Solidarity for those of us who hate Spring

I've had a thread on here before about this and found it really useful as there's no one in real life who doesn't look at me in horror if I even mention this.
You know how people have SAD when the nights draw in , I have it the other way round. This morning, the birdsong by me set me off. Its like a sense of dread. I think it's to do with change. I don't cope well with change generally, I have anxiety made worse by peri menopause so I think moving from something you know well and feel happy with (the dark nights) into something new makes me feel a bit unsettled . Are you the same? Want to chat about it?

Oh, you're not that bad. 😁

Is it the inconsistency you find difficult. As in one day you are wrapped up in a big, warm coat, hat, scarf, gloves. The next it’s much warmer and you suddenly feel uncomfortable in those clothes? I can understand that.
Ive made a conscious effort these past months to embrace the seasons.
So if it’s cold I make sure I’m appropriately dressed.
Once spring is fully here I’ll swap my clothes and out will come my summer/spring clothes.
It’s my way if coping as I’m the opposite and love summer especially.
Bring on the warm/hot weather is my motto.
Can you find something to enjoy about spring? Easter celebrations, spring flowers, eating pancakes and chocolate (is that spring?) Buy yourself some tulips or daffodils maybe.

Springs not too bad for me, I detest summer and already starting to dread it. Autumn starts to get things better and winter is the best

100%. Autumn and winter are my happy months, but I dread a long, hot summer.

SunnieShine · 29/01/2024 07:42

crochetmonkey74 · 29/01/2024 06:08

Yep that's why I'm talking on here about it. No one in my real life gets it but I know it exists!

I get it @crochetmonkey74.

Spring is my least favourite season. Last night I was already thinking I can't wait for Autumn. I love the dark evenings.

I do like the really hot weather though.

Parfortheparsnip · 29/01/2024 07:37

Well you aren't the only one. The Wasteland by TS Eliot (my fave poem) begins 'April is the cruellest month, breeding lilacs out of the dead land, mixing memory and desire, stirring dull roots with spring rain.' So maybe you're destined to be a prize winning poet!

Yorkshiredolls · 29/01/2024 07:37

You hate birdsong and daffodils?

Thepeopleversuswork · 29/01/2024 07:35

This is a new one for me and tbh is the exact opposite of how I feel. I love spring. I love all the seasons to be honest just because I like observing the change.

I can sort of understand people who hate summer (though I love it personally) because of the discomfort element, but hating spring is very niche. What exactly is it which you don't like about birdsong?

Icantbedoingwithit · 29/01/2024 07:34

Yes I am totally with you on this OP. I feel the same. Prepare to have your arse handed to you though and be told you are a weirdo or you are depressed because you have a preference. People get so riled up over others not liking Spring or Summer and the days getting lighter. It’s bizarre. I couldn’t care less who likes the warmer months. I am a Winter girl and that’s ok.

Effitall · 29/01/2024 07:34

I feel exactly the same OP.

DappledThings · 29/01/2024 07:33

I prefer Spring to Summer. But I don't like it getting lighter. I find it unsettling and irritating when it's light past about 7pm and as soon as we hit January it feels like that's round the corner. I always get a twinge of sadness on the Winter solstice and the opposite on the Summer solstice.

MurielThrockmorton · 29/01/2024 07:28

People who get cluster headaches often find that the change of seasons, spring and autumn, is a trigger. This may be due to something going on in the hypothalamus of the brain, which regulates various body systems, so there may be a physical physiological basis for it.

ReverseSAD · 29/01/2024 07:28

Does anyone get SAD in reverse? www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/4525012-Does-anyone-get-SAD-in-reverse

WhatNoRaisins · 29/01/2024 07:28

I think I like autumn so much because I hate the heat of summer and the feeling of being slathered in sunscreen. I'll avoid going out in the open if I can.

That "fresh start" feeling lots of people describe in January hits me in September instead when it gets cool enough for me to want to go out and do things.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 29/01/2024 07:27

I hear you OP,I don't like this part of the year either- clock changes, early waking because of the blasted birds, means summer is on its way which means terrible hay fever. It's like SAD in reverse.

ReverseSAD · 29/01/2024 07:26

There is a whole thread on this! You should read.

the80sweregreat · 29/01/2024 07:24

I dread summer and heat and just want to wish it away. Spring isn't too bad ,but I've never been a fan of summer time

FunOverload · 29/01/2024 07:24

I have this too op. For me Autumn and Winter feel safer as by the evening we are all settled indoors keeping warm and I look forward to being cozy in bed. Some people will find that boring but I like there being more routine.

