Wow. What a shock

England's obsession.... it's not a hive mind, all manner of views are expressed.

You wouldn't give it a second thought? Lovely.

To most people he's just a man on TV? Are there threads about every man on TVs cancer diagnosis? Of course not. Whilst lots of us are no longer bothered by the monarchy, I really think you've simplified it by suggesting they're just like anyone on the TV. They're an institution. They're clearly much more than just famous people, to most people. Whether that's in a positive way or not.

To be honest the poster hit the nail on the head to most people they are people we see on TV . I'll say from the start I'm Scottish and I find it hard to get to grips England's obsession with the royals . I've never got it when I see people say online God save the King/Queen . It comes across as funny ,I've never met a Scottish person who chats about them . I was an armed forces wife so though they didn't feature in much conversations . Photographs of her bloody everywhere though . And I had to toast her a few times , though I was a bit tippsy .

"Just a guy on TV"???? Staggered!!

What, like someone on EastEnders or Corrie?

I...don't...think...so....!!

He's more like a celebrity.

So what exactly did you do about the thousands who passed away today? What will you be doing tomorrow? What are your expectations?

They're clearly much more than just famous people

Well, not to everyone. I would classify them in the same category as celebrities on TV like others have said i.e. George Michael, Freddie Mercury, MJ etc etc.

So you telling someone who is shocked that people are shocked that it is wrong to decide what people are shocked about...

Who are you to decide whether people are shocked or not?

This is just tedious.

I did not tell anyone that they should be shocked.

I have the right to be shocked or not as I wish.

Now leg it.

What an odious post.

You haven't got the fucking faintest clue what I was doing when Diana, Princess of Wales died. I don't speak in that ridiculous pseudo-accent you have attempted badly to use. Neither am I a sycophant. I am a decent-thinking person who sees the best in people where I can.

Your accepting of a public holiday for a royal death as a republican is utterly, totally hypocritical.

The manner in which you have addressed me is indicative of your character. Not impressed.

I'm not shocked now but initially I was, as were my adult children who have no interest in the RF.

Broaden your mind a little.

My dad's 75. Does that make his life less worthy? If he dies soon, should I expect everyone to just nod when I tell them my dad passed?

You've misunderstood my point.

It does not make his life less worthy to your family, friends and the people around you. They will not just nod as you say.

However, if I passed you on the street and you told me this news. I'll feel sorry and sad for your loss, and hope you guys get through it. But, after we have that conversation I will nod and go about my day and not give it a second thought - because I don't know you or your father. The day after I won't even remember the conversation.

It's the same with King Charles, to most of us, he's just a guy on TV.

I'm not into the monarchy but I was shocked at his diagnosis and I truly hope he's ok, although Harry's swift visit and the lack of information about which cancer it is it's likely terminal or advanced. I know he's 75, but it's still really sad for him and his family and loved ones.

Humanity and kindness is free, try it 😊

I hope your dad has a long and happy life.

I am sick to death of the ageism constantly displayed on this site. All of the elder haters will be older themselves one day too if they are lucky.

I don't think Charles's cancer is advanced or terminal. Rishi Sunak said that it was caught early.

I agree about the humanity and kindness though, very much so. There's a sad lack of it on here sometimes. People are horrible.

Shock wears off very quickly when it's someone you don't know personally only publicly. Then the gossip, speculation, lampooning, derision, annoyance about their circumstances (Royals) compared to mere mortals steps in. Inevitable.

I've always thought that the late Queen (gossiping again...) was quite cruel and selfish to carry on and on and on as she did, denying her son the opportunity to grow into the role and give us all a new face on the pound while he was a bit younger.

Abdication could have been re worded to Active Retirement or some such fudge. They seem to be able to do what they like, (Queen Camilla's title anyone), so it could have been done with dignity and I doubt anyone would have had an issue with it, but no.

I don't think she liked him very much actually.

It does wear off quickly. Maybe it would be more accurate in retrospect to say, it was a shock. An OMG or holy fuck moment.

No, I am not a rabid royalist as I have been accused. To me bad news is a shock. Like when George Michael died, or Freddie Mercury.

The Queen was dedicated to her role. I think Charles knew and understood that. She made a promise to the nation and was determined to be a woman of her word. It would have been so much easier I am sure for her to disappear off into the sunset and see her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and spend time out in nature with her horses and dogs.

She was neither cruel nor selfish. She believed it was her responsibility to rule until she died. She was selfless rather. She could have chosen to make her life easier and more enjoyable, especially when she became ill but her principles did not allow her to do that. I think she was admirable. She was sharp right until the end, as Boris Johnson said of her two days before her death.

I think she and Charles had a very loving relationship in later life. It seems it was difficult for him as a child because his parents were remote and away a lot. However it appears the whole family became closer as a whole as they all got older.

I really don’t understand why. An old man in his mid-70s has cancer. I mean, I wish him well, and I hope he recovers. If he doesn’t, it’s sad, but I think most people will just go about their day and put Netflix on.

I don’t think anyone is ‘shocked’?

Has anyone come on and said ‘the King has cancer - I’m shocked!’

It’s just big news, what with him being head of state of many countries. 🤷🏻‍♀️

It's in the actual OP!!! Dear god.

LOTS of people were shocked. It was unexpected?

If I had a 90 year old granny, which sadly I don't, and she was diagnosed with cancer, it would still be a shock.

What is wrong with people? So many people so utterly lacking in understanding!

I’m shocked that people are shocked. It’d be shocking if he were young I suppose. But he’s not. What did they say, 1000 people get diagnosed with cancer in the uk every day. So no, it’s doesn’t count as shocking.

I've never forgiven him or that awful Camilla, for what was done to Diana BUT I wouldn't wish Cancer on anyone. Not nice.

Oh FGS move on, get over it.

It was a long time ago. Bitterness and hate aren't a good look.

It's not as if they did something to you personally, plus Diana was no angel either!

Agree with @couiza
She was quite the National Treasure in her final years, but for most of her reign she came across as a rather icy and formal woman with a fixation on the role.

What a crock!

Blimey he did well to get an appointment so quickly and see the specialists. The usual serfs have to wait ages.
Prince Andrew next in line.
Do we get a day off work, i hope so.
😁ABOLISH THE MONARCHY

Would it not compromise your anti-royalism to accept a day off in I assume you mean the event of the King dying? Such fucking double standards!!!

HelenaCh9 · 07/02/2024 16:20

I’m not a royalist, far from, but to defend the old Queen a little bit, she had a very very strong faith and believed that her god would decide when enough was enough ie her death. I think that abdication would have been unthinkable. The divine right and that.

I do think that Charles, although a church goer, seems more pragmatic and progressive and won’t go the way she did, struggling on to the bitter end.

Not saying that people of religion are not pragmatic/progressive btw! I know plenty who are. Just referring to the Queen stance on this particlr topic.

TbH though most people who get a diagnosis of cancer at his age actually die of something else first, as it's normally less aggressive in older people.

As he'll get the best possible care, he's still likely to live some time yet.

This certainly rings true with my DF. He was grappling with recurring bladder cancer at about the age KC is now. It was worrying at the time but believe me now at the age of 90 he’s got other fish to fry.

yes there is treatment abroad which he will have access to but unfortnately many have to raise their own funds to obtain, the nhs is not sustainable in its present form and needs radical reform -

Is sandalwood the treatment or your sign off?
