Just wondering what your true JUDGY thoughts are? I don't wear makeup often I'm in my mid forties. How am I perceived? Lazy? Frumpy? Not caring? Boring? Can't be bothered to make an effort for others ? Or self confident enough not to ' need' it, regardless of how attractive you view yourself ?

Does this really need another/follow up thread? Confused

I am pretty sure everyone said what they needed to say during the 1000 posts on the last one!

And yes I know I could have ignored it/scrolled past, but I'm entitled to my opinion. And that opinion is that it didn't need another thread.

If I saw a woman over 40 without make up my thoughts on her will be coloured by the occasion (gym, hospital, wedding), the context in which I see her (recently bereaved, just woke up, recovering from surgery, walking the dog), how the rest of her appearance looks in terms of style and grooming. Her accent and voice as well, does she sound like a posh woman,a rough accent, an essex accent?

If she looks good I would wonder if she has no make up make up on, of if she works in skin and beauty so has access to all the best tech or if she is a rich woman having a day off (sports, tired, feeling down, letting skin 'breathe').

If she has skin issues that would look better with make up like pigmentation, dark circles, sallow skin (basically how I look without make up) then I would wonder if she is ill, depressed or doesn't know how to apply make up (because that's my situation) because I know she would look better with some and it doesn't even take much time or products. The only times I haven't bothered were when I was too sad or ill or both to bother with make up.

If she looks average, depending on her mannerisms, voice tone and clothes I would wonder if she is a butch lesbian or religious or super feminist.

How on earth do you manage if you meet four women without make up? All those judgments must be exhausting.🙄

Good lord.

I have horrendous dark circles - I am part Indian, it’s quite common in some parts of India, it’s mainly the shape of my face and how my eyes are set.

I don’t cover them up. They don’t bother me. I honestly have no thoughts on if other people think they look bad. It doesn’t make mean I’m depressed. Just because you would want to cover up, doesn’t mean other people would. We all care about different things. What’s a problem to you didn’t register to me.

I look like I’ve been dragged through a hedge backwards sometimes because appearance does not matter to me, it never has done. Not when I was very rich and not now that I have nothing.

I am not religious, a super feminist or a “butch lesbian”.

I am 44, very posh but due to shit life circumstances, I’ve ended up living on the edge of a council estate in a crap area, make up less, no less!

You’d probably would have had a hard time pigeon holing me based off my appearance, if it was now or 15 years ago when I was living in my massive country pile. I’ve always looked the same.

winemonster · 20/02/2024 09:25

I wear make up, some might say a full face every single day for decades but it takes me less than 10 mins. It’s as normal as putting clothes on. I also wash blow dry and straighten my hair after shower every morning. I’m the least high maintenance person you can meet in terms of anything else, else except self grooming and cleanliness. Btw I’ve never had my nails done, eyelashes or lips. Just make up, hair and cleanliness will do me. I see mums on school run with no make up and you know what I don’t think anything. Live and let live 🤔

elastamum · 20/02/2024 09:20

I rarely wear makeup. I am nearly 60 and honestly can't be bothered anymore. I don't care what people think. I look old, but I am slim and fit which is much more important at my age. Mind you, I have just been out clearing the drains in my stableyard this morning and can't imagine why I would get made up for that. I don't think the horses noticed.

NonPlayerCharacter · 20/02/2024 09:16

Let's ask Joe Dolan.

Howmanycatsistoomany · 20/02/2024 09:14

IME it's mostly the women who slap it on with a trowel who judge those of us who don't.

MariaVT65 · 20/02/2024 09:08

I’m mid 30s with 2 young kids and as PP said, one of my issues is mainly that I prioritise other things with my little time.

However, i am lucky in that many women have been kind in complimenting me on apparently having decent skin and already super-long eye lashes.

I sometimes find concealer makes me feel better make me look less exhausted. But I also have what they call ‘hooded eyes’ (i think) so eyeshadow doesn’t even show unless my eyes are closed.

I hardly own any makeup but I do put a bit on for special occasions such as weddings.

My DH is so used to me without makeup that he thinks I look weird with it on.

I currently look like absolute shit and would love to feel better about myself, but even then, my priorities are losing weight, trying to prevent so much postpartum hair loss again, and finding some decent clothes that fit while I am so fat after my c section.

I also stopped dying my hair years ago, and now some greys are appearing, so I guess that may also start again before makeup.

In terms of your original question of what I think of others, I definitely ‘judge’ women who look like they are absolutely caked in makeup and look really fake. I think natural is better.

Good grief, that’s a whole lot of judgement! Butch lesbian, or religious, or super feminist!? How about she’s ok with looking like herself and doesn’t see the point in painting on a mask? If people don’t like how I look, they’re not going to like me any better if I paint my face, are they?

Theraffarian · 20/02/2024 09:00

@CoffeeAddick Thank goodness I wear a little make up every time I leave the house , because I’m over 40 and have an mild Essex accent . ( not the towie type one in case you’ve never actually made it to Essex and think the 1.5 million people who live here all speak with the same Essex accent . )
But pray tell how my accent would effect your judgment of me if I stepped out of my door one day without a little eyeliner .

