To ask if Million pound lottery winner who refuses to share money with partner should have shared?

I am surprised this isn't on here actually. It's been on the news for 2 days, and has just been discussed on Loose Women.

From the article...

A couple are waging war over a £1 million lotto scratchcard they ‘purchased together’ weeks before breaking up.

Michael Cartlidge, 39, and former partner Charlotte Cox, 37, purchased the
Lottery card together at a shop in Spalding, Lincs. But when Charlotte walked out on Michael a few weeks later, she was deemed to be the sole winner of the jackpot by lottery chiefs.

Michael admits that Charlotte both paid for and scratched the ticket. But he also claims that he was the one who suggested she buy the ticket and attempted to transfer her cash to cover the purchase while they were in the shop.
He says the mum-of-one initially agreed to split the cash, but later welched on the deal after breaking up with him a few weeks later and claimed she was the sole winner of the jackpot.

He said ‘£1million has never brought such misery.’

So, was the woman (Charlotte) wrong to have kept all the money to herself? They were not married, they didn't own any property together or have joint finances, and they'd only been together 3 months. Lottery chiefs said she is the sole owner of the money and does not have to share it.

YABU - she was WRONG to keep the money and should have split it with him. They were 'a couple.' He didn't pay for the ticket, but they got it at the same time.

YANBU - she was RIGHT to keep it - as she paid for the ticket herself, and didn't need to share it. They'd only been together 3 months, they weren't married, and they didn't have a house together or joint finances.

It's tricky though as if you go in together and one of you says 'hey, let's get a scratch card' and the other one says 'ok' and pays for it as they are buying other stuff then it could be seen as a joint purchase. It's not like any two people would hold the ticket together, scratch it together and say ti the cashier please split the price between the two of us.

It would be like deciding to buy a pizza together and then not giving the other person any.

Even less sympathy for him after reading the article and seeing that he initially stole the ticket from her after they split up and she had to get Camelot involved to get it back! Was he planning to share it with her then?

Blimey, I missed that bit.* *Shock Yeah like hell was he planning to share it with her. Horrible man!

She was very smart to get her name written on the back sharpish.

He attempted to transfer her a couple a quid?? Oh come on!!
He ‘encouraged her to buy it’… again ‘give over!’
If he’d wanted to buy one he’d have bought one too!
And let’s face it, if it was other way round I bet he’d have legged it with the money too… I think pretty much 99% of people would not share a million pound with someone they’d known 12 weeks!!

This. ^ After 12 weeks of dating, I was getting to really like my now DH, and looked forward to seeing him, and he was generous and kind, and we were planning a long weekend together in London, and had had around 20 dates. If I had won a shit ton of money - like a million (it would have been 'the pools' then as there was no lottery,) no WAY would I have given him half. Not at that point.

I would have probably have bought him a new car, and treated him to a really nice holiday that he could not otherwise have afforded, and a few nice clothes, a posh watch, some nice new tech etc, and I certainly would not have dumped him. But no WAY would I have shared a million with him - a boyfriend of 12 weeks. And mine was a decent one. It sounds like this woman's 'boyfriend' was an aggressive loser anyway.

If we had been together 3-4 years, and had a house together and were planning on getting married, that would be different. I would have considered sharing it then. But 12 weeks>>> ?? No!

Well the National Lottery publicity worked on the £62m win as I've just bought a ticket 😂

Just looked up my mainly hypothetical numbers and they've never won in over 20 years.

LT1982 · 25/02/2024 09:02

SweetBirdsong · 21/02/2024 21:37

They were together for 13 weeks! 😆

I've had food in my fridge longer than the amount of time they dated!

She owes him nothing.

And the lottery bosses said so too.

He says he is going to 'take it further.'

He will get nothing, and end up owing 1000s in legal fees.

Idiotic man!

Why should she share with her ex-boyfriend? It's her money.

ex boyfriend of 12 weeks as well. Hardly a long term committed relationship

Wow. Just wow. Glad she's rid of him!

AuntMarch · 24/02/2024 07:50

@Rottweilermummy maybe he showed his true colours with the greed! His reaction/behaviour is far more likely to be the reason she didn't want to share/stay together.

The more I think about it though, I actually don't think I would give it away to short term boyfriend. I'd spend some on them/us, but not gift it. I don't know why that feel different to me.

Rottweilermummy · 24/02/2024 07:39

I've learned a lot from this post, I didn't know he was about to go on trial for assaulting a previous partner I didn't know he originally stole ticket from her, anf that they had only been together 3 months. Me being me before learning this info, was thinking what a cow to not share and then dump him 🤣
I think generally regardless of length of relationship , and 3 months in I would have felt quite settled and would have shared winnings, maybe not given them equal if I had bought ticket but definitely given them something

So if he had written his name on it what then?

She’d likely have been the one Camelot gave the money too after an investigation as she can prove she bought and paid for it.

Had she written both of their names on it he might have had a sniff…

OneFrenchEgg · 24/02/2024 00:49

Radioshark · 23/02/2024 18:10

She bought the ticket and it was her name on the back so it is her money.

He's also up in court for battering his ex so I'd say karma bit this c^nt in the arse

If you try and transfer money, and it doesn't go through, does the app keep on trying or does one have to do it again?

Not with any of the three banks I bank with. It either goes through or fails.

His story is the cctv shows him trying to transfer the money, the shop assistant recalls him doing this. My view is coloured by the people I see buying loads of cards and swapping teeny amounts of cash or discussing it.
Neither of them sound lovely, but I think they should split it.

Not sure how the cctv will show that. He may have just been looking at something on the phone.

The main thing is he didn't transfer the money or pay for the card.

chiwwy · 23/02/2024 11:35

A judge would laugh him out of court. If he had the money to buy the scratchcard, why didn't he just buy it? Transferring such a small amount of money to his girlfriend to buy it when they were together just makes zero sense.

I hope she doesn't give the chancing prick a penny.

peakygold · 23/02/2024 11:10

I'd offer him a sum, with an NDA and a restraining order just to keep his flappy mouth shut.

Hummusandstuff · 23/02/2024 11:05

Voted she should have shared before seeing the updates. Yep she should keep it and forget she ever met him. Not enough information really though.
