Do you like watching other people having sex (on TV)?

I don't. Perhaps I'm old fashioned, but if I'm watching a movie or drama and the characters start having sex then, unless it's a key part of the plot (e.g.dialogue taking place during the action), I hit fast-forward and skip to the post-coital scene. I'm not a prude - I just find it uncomfortable/intrusive to watch other people having sex. Intimate scenes have their place in movies/dramas with an obviously sensual theme - each to their own. But if it's a movie/drama of any other genre, and the sex scene doesn't advance the plot in any way, why linger on it? Just me?

I meant

I don't need to see actual sex going on

BeauSignoles · 24/02/2024 10:13

I dislike it when it’s shoehorned into the plot almost dutifully, as if it’s what audiences expect. Especially in an action film - so unnecessary, I’d rather have another car chase.

and yy to the unrealistic three thrusts and she comes. Just don’t bother, thanks.

EverlastingStar · 24/02/2024 10:13

I really hate it so I just forward through it

I don't mind if they're just lying naked in bed that's perfectly fine but I need to see actual sex going on

Nofilteritwonthelp · 24/02/2024 10:13

I hate it, it's never relevant and it's usually only to show a naked woman. If I want to enjoy watching people having sex I can watch porn

IWantYourLaptop · 24/02/2024 10:12

I do this too.

Always fast forward. Just makes me cringe.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 24/02/2024 10:12

Not a lot. I'm not prudish at all, but oh my god, watching Normal People with 4 young adults at the start of the pandemic, on their recommendation. I think they found it worse, tbh!

Bridgerton S1 was hilarious. DH and I had a good giggle.

Otherwise, no. It's cringey.

Edit: Also laughed a lot at the sex scenes in Toast of London. We sometimes call eachother Toast and Mrs Purchase.

Edited

Matt Berry is hilarious, he had a really funny sex scene in Year of the Rabbit where he shouts 'I'm at the door girl!' that just about ended me.

I just find sex scenes very very dull. Get on with the story please.

It's bad in film/tv but even worse in books when it's all written out, complete with adjectives.

I think there is still the "Bad Sex Awards" which is designed to strongly discourage writers from producing poorly written pornography. I do not think there has ever been a winning entry not written by a man.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 24/02/2024 10:11

No. If I wanted to see people having sex I’d watch porn, and believe me I’m certainly no prude.

SunflowerSeeds123 · 24/02/2024 10:10

I'd rather directors left the sex part to the viewers imagination. We don't need to see it, really.

I like the pp's "no vest" moment. Definitely time to put the kettle on!

I'm no prude. I just find it quite boring and think it holds up the story telling.

Ohanotherflippingcold · 24/02/2024 10:09

It is there to titalate and to try and turn viewers on. There is as much gratuitous male nudity now as there is there is female, and sex scenes can be very women centric; I think directors are wise to the 'balance' now. Still seems to be very quick though, with neither person seemingly bothered about that..

I think a lot of it is completely unnecessary though, and it must be soul destroying for the actors.

Florence Pugh must flick through every script she gets now to find the bit where she gets her boobs out at least.

Actors say it is unerotic, but even in standard dramas you can see an actresses breasts being kissed, fondled etc..not much simulation going on.

I think the inclusion of intimacy coordinators now has changed things for the better behind the scenes. They make sure no unnecessary crew are on set, security is as it should be, and that the participants are 100% comfortable with what is being asked by the director.

Nope. Boring and utterly cringeworthy.

Sometimes. Bridgerton S1, yes. If I am watching with parents or child, definitely not!

This is the only example I could think of too😂

Hoglet70 · 24/02/2024 10:02

It's weird, I am so far from being a prude but I find sex scenes on TV beyond cringe. I'm not really sure what they do for the story.

NeedWineNow · 24/02/2024 10:00

DH and I often refer to it as 'no vest action' as in 'oh blimey, here we go again, no vest action and slurpy kissing, I'll go and put the kettle on, don't bother to pause'. We're both very relaxed about sex in life, just don't see the need to get it rammed (ooh er missus!) seemingly into every single film or tv programme nowadays.

By the way, in case anyone was wondering 'no vest' is an indirect reference to one of the Terry Pratchett books where one of the characters mentions a club where 'young ladies dance around with no vests on' 😁

TheQueenMakersDaughter · 24/02/2024 08:40

It's usually the least sexy thing I can think of, and I often wonder how awkward it must be for everyone involved, and how many people are standing around behind the camera waiting for their lunch breaks. And then interviews with actors about the TV show or film, I keep thinking I've seen your arse/tits/o-face and I really didn't need to. It's all very cringe.

You're right. And it's one reason why I find it difficult to take Meghan Markle seriously.

I've seen a few films where it wasn't just PIV.

The Sweetest Thing did go horribly wrong though 😁

I don't mind it as long as its just me and the Hysband watching.

Yes, Michael Douglas went down on Sharon Stone in Basic Instinct. But that was basically porn anyway.

HannaHat · 24/02/2024 09:54

Sex scenes make me cringe, even if I’m watching alone.

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 24/02/2024 09:21

Why are they so often standing up, with most of their clothes on, usually in the hall/ lobby, cos they are sooooo eager…..and then the next scene is them waking up together, in bed with their undies on?

Something doesn’t quite hang together there.

With the special L shaped sheets that cover him to the waist and her to her armpits, then she gets up and wraps herself in the bedclothes, like he hasn’t just seen her naked.

Ramalangadingdong · 24/02/2024 09:48

@JacquesHarlow you make quite a lot of assumptions in your post. Many people on here don’t like sex scenes precisely because they love sex and are comfortable with their sexuality. On film sex is often quite rough (their version of passion) and very quick. It is often very male-centric. You hardly ever see foreplay or authentic female pleasure or desire. It is usually a male take because they are the ones making the films.

MrsFionaCharnimg · 24/02/2024 09:48

missshilling · 24/02/2024 09:44

This is so typical of my conversations with other British women. It is why I’m sometimes made to feel a harlot or something for liking passionate sex in my 40s, or even having a sex life

Whereas all non-British women can’t help dropping their knickers at every opportunity and squeezing sex into every conversation.

Yep

Plus most people like good/passionate sex, pp, you're not the only woman who does 😑

We don't need to see other couples having pretend sex to like ourselves...

HeBeaverandSheBeaver · 24/02/2024 09:46

God normal people is so boring.

Far too much sex.

But I guess at least it was realistic sex

I do t mind stuff like sex in funny film. Like four weddings when the married
Couple are having a quicky in the room and Hugh gent is in the cupboard. That's more like normal life normal
Looking actors and is very funny.

Annoying, awkward, don't want to see it.

I do like a sensual scene that just hints at things and shows actual chemistry between characters.

Don’t want to see boobs, anyone's bum. If I want to be titillated, then I'd seek porn and do that. Last thing I saw was Oppenheimer. Way too much, and I nearly watched that with family.

Yet another reason why I watch the same selection of (usually animated) family movies!

Why on earth are they throwing numerous sex scenes into a film about an atomic bomb?
