I know at one time there was a single dose Rubella vaccination which eas given to all girls at about age 12 in the 1980's. Does that still exist, or has it been superceded by the MMR? Also, I believe there was an earlier single version of the Measles vaccine but that there were concerns re brain damage.
At least, this is what my mother told me, when she she explained why I wasn't given the measles vaccine. I got measles just after my 5th birthday party in April, and had a party just before I came down with it, so I gave it to half of the class
I only found out years later that one boy ended up in ICU and another ended up with brain damage
Thankfully I wasn't that badly affected but I remember feeling so ill I was scared I was going to die, and I was left with permanent sight damage.
I remember coming out in a rash after the rubella vaccine at school, and I was taken back to see the nurse who gave me the vax, along with a group of other children. It turned out that this reaction occurred if you had already had German Measles when younger, and it faded very quickly.
This would have been pre MMR, so we weren't given those vacccines because pf the Wakefield thing.
I also remember getting whooping cough just as I started high school, and it was utterly terrifying. I remember feeling like I was choking to death, and looking in the mirror as I was coughing over the sink and seeing that I had turned purple. I .
My mum says she can't remember why I didn't have a vaccine or whether I was ever offered one (we moved around a lot when I was a kid).
The scariest thing in retrospect was that this was just seen as normal. Measles, German Measles, Mumps, Whooping Cough , Chicken Pox and Scarlet Fever was seen as normal childhood illnesses. Needless to say, my kids have had all of their vaccinations!

You can't get single dose rubella or mumps vaccines and the single dose measles vaccine is the same 1 that was on offer when you were a child which is 1 of the reasons that it's not used in the uk. The single vaccines just aren't as effective as the mmr, they give limited protection (so you still caught the illness but it was a very mild disease) and then theres the added risk of a bad reaction from having 6 separate vaccines instead of 2 doses of the mmr.

Vaccines are a victim of their own success, most anti-vaxers have never seen anyone who has been harmed or killed by say measles or rubella, they just can't conceive of an illness doing the rounds at school and up to 1/4 of the school students vanishing because they are dead or at a special institution due to being blind, deaf and/or brain damaged, those of us who do remember the true horrors of these diseases vaccinate our children and look on at those who don't as murderous fools and know that they will have to explain to there kids (if there lucky enough to survive) why they chose to let them suffer instead of giving them a safe vaccine, others will bury there kids all because they know better than Dr's

WhatsTheUseOfWorrying · 19/02/2024 11:25

but I have experienced vaccine injury and I'm sharing that experience.

Why? For what purpose?

You say you’re pro-vaccination. Why be supportive with one hand and fearmonger with the other?

If you want to talk about vaccine injury why don’t you tell the whole truth each time, that such reaction is massively, overwhelmingly unlikely?

I am not sure what you say happened but your language and use of certain words suggests you spend time on anti vaxxer sites and makes me sceptical of everything you say.

Believe me, I do not spend any time on anti-vaxxer sites - I'm not an anti vaxxer at all, my children and I are fully vaccinated against everything so how am I an anti vaxxer? I have said vaccines save lives, but I have experienced vaccine injury and I'm sharing that experience.

You are proving my point though. I agree with you and you are arguing against me, so if someone is worried and you are this aggressive to them, how is it going to help? All in asking for is empathy rather than shutting down any questions that people may have. I've seen loads of posters do this in an empathetic and kind way, I'm not sure why this is controversial.

I can describe the injury if you want but I don't think it will help add to my point or the thread.

You may be sceptical but it DID happen and I still vaccinated my children because I truly believe that vaccines save lives. It just makes me more empathetic to the questioners and hopefully help others to see the risk v benefit of vaccines.

I don't think it is anything to do with covid apart from the fact that it made it even easier to promote conspiracy theories. Grifters are making a fortune on social media . I agree it is not helpful to try and shame people but at the same time I am sceptical that all the posters who seem to know someone who is vaccine damaged are genuine. It is extremely rare.

It would help to reassure people if you didn’t punt out “catastrophic vaccine injury” all the time.

You say it didn’t change your mind. So what’s the value to anyone else of your referring to it?

Catastrophic vaccine injury is incredibly rare. Much, much rarer than terrible injury or death from the diseases. So why do you bang on about it?

I don’t believe there is general mistrust in the medical profession. Except among the stranger sort of conspiracist.

