Karen’s Diner/Katie Hopkins - cancel?

Quick question:
In the words of Mumsnet, AIBU?
It’s my eldest’s 30th this year, and as a surprise I’ve planned a day out for us on March 17th. We’re going to Hello Kitty cafe, Priscilla the Party and ending up in Karen’s Diner in Islington.
Some of you might know Karen’s from Social media. You basically get insulted and it looks very amusing.
I see from their insta, they’re doing some kind of collaboration with Katie Hopkins in their Manchester and Birmingham restaurants I think.
I am horrified and have left comments to that effect.
I actually feel that I want to cancel, and it’s a shame as it’s something we’d wanted to do for ages.
I however, cannot give my hard earned ££ to an organisation that is giving a platform to a racist right wing Trump supporting bigot.
Am I being unreasonable to cancel our reservation??

@RosaMoline why do you find misogyny funny?

Ella31 · 17/02/2024 01:01

There's was a post in one of our papers here [ireland] about one that opened in Dublin in the last few days. It was very interesting. The reviewer said kids are allowed in and a six year old was pulled up to the top and sung to for her birthday but the song was happy birthday f##k off - now I know it's the parents job here not to expose their kids to that crap, but I found it really weird reading that. Apparently the C word was floating around as well.

Just to add I'm not being a baby or anything regarding the swearing or anything. It just seemed a bit much

hallucinatingmaybe · 17/02/2024 01:01

I lived in London when that place in Soho was a thing, couldn't fathom paying money to be insulted back then either. Nowt as queer as folk I guess but I think whoever ran it was laughing the hardest.

WellThatEsculatedQuickly · 17/02/2024 00:52

They might cancel on you anyway...

I wouldn’t go there.

Several of their sites have had zero food hygiene ratings, some have had drug raids and a friend told me about this horrific incident at her local one.

I wouldn’t want anything to do with any business affiliated with the truly vile KH

I've just read the article, thanks for posting it @ButtonMoonLoon If ever there was a reason not to go that's it. Horrible.

Yuckyyuckyuckity · 17/02/2024 00:40

KH aside the whole day sounds like my idea of hell!

You should cancel anyway because a cafe that’s ethos is built on a misogynistic trope is bullshit.

This

LauderSyme · 17/02/2024 00:28

You would be unreasonable to ever go there and contribute anything to this business.

bingoringo4 · 17/02/2024 00:23

The Katie thing wouldn't bother me, but the diner sounds horrendous

I think the people that like this grim place are the same sort who enjoy Mrs Brown’s Boys. Completely basic sense of ‘humour’.

Tattletwat · 17/02/2024 00:12

MrsSkylerWhite · 17/02/2024 00:08

Why would you take your daughter somewhere to be insulted for her birthday?

Because people are dumb

Tattletwat · 17/02/2024 00:11

You are a idiot if you go to this establishment. So no sympathy from further shit from them.

They are w bunch of pillocks either join in or not

SherbetDips · 17/02/2024 00:11

Fantastic I love Katie Hopkins. Someone who isn’t afraid to speak her mind and upset the woke brigade.

This!

@AmaryllisChorus you wonder how it lasted so long, but I suppose it was easier in pre SoMe times.

RubaiyatOfAnyone · 16/02/2024 23:38

What, this Katie Hopkins?

BIL told me there used to be a Chinese restaurant in Soho some 20+ years ago where the staff were very rude. I think it inadvertently became a ‘thing’ for a while.

I worked in a restaurant around the corner from Wong Kei about 35 years ago. We got loads of customers who had walked out of Wong Kei because the food and service were so bad.

SwedishEdith · 16/02/2024 23:33

Christ, just looked at the photos on Tripadvisor. The hats people are wearing in front of young kids 🙄 Looks awful - "humour" for people unfunny people.

LadyWithLapdog · 16/02/2024 23:28

@CharSiu @LeSoleil yes, they didn’t put it on, probably just tired and grumpy. I didn’t go, but BIL went with his friends quite a few times.

LeSoleil · 16/02/2024 23:25

@LadyWithLapdog I remember it. There was an elderly Chinese waitress who was exceptionally terse with diners. It was not acting, it was just the way the staff dealt with the constant footfall of diners.

CharSiu · 16/02/2024 23:25

@LadyWithLapdog it was called Wong Kei , I’m actually Chinese and didn’t want to go but my friends insisted, this would have have been about 25 years ago. The food was crap, I found it all deeply uncomfortable. No idea if it is still there.

I think the Karen’s diner thing is just awful.

We just thought it would be a fun thing to do. It appeals to our sense of humour.

Hmm. Because ageism and misogyny is hilarious.
