I am surprised this isn't on here actually. It's been on the news for 2 days, and has just been discussed on Loose Women.

From the article...

A couple are waging war over a £1 million lotto scratchcard they ‘purchased together’ weeks before breaking up.

Michael Cartlidge, 39, and former partner Charlotte Cox, 37, purchased the
Lottery card together at a shop in Spalding, Lincs. But when Charlotte walked out on Michael a few weeks later, she was deemed to be the sole winner of the jackpot by lottery chiefs.

Michael admits that Charlotte both paid for and scratched the ticket. But he also claims that he was the one who suggested she buy the ticket and attempted to transfer her cash to cover the purchase while they were in the shop.
He says the mum-of-one initially agreed to split the cash, but later welched on the deal after breaking up with him a few weeks later and claimed she was the sole winner of the jackpot.

He said ‘£1million has never brought such misery.’

So, was the woman (Charlotte) wrong to have kept all the money to herself? They were not married, they didn't own any property together or have joint finances, and they'd only been together 3 months. Lottery chiefs said she is the sole owner of the money and does not have to share it.

YABU - she was WRONG to keep the money and should have split it with him. They were 'a couple.' He didn't pay for the ticket, but they got it at the same time.

YANBU - she was RIGHT to keep it - as she paid for the ticket herself, and didn't need to share it. They'd only been together 3 months, they weren't married, and they didn't have a house together or joint finances.

Money came from her account, not a joint account. They aren't married. It's her's.

Everything else is just irrelevant detail.

Katiesaidthat · 21/02/2024 13:50

So if I walked in with a friend and bought a ticket, because the friend was with me someone thinks she should get half? He was accompanying her, he didn´t purchase half, they weren´t married etc etc. Tough mate.

SirenSays · 21/02/2024 13:47

I thought this was going to be a sad story of someone swindling a long term loving partner. Not a violent 3 month chancer who can't even successfully send her a few quid.

Sparklesocks · 21/02/2024 13:46

As others said I bet he only tried to transfer the cash after she’d won. And I know every banking app is different but with mine the money instantly transfers or it doesn’t, it doesn’t do it 40 mins later. If there’s no signal then it will fail and you have to manually try again, but it won’t automatically retry itself some minutes later. Even if that’s true, the money didn’t clear at the time of purchase so she used her own cash to buy them.

i think he’s at it. And they aren’t married so I can’t see how he has legal grounds.

Love51 · 21/02/2024 13:46

The relationship length shouldn't make a difference. If you want a share of someone else's lottery winnings you either need to be married or have a syndicate agreement.
Those two relationship types are very rarely the only two in their side of a Venn diagram.

35965a · 21/02/2024 13:43

Her cash. 3 months barely makes him a boyfriend let alone a partner. He should piss off.

MariaLuna · 21/02/2024 13:42

Half a million for a 3-month relationship?! Fuck that!

YouJustDoYou · 21/02/2024 13:41

She's correct. She bought it, she scratched it.

Sparklyhat · 21/02/2024 13:39

HeadsShouldersTitsandArse · 21/02/2024 13:35

its hers. She brought it.

She could have brought it and let him scratch it. It’s still hers. They wouldn’t be in the position they were in if she hadn’t paid for the ticket.

Bought not brought 🫣
But i agree its hers. I can imagine at the time it was a joint thing them buying it together but since they broke up shortly after and it was her who bought it he doesn't have any claim to it now they are separated

Eze · 21/02/2024 13:39

He’s a chancer. She paid for two tickets and “when she got home she scratched it”. Did he scratch a dud one and she scratched the winning one?

She’s well rid especially as he pinched it when she wanted to break up with him. Glad she put her name on the back.

He’s already threatened to sue, hope that’s kicked out as well. Trying to claim her winnings on a scratch card she bought, scratched and stick her name on.

Wouldnt be surprised it he did transfer her some money after he realised she’d won.

HeadsShouldersTitsandArse · 21/02/2024 13:35

its hers. She brought it.

She could have brought it and let him scratch it. It’s still hers. They wouldn’t be in the position they were in if she hadn’t paid for the ticket.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 21/02/2024 13:32

When Charlotte walked out on Michael a few weeks later, she was deemed to be the sole winner of the jackpot by lottery chiefs

If this is correct then it's all that needs to be said

And no, he's not a "partner" after just a few weeks - he's a chancer flapping his mouth in the hope of getting something

Gloriosaford · 21/02/2024 13:32

GoingDownLikeBHS · 21/02/2024 13:23

Bloody hell she’s had a lucky escape there, cash or no cash.

I agree but I also think she should be careful, this man will be convinced that at least half the money is rightfully his, probably has convinced himself that it all belongs to him because of the stress caused by not having any of it, or something like that.
Anyway I would be concerned that he will take revenge.

ScottBakula · 21/02/2024 13:32

In situations like this I always think would the non winner ( in this case the guy ) offer to help bail her out if she suddenly got into debt.

I recon most would run for the hills .
If you won't help people when they are down on their luck , don't expect them to help you when they have got a good thing going .

BobnLen · 21/02/2024 13:30

I didn't realise it was a recent boyfriend, so no she shouldn't have to share it

CadoAvo · 21/02/2024 13:30

Has she been paid the cash yet?

I'm team her.

Ohnoohohhoohh · 21/02/2024 13:29

I can see why he's an ex

NecessaryNC24 · 21/02/2024 13:28

MarnieMarnie · 21/02/2024 13:19

If they were together 3 months he's not her partner and of course he has no right to the money.

☝🏻 This.

Testina · 21/02/2024 13:28

Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong · 21/02/2024 13:25

'partner' after 3 months? That's misleading - in both the thread title and article.

Tbf, every other person on MN AIBU uses “partner” to mean “complete waste of space that I’ve been dating for 3 months”.

Sarvanga38 · 21/02/2024 13:28

Bet she wouldn't have seen him for dust if he'd had the ticket. Good move on her part.

YetMoreNewBeginnings · 21/02/2024 13:27

He’s at it.

He “attempted” to transfer her money - I’d bet money that was after she’d scratched it.

I’m glad her friends/family/whoever presumably helped her see that sharing £1million from her scratch card with someone she’d been dating for 12 weeks was madness.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 21/02/2024 13:27

YANBU.

Michael admits that Charlotte both paid for and scratched the ticket. But he also claims that he was the one who suggested she buy the ticket and attempted to transfer her cash to cover the purchase while they were in the shop. HmmHmmHmm

This paltry bullshit alone tells us she made the right decision to pack up her ticket and run like the wind.

Testina · 21/02/2024 13:27

I’d love to know the actual details!
In the article - not that I trust The Metro to report it right anyway - he says the bank transfer went through 40 minutes later. She says he never gave her money. So that’s one black or white thing - did he or didn’t he pay her money?
Of course then you could argue that he was paying his share of the Lidl shop, not for the scratchies… so I’m not saying it’s conclusive. But, it’s a yes/no point easily proven - one of them is lying about his supposed money transfer.
If they paid for them jointly with the intention of it being joint winnings - morally I think it should be shared.
But that’s not the legal position.
Anyway my gut feel is that it was her idea to get them, she paid, and if he transferred money later it was only because she won.

NotaNorovirusFan · 21/02/2024 13:26

Even less sympathy for him after reading the article and seeing that he initially stole the ticket from her after they spilt up and she had to get Camelot involved to get it back! Was he planning to share it with her then?

Saymyname28 · 21/02/2024 13:26

They'd been together 3 months and she bought it.

He's a right scrounger.
