16

You and your child are much more financially protected when you are married. It’s not romantic but for that reason alone I would go ahead with the wedding. Read the thread about the sister who is supporting her sister who was with a man for twenty plus years, four children and she sold her flat. Her man has got someone else and her life and financial stability are in absolute ruins. Never have children unless you are married.

mitogoshi · 04/03/2024 12:16

Go ahead, perhaps plan less than you otherwise would. John Lewis have a good selection of maternity wedding dresses. You can always have a ceremony at a later date if you want more bells and whistles

Autienotnautie · 04/03/2024 12:16

If people have committed I'd probably go ahead. It will still be an amazing day

Emotionalsupportviper · 04/03/2024 12:15

Whattobakeiwonder · 04/03/2024 06:36

I'm not sure exactly why you want to cancel? You want to be married. You're going to have a child together. Marriage will bring you legal and financial protection, particularly for the period you're at home with your child.

All of the above.

And it won't leave your relatives out of pocket.

BMW6 · 04/03/2024 11:57

Glad to read that you're going ahead with the wedding.

Hope you have a great wedding but more importantly a happy marriage.

Luckyduc · 04/03/2024 11:55

You could announce your pregnancy on tour wedding day at the speech.

crockofshite · 04/03/2024 11:54

go ahead with the reg office wedding because the legals need to be done, and once the baby arrives arrange a big party and invite everyone to celebrate both events (for when baby is about 6-9 months).

PinkIcedCream · 04/03/2024 11:50

Congratulations OP! 💍

Generally the nausea that you get in the early weeks should have gone by week 12 and it’s more likely you’ll be feeling really well by 17 weeks. Also, your bump is unlikely to be noticeable unless you’re expecting twins?

You can wear most dress styles but maybe avoid any that are very fitted on the waist.

YourWinter · 04/03/2024 11:44

Don’t cancel, you won’t be huge by then, you may not even show (I was 16 1/2 weeks and still wasn’t showing with my second). Better to marry before baby arrives than to try to factor it in later with a child in tow. I hope you enjoy yourself and good luck!

Mnk711 · 04/03/2024 11:42

Crack on and get married. You wont have time or money once baby arrives! You will have an amazing day no matter what, and u likely to have sickness still at that stage of pregnancy unless you have HG which is fairly rare.

lambhotpot · 04/03/2024 11:40

My aunt fell in labour 3 hours after she said i do.
She had a lovely little boy on her wedding day arrived a week early.
She told everyone to stay and have a good time at the party.
We had a surprise wedding party 3 months later for her and her husband.
Shes the sweetest person ever.

AliceAforethought · 04/03/2024 11:33

The nausea, sickness and early stage tiredness has usually worn off by the stage you'll be at. You won't be huge; probably not showing at all.

You'll possibly regret it if you don't do it now because when you have a child or children it takes far longer to get round to things; there are always lots of calls on your time and money.

All that said, don't "plough in" just because MN has told you to!

Pipsquiggle · 04/03/2024 11:27

I would get married - there will never be a 'perfect' time and you will have even less time once the baby is here. Congratulations

We went to a wedding a few years ago - during the speeches, the groom shared the beautiful news they were expecting. Huge cheers from the guests and it was just a lovely way to share their news and still makes me smile now 😀

How adorable. A double special memory of the day. I think it's really special being pregnant on your wedding day.
