That my sister was out of order and should have apologised?

I'm at my mums for Sunday lunch and sister is here with niece who is 6. My sister has let her bring her roller skates and use them in the kitchen whilst dinner is cooking and she has crashed into the dinner table and knocked a whole up of fizzy drink all over me. I now have to borrow my mums clothes or sit and eat my dinner in soaking wet clothes. She hasn't even apologised. I think she's shows a lack of respect for me or my mums home. My mum has glared at me as if to say shut up and don't say anything.

Common sense should tell both your Mum and sister that roller skates shouldn't be used inside, especially in the kitchen, when food is cooking. If your niece has crashed into the stove, and knocked a pan of hot water off, onto herself, all hell would have broken loose, and your sister probably would have blamed your Mum for allowing it!! As for knocking a jug of fizzy drink over you, yes, your niece should have apologised but at 6, it's not something she would immediately think to do, without your sister prompting her to do so. Unfortunately, this took place at your Mum's, it's her home and in all honesty, her call to lay down the boundaries and rules. If she's not willing then, there's little you can do.

Choked on my drink laughing at that

Yup, do this next time you see her, shake it first though 😂

Dweetfidilove · 03/03/2024 20:43

I keep hearing how brilliant today’s children are, so Who are these six year olds who don’t understand respect?

You should have told her off, or accidentally spill some on her too.

Your mother sounds terrified of your sister, who sounds wholly incompetent.

PremiumRaa · 03/03/2024 20:35

Roller skating indoors is ridiculous but I wouldn't be annoyed at the six year old - plus it's not your home you're just a guest the same as your sister. Just laugh it off.

BobbyBiscuits · 03/03/2024 20:30

If you have any say then obviously ban rollerskates from indoors. But if it's your mum's house and she doesn't care then tell your niece to apologise and help you put the clothes in the wash and dry. Too late now but after the event it feels like you lost the opportunity to teach the kid about if you make mess, you clean. If you break it, you replace it. Her mum is a terrible example clearly.
You should not let them in your own house if they won't behave correctly.

You sound very young are you jealous of your niece ?

No she sounds justifiably pissed off that her niece js allowed to do run riot in someone else's house.
It's not funny.
What if the kid had knocked into a pan if hot gravy. I'm guessing the, idiots wouldn't find it so funny then.

Catza · 03/03/2024 19:58

I cannot imagine being so mad at a child that I needed to immediately vent to strangers AND demand an apology from a parent. This is all a whole load of nothing. Drenched in a fizzy drink, really? Did you have a whole barrel of it on the table?

ToWhitToWhoo · 03/03/2024 19:09

I think that your niece should not be allowed to roller skate in the kitchen while cooking is taking place. It was an accident waiting to happen; and it could have been a much worse one. And it would be more polite if they apologized. However, I don't think you should be thinking of it in terms of lack of respect for you. It's silly and potentially dangerous behaviour, but not a personal slight.

drumbeats · 03/03/2024 16:48

What's he get you also complain that young people have no respect these days when something untoward happens to you.

Nah, I doubt I'd sit there in drenched in soaking wet clothes 😂

But then again, I wouldn't start a thread on an internet forum about a 6 year old accidentally spilling a drink on me.

I'd probably tell my sister she was a divvy for bringing roller skates for her daughter and my mum wouldn't be so feeble as to let a 6 year old wear roller skates in a kitchen cooking hot food, but I doubt this scenario would make me come out thinking that young people just don't have any respect these days.

Attackofthekillereggs · 03/03/2024 18:33

@diddl I don't thank many any of the people on that thread did either!

diddl · 03/03/2024 18:19

people claiming to have designed their kitchens specifically to allow for roller skating!?

Wow!

Well I've never owned a kitchen big enough so it wouldn't occur to me.

Attackofthekillereggs · 03/03/2024 18:12

Why would it occur to anyone to do this?

@diddl

There was a fairly recent thread about kitchen design and there were a surprising number of posts from people claiming to have designed their kitchens specifically to allow for roller skating!?

Clearly OP's mum was not on that thread :-)

diddl · 03/03/2024 18:02

My sister has let her bring her roller skates and use them in the kitchen

Why would it occur to anyone to do this?

Why do your Mum & sister think it's OK?

Is your Mum scared to say no to your sister?

Weird!

LakeTiticaca · 03/03/2024 17:55

It was an accident and yes there probably should have been an apology. However, if this happened to my sister I would be pissing myself laughing

Sorry 🤣🤣🤣

lambhotpot · 03/03/2024 17:27

Just be thankful shes not your kid you can walk away from it.

Divastrout · 03/03/2024 17:10

Dutchairfryer · 03/03/2024 15:14

Just tip some fizzy on the kid and move on

This😂

SweetFemaleAttitude · 03/03/2024 15:27

It was a cup of pop FFS. You can't be sitting there in 'soaking wet clothes' or as a pp dramatically put it. 'drenched' 😂😂

Has your mum got a hairdryer? Go and dry it off.

Niece should have apologised, but it's not a big deal is it really 🙄.

What's he get you also complain that young people have no respect these days when something untoward happens to you.

JJathome · 03/03/2024 15:25

I think she's shows a lack of respect for me or my mums home

sorry just reread, surely you don’t mean the 6 year old? Your own niece?

Um yeah. 6 year olds should understand to apologise and if they don't it's because their parents have not taught them. It shows a complete lack of respect from both the child and the mother.

It wasn't intentional but it was careless and resulted in something unpleasant. Of course there should be an immediate apology from niece and the child's mother.

ginasevern · 03/03/2024 16:36

Next time the niece might get some scolding hot food all over her. Perhaps your sister will then see the benefits of not rolling skating in the kitchen.

ChaToilLeam · 03/03/2024 16:35

Your sister is an idiot and the child will turn out a brat if this continues. I’d have said something whether others liked it or not. It’s annoying enough to be soaked but there’s potential for even worse accidents in a kitchen.

GreyWednesday · 03/03/2024 16:30

JJathome · 03/03/2024 16:10

How old are you op? I think you sound very young, do you actually live at your mums?

I’m not very young and I’d be pissed off too if I got fizzy drink all over me because a child was roller skating in the house and then nobody bothered to even apologise.

Roller in the house (especially in the kitchen) is a bad idea. If you spill something on someone then you apologise. It’s really quite simple IMO 🤷🏻‍♀️

YeahIsaidit · 03/03/2024 16:28

Mountainpika · 03/03/2024 16:08

Was it a fizzy drink?

(Well someone had to ask.)

Yes fizzy pineapple haha

iwafs · 03/03/2024 16:25

Niece is only 6. If not properly parented, this is what will happen. Ridiculous to roller skate in a room where boiling water/hot baking trays is going on. Sister seems like she isn't looking after niece properly. Also disgraceful of your sister not to apologise. Your mum is probably just trying not to piss off your sister as then she'll see her granddaughter less.

Put your clothes in your mum's washing machine and decline the next invitation.

Bestdressed · 03/03/2024 16:24

Attackofthekillereggs · 03/03/2024 16:21

I now have to borrow my mums clothes or sit and eat my dinner in soaking wet clothes.

I did go back and read it again. OP hasn't clarified which choice she made.

Sounds to me she borrowed her mum’s clothes
