How do you feel about women that don't wear make-up -thread 2

Just wondering what your true JUDGY thoughts are? I don't wear makeup often I'm in my mid forties. How am I perceived? Lazy? Frumpy? Not caring? Boring? Can't be bothered to make an effort for others ? Or self confident enough not to ' need' it, regardless of how attractive you view yourself ?

I think, good for them, for not feeling like they have to conform to societies expectations. Everytime I see another new mascara or shampoo ad on TV I think we are being manipulated by the beauty industry every day. It is so much nonsense.

xanadu123 · 20/02/2024 11:16

I don't have any opinions. And unless someone is wearing heavy make up I can't always tell who has makeup or doesn't.

I do notice when women have really striking eyes and don't wear eye makeup as I need make up for my eyes to stand out. So I will admire them.

I always gasp in horror and cringe when i see women with a face full of make up.

You must really struggle with daily life!

🤣🤣🤣🤣 this poster would be confused as fuck when she sees me with lashes, lip fillers and botox but not a bit of makeup when I'm chairing a child protection meeting.
I don't look like a sex doll and I'm not any of the stereotypes suggested in the thread. Imagine believing women can make choices about their own faces as they see fit.

I looked this up. Interesting

Oh, I thought she was just saying that women who wear makeup are fat!

EmilyTjP · 20/02/2024 11:07

I feel sorry for them.

I think to me it links to the hyper feminisation of fat women in order to be perceived as attractive.

I generally think I don't really notice.
I wear very minimal makeup day to day, just because I'm late 40s and look like death without it. When I was in my 20s I didn't bother.
The 28 year old I work with has made a conscious decision not to wear make up for work because she doesn't want the young girls she teaches to see it as something you have to do to look good, which I think is great.

I always gasp in horror and cringe when i see women with a face full of make up. Even more so with lip fillers and false brows and lashes. It looks grotesque, they look like sex dolls. It makes me wonder what happened to them to have such a low self image and need to alter their faces so drastically.

I hate that so many women participate in it. No wonder girls want to become boys to escape it.

Really? You sound deranged quite honestly. Do you really not have anything else in your repertoire to gasp in horror at in this world, lucky you....

Ruminate2much · 20/02/2024 10:47

I genuinely don't think it would cross my mind either way to be honest. I'd see it as a personal taste thing - just like other fashion choices people might make.
I wouldn't make any kind of judgement either way.
I don't wear much makeup myself. A bit occasionally. But only a bit of concealer when needed, and maybe some blusher if I'm tired. But, very little. Many days none at all. My reasons are that I've just never got in the habit. I'm an outdoorsy girl, and also to be honest would rather spend my time and money on other things. But, each to their own.

steppemum · 20/02/2024 10:35

I'm in my 50s.
I have never worn daily make-up. I used to wear some make up going out, but nothing like a full face. Now I don't wear any usually.
I am amazed when my teen dd spends 30 minutes doing make up.

It just isn't part of who I am. I have very ordinary face and hair. I wear things like navy jeans and an M&S jumper. So no fast fashion, but boring middle aged.

On the other hand I am a teacher, pastoral care worker, and busy and active.

I just can't bring myself to care about make up.

I never notice if women are wearing it or not unless they have a huge full face on, and then I wonder what the occasion is, or it might idly cross my mind to wonder why they need it/bother on a daily basis.

But I have never worked in a corporate environment. Maybe it is different. Just like I have never really worn 'work clothes' (suits/tights heels etc)

WotNoUserName · 20/02/2024 10:24

I don't wear make up. I never have bar a few teenage experiments where it got wiped off immediately as I couldn't stand the feel of it on my skin. I'm autistic and even struggle with having sun cream on.

I don't really notice if other people are or aren't wearing make up. Unless they go for the bright orange look/drawn on eyebrows etc.

And the ones with the enormous false eyelashes that makes me wonder how they can have a full range of vision, and don't jump every second thinking there's a spider crawling down their face!

Fixesplease · 20/02/2024 10:13

I'm 40, never really have worn make up often, unless I'm 'out, out'.

I really don't care enough to pay attention to who's wearing what on their faces.
Although, that said, I often wonder how those woman who are beautifully made up have the time or inclination to do so.

Each to their own.

Guavafish1 · 20/02/2024 10:09

Do you put the same effort into thinking about what men look like?

I hope not, she’d never get a thing done, handwringing over everyone’s appearance, body language and actions.

Life sounds exhausting enough as it is trying to work out if every woman without lip liner is a depressed, butch lesbian from Essex.

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 20/02/2024 09:50

I notice more if a woman wears a lot of make up rather than no make-up. I don't wear a lot - takes me 5 mins, if that - but younger women with contouring, fake eyelashes and orange faces will always be far more noticeable.

If I saw a woman over 40 without make up my thoughts on her will be coloured by the occasion (gym, hospital, wedding), the context in which I see her (recently bereaved, just woke up, recovering from surgery, walking the dog), how the rest of her appearance looks in terms of style and grooming. Her accent and voice as well, does she sound like a posh woman,a rough accent, an essex accent?

If she looks good I would wonder if she has no make up make up on, of if she works in skin and beauty so has access to all the best tech or if she is a rich woman having a day off (sports, tired, feeling down, letting skin 'breathe').

If she has skin issues that would look better with make up like pigmentation, dark circles, sallow skin (basically how I look without make up) then I would wonder if she is ill, depressed or doesn't know how to apply make up (because that's my situation) because I know she would look better with some and it doesn't even take much time or products. The only times I haven't bothered were when I was too sad or ill or both to bother with make up.

If she looks average, depending on her mannerisms, voice tone and clothes I would wonder if she is a butch lesbian or religious or super feminist.

Do you put the same effort into thinking about what men look like?

On a similar note, I didn't realise what assumptions people made about going out with wet hair until I joined MN (my own mum was quite judgy but she had never informed me!🤣)

My only thoughts of someone going out with wet hair are they've just had a shower/been swimming/to the gym and either havent had time ,or don't want to heat dry it. I had no idea others thought it meant you were lazy/depressed/had a chaotic homelife/going through a trauma etc! Blush

(Of course I still go out with wet hair sometimes, since I don't hear any of the judgey assumptions!)