In answer to the original question, I don’t judge women for not wearing make up . My job means we are expected to look professional, and the majority do wear subtle make up , but I certainly don’t judge the lady who doesn’t, it’s just not her thing .

OceanicBoundlessness · 20/02/2024 08:59

I don't notice or care.

I generally don't wear makeup. Never foundation. If I do it's a bit of eyeshadow and mascara and some cheek stuff...blusher? My grandmother's generation used to call it rouge.

I'm mid 40s. I just think it reflects my personality. A bit slapdash, not much time.

We're all average love.

Does this really all go through your head every time you see a woman without make up on? Do you think you might be need some sort of therapy? Because honestly I don't think normal people [maybe average people] do this every day.

And it is 'Ultra' not 'Super' feminist. Get with the lingo grandma.

NoMoreFalafelsForYou · 20/02/2024 08:49

Surely not wearing make up is totally normal? I wouldn’t judge or even notice to be honest
Same, I honestly could not care less and find it sad that others do seem to care so much, enough to do two threads on it as well!
As for the pp who's wanging on about "rough" accents, skin issues and butch lesbians..... 🙄🤣

Frosty1000 · 20/02/2024 08:49

Absolutely no judgement here, why on earth should anyone care what someone does. I would think she has confidence to go against the social pressure of wearing some.

I rarely wear any nowadays seeing as I WFH and only do the school run and pop to Tesco's etc.

BrioNotBiro · 20/02/2024 08:45

"If she looks average, depending on her mannerisms, voice tone and clothes I would wonder if she is a butch lesbian or religious or super feminist."

I'm laughing at this (as an ordinary woman who more often than not doesn't wear make up) wondering what other wild assumptions people make of me as I reveal my hideous naked visage to the world!😜

Crunchingleaf · 20/02/2024 08:45

Day to day I would say not wearing make up is the default. Some women never leave the house without it and some never ever wear it. I think the rest of us fall in between always wearing it and never wearing it.
Personally, I just don’t have the time to spend on it everyday. Most of my working career has been in places where I can’t wear it or would have to take it off in work to do certain tasks.
I would never go out for evening or attend a special occasion without make up though. That’s a me thing though.

In general I don’t pay much heed to the appearance of others.

Diamondcurtains · 20/02/2024 08:44

Urm I doubt I’d even notice! I wear make up sometimes but not every day and only if I’m leaving the house.

Omg 🤦‍♀️. You really face that some thought!

IwishIcouldfinishabook · 20/02/2024 08:42

I don't wear makeup. I have recently tried starting as I'm getting older and I do a lot of Teams calls for work, and sometimes get a shock when I see my own face on screen. I don't think anything of women who don't wear makeup, but I work with young people and I do feel sorry for young women who wear lots of makeup, because to me it indicates a lack of confidence and I do wonder why they feel the need- not if they have a bit of foundation, mascara añd lipstick but the thick foundation, false lashes towie look. They are lovely, polite, hardworking young women working towards a professional career so I do feel like saying ' I bet you look lovely under all that makeup' but I don't.

Ouchmyarse · 20/02/2024 08:40

I don’t wear make up because I can’t be arsed. I wore it as a teen, but got bored of if fast.

I can’t see my own face (unless I look in the mirror, but I don’t spend a lot of time doing the that), and I honestly couldn’t give a shit what anyone else thinks of my appearance, never have done.

I don’t notice or care what other people do. Wear make up, don’t wear it, it’s nothing to do with me. I’m wrapped up in my own problems. I don’t have time to contemplate other peoples faces.

graceinspace999 · 20/02/2024 08:39

I think they’ve made a choice and are strong since they’ve managed to stop cosmetic industries making them feel ‘less than.’

However, too much make up is another thing.

For example, giant eyelashes that inhibit the wearer’s eyesight.

But I judge the industries that promote them rather than the wearer.

I just hope the wearer ‘sees’ for herself one day as judging her would just be nasty and pointless.

WandaWonder · 20/02/2024 08:35

As I said in the other thread I don't wear makeup, I have no idea what I think of others who don't and I do what I do, what others do is up to them

Fizbosshoes · 20/02/2024 08:32

I'm.mid 40s and only really wear make up if I'm going out eg for dinner, to meet friends etc. I could easily go a week or more without putting it on.
I think I look nicer with it but a) I'm pretty lazy and b) I have oily skin, and I generally dislike the idea of adding a layer of something greasy to it (I don't wear moisturiser regularly for the same reason)
It's never crossed my mind what other people think of the fact I'm not wearing make up, despite not being particularly self confident.

Hiddenvoice · 20/02/2024 08:32

MyLadyTheKingsMother · 20/02/2024 08:14

I DO hope your DH told her to go fuck herself?

He did! He’s not confrontational in the slightest but he told them to leave and we’ve not seen them since. It d shame as it’s his friends wife but my dh has made his feelings clear. Very thankful for him!

LolaSmiles · 20/02/2024 08:28

I'd not notice if someone isn't wearing makeup vs someone who is wearing a light coverage assuming both people are washed, clean and dressed in clean clothes / to suit the situation (eg being muddy after a dog walk or a run makes sense).

Agree with PP that being clean and dressed in clean clothes is what's noticed more than make up.