Firstly, I do not 'bang on about it - it was a horrific time, I refer to it because I weighed up the risk v's benefit for my children despite witnessing it. I think it's helpful to parents who are wary of vaccine injury that despite that happening I still proceeded to give my children it.

It may be rare but it happened. If we know the vaccine injuries happen they have to happens to somebody. I don't particularly care if you believe me, it happened and I still vaccinated my children as I believe vaccines save lives. I am just more empathetic to people questioning and having concerns because of it.

Anecdotally there is a feeling of mistrust, you see it on here, education and empathy is the key not aggressively shutting down even the innocuous questions.

Yes exactly!! It concerns me that vaccine rates are so low and the aggressive approach is just turning people away. Since COVID there is a massive mistrust in medical professionals and government and that needs to be built back rather than name calling and shaming.

Not all of us are rabid anti vaxxers though. Some of us genuinely have had bad experiences. The benefit of the discussion is honesty. There can be nothing gained from hiding the truth as all it does is generate mistrust and more people will refuse vaccines. We can't have an echo chamber on such important issues.

The trouble with engaging mildly with anti-vaxxers is that it allows them to suggest that there’s a valid reason for shunning vaccines, that there’s something to their arguments.

That’s why anti-vaxxers adopt the ‘I’m pro-vaccine but…’ and the ‘woe is me, everyone’s so horrible’ lines. It’s all bogus.

People with concerns can get all the help and reassurance they need from medical professionals. There’s no benefit to anyone in anti-vax arguments in forums like this. Anti-vaxxers need to be shut down.

But this is the point, it's not the anti-vaxxers that you are trying to influence it's the vaccine questioners. Some people you will never be able to influence but those who are worried will read these threads and be aggressively shut down for asking questions.

It is healthy to ask questions about something you are putting into the most precious thing in the world. People need empathy and education. Like I said, all my children have had their vaccines despite witnessing a catastrophic vaccine injury because the benefits outweighed the risk for me. If people hear stories like mine they may be more inclined to weigh up the risk but shutting down concerns has never worked for influencing people.

I'm just saying its far more prevalent than we know , and its happening across all cohorts no matter the background of the mother.

You seem to have changed name.

Willyoujustbequiet · 19/02/2024 09:01

Exactly.

Positions at the far end of the scale on either side simply aren't helpful. Yes deaths caused by vaccines are rare but they happen. If you are one of those families having to bury a healthy young person following a jab then some of the name calling and lack of empathy shown on here is a disgrace.

If you are, there’s no evidence for this at all. It’s wrong. Demonstrably wrong.

I don't know if there is anything in this , but my group of 7 nct mothers, 3 children are asd and one is on route to diagnosis.

This was a very varied cohort; young , slightly older mums, various races and yet more than 50% have children on the spectrum.

It IS rare but it does happen and I think some empathy for those questioning vaccines is needed. A family friend was left severely disabled due to the meningitis vaccine, however, I still gave the vaccine to my children as I also know of a child who died of meningitis. The risk of them contracting meningitis v's vaccine injury was worth it for me.

I think the name calling and shaming of people for vaccine questioning is awful, education is what is needed. I have read some vaccine threads where the people are backing up what they say with facts and empathy but those that call the OP names just push people away and the chance to educate and influence them to change their minds.

Bit like posters claiming to be pro-vaccine when their posting history tells another story.

If I wasn't pro vaccination why on earth would my kids be fully vaccinated, the most recent of which was st school only a fortnight ago.

Vaccine damage is incredibly rare, most people have no more than a bit of a fever.

Something else that is incredibly rare is water toxicity. It can lead to brain damage and death. It is real.

But overall as a society we don't limit the amount of water people drink.

Just remembered my DM develped thrombocytopenia from Heparin after an operation, they had to put her on a very expensive alternative drug, but she never had it from her vaccines

Thrombocytopenia

It's like most vaccine reactions , the vaccine gives a lower risk from this side effect than the actual diseases do.

"Even though it is important to highlight that ITP can be caused by MMR vaccination, the incidence of ITP following vaccination is significantly lower than the incidence of the condition following the infections prevented by this vaccine. Consequently, post-MMR vaccine ITP should not limit the universal MMR vaccination of children."

Severe Immune Thrombocytopenia Following MMR Vaccination with Rapid Recovery: A Case Report and Review of Literature

There are over 4000 claims currently being processed by the vaccine damage scheme in the UK. Over 20 million has already been paid out for Covid jabs alone.

I'm still pro vaccination but having experience of it as a family I'm no longer dismissive of the concerns some people have.
