Wow. What a shock

Shock wears off very quickly when it's someone you don't know personally only publicly. Then the gossip, speculation, lampooning, derision, annoyance about their circumstances (Royals) compared to mere mortals steps in. Inevitable.

I've always thought that the late Queen (gossiping again...) was quite cruel and selfish to carry on and on and on as she did, denying her son the opportunity to grow into the role and give us all a new face on the pound while he was a bit younger.

Abdication could have been re worded to Active Retirement or some such fudge. They seem to be able to do what they like, (Queen Camilla's title anyone), so it could have been done with dignity and I doubt anyone would have had an issue with it, but no.

I don't think she liked him very much actually.

NoOrdinaryMorning · 07/02/2024 09:32

I've never forgiven him or that awful Camilla, for what was done to Diana BUT I wouldn't wish Cancer on anyone. Not nice.

Have the statistics always been that? Has it risen in recent years? It seems to be everywhere now when in the past decades you didn't hear so much. Is this a lifestyle thing, eating crap, drink, drugs, smoking or people living longer? Combination of both I think! I know several people with paranoid health anxiety that seems to be getting worse.

Well my friend used to work in cancer research and the stats used to be 1 in 3 and now they say 1 in 2. She explained it to me as generally now people are living longer, things that used to kill people, we’ve got ways of treating, curing, preventing or even extending life, so Mr Joe Bloggs that 70 years ago would’ve died of a heart attack at 65 now would survive but perhaps get cancer at 75.

there are obviously life style factors too like the increase of obesity and smoking related cancers

I'm not surprised people have health anxiety tbh, we are overloaded with multiple public health campaigns on cancer, and forums like this one (and the internet in general) don't help either - post about an itchy toe on mumsnet and I guarantee at least one person will pop up to tell you they don't want to scare you but they had that and it was terminal cancer.

I’m not shocked, 50% of us will get cancer in the UK, he is in his 70s and he is just flesh and blood like the rest of us.
He is fortunate in that he will have the best doctors and the best treatment possible and it’s not going to kill him any time soon.

LINDAHOAD · 07/02/2024 08:00

yes there is treatment abroad which he will have access to but unfortnately many have to raise their own funds to obtain, the nhs is not sustainable in its present form and needs radical reform -

They said its nothing to do with his prostrate, the cancer was picked up,when he was being investigated for his enlarged prostrate, and they spotted the cancer somewhere else,he is now having treatment for it and it was caught early.

niadainud · 07/02/2024 04:36

(The age of the person being diagnosed, in case that's not obvious...)

niadainud · 07/02/2024 04:35

I think the contention here rests on the definition of the word "shocking" and whether you take it to mean a) finding something upsetting, or b) being surprised.

It's understandable to find anyone's cancer diagnosis upsetting, but it surely becomes less shocking with increasing age. That's just statistics, not any measure of empathy.

doilooklikeicare · 07/02/2024 00:51

@mayorofcasterbridge you're confusing empathy and shock or you're on a wind up?

@mayorofcasterbridge are you confusing shock with empathy... do you understand the difference?

How condescending can you be???!

Of course I understand the difference, I am an intelligent, educated, empathetic woman!!

Luckily my faith in people isn't shaken. I've known for years that some people are just horrible.

There’s nothing wrong with being shocked.

There’s nothing wrong with not being shocked.

Yes, of course I would. I am a decent, sentient human being.

I was shocked when my father died aged 81, because it was also unexpected!

Should I not have been? Is there something wrong with you? Because I don't think it's me....!!

Being shocked about your father passing away is normal, most of us would be.

However, 75 year old Dave from the pub getting cancer is not shocking. We wish him well, and good luck. But that’s about it.

MidnightSerenader · 07/02/2024 00:01

Honestly - why do people give a shit who is, or isn’t, shocked?!?

I was shocked when an 81YO family friend with diagnosed with a brain and spine tumour. Am I stupid to be so, given her age? Well, so what…? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Likewise, if people aren’t shocked by the King’s diagnosis, it doesn’t mean they’re psychopaths.

Such silly stuff to quibble about…