Spring and summer however, I find are more exposing as dc will be out in the garden playing til dusk, we will be out more In the evenings going for walks and bbq etc. Eldest will want to be out longer with friends. In the warmest months I will dread bedtime as we get too hot and uncomfortable.

Dc and Dp love all things summer but I'm the complete opposite.

Also for me my allergies will kick in and I'll be miserable about that.

I've always been this way even as a child.

BogRollBOGOF · 29/01/2024 07:23

DS hates bird song. Really hates it. When he gets up and moans about the birds, you know it's going to be a long, draining day of autistic sensory overwhelm and he's going to complain about everything.

I'm not a winter lover, but one of my small consolations of Jan/ Feb is that all the leaves have been blasted off the trees so the views are at their most open, and you briefly get peeps of views that you don't get March- December.

August is a weird month. It feels like summer gets stuck. It tends to be humid, and nature seems to pause. You notice that you're past the longest days (so draws attention to the slog ahead), it's the wettest, most overcast summer month on average, and summer looks tired. Plus no routines from term time. I prefer September when a freshness returns and nature prepares for its finale and peps up again.

At the weekend I felt relief at the lengthening days. It was light enough to go for a walk at 4pm and actually use the afternoon rather than finding it dark mid-afternoon with fuck all of interest to do to fill the 6+ hours until bed time. The mud is drying out too; it looks like I can now get off tarmac and actually move across the fields after over 3 months since the floods.

deplorabelle · 29/01/2024 07:20

BatshitCrazyWoman · 29/01/2024 06:56

The OP is not 'weird' 🙄 FFS. It's definitely a thing. I love autumn and winter, spring is okay, not a fan of summer and it makes me feel quite low. I mostly just ignore it, and all the jolly people telling me summer is wonderful 😂 At least I enjoy three quarters of the year, unlike the summer worshippers 😂

Oh yes totally agree. Sun worshipper types bitch non-stop about the cold and the dark but if you dare to say you're not a fan of being frizzled alive by the beating sun you are "wishing the lovely weather away" and "being a misery." There are a couple of people now that I am deliberately insensitive to when they complain about the cold (which they do incessantly) because they've been horrible to me so often about me feeling the heat.

I hate the heat and to some extent the relentless brightness of summer and did use to dread spring so I completely understand OP. As I always say on these threads, I got myself into gardening deliberately as a way of making myself like summer and to some extent it's worked. I actually feel excited about spring now and only get summer dread when we actually get there.

Samsond · 29/01/2024 07:16

"I am at my happiest. I find the need to be active and living my best life because it’s March-Aug really annoying."

You don't need to be active or "living your best life" at all. Just spend your days how you like!

You're not the first person I've heard say this sort of thing and I just don't get it. If you don't want to do something then don't.

I mean I hate having to do stuff in winter, in the dark, like ferry my kids round to clubs and stuff but I'm doing the same stuff in summer when it's light so there's no real change there (except in how pleasant it is)

WinchSparkle80 · 29/01/2024 07:13

I am with you OP but then Sept-Feb I am at my happiest. I find the need to be active and living my best life because it’s March-Aug really annoying.
I like dark mornings and nights, it’s calmer and quieter.

WhatNoRaisins · 29/01/2024 07:13

It's the most awkward of the seasonal transitions I think. The others seem more gradual, this is like a tedious wait mixed with a rude awakening.

The reason I hate this time of the year is that I'm losing patience with the dark mornings, it seems to take ages before they get lighter and then the clocks have to go forward. I'm not fussed about lighter evenings at all and soon get fed up of them in the summer months.

crochetmonkey74 · 29/01/2024 07:09

Re the transition it is that. The transition into spring feels exposing , everything gets bigger and more open somehow. The transition form.spring to summer is minimal other than Jean (in my perception) the transitions into autumn and winter get smaller, more cosy.
That's how it is in my brain

Passthecake30 · 29/01/2024 07:09

I love spring and summer. Windows and doors wide open, long evenings, washing on the line. Though I go into it dreading my chronic hayfever and the 4am day light!

crochetmonkey74 · 29/01/2024 07:07

sorrynotathome · 29/01/2024 07:03

“Sept is my favourite time of the year and I love Christmas so the change into autumn winter is great for me.
Spring into summer seems to flow, so I only really get it at the start of spring.
What's weird is I don't hate summer, I enjoy holidays and sitting outside . I like the warm weather. Its just the transitions I can't cope with”

I don’t get it - you can’t cope with the transitions but the change into autumn winter is great and spring into summer seems to flow? So really it’s not the transitions at all, just the thought of it becoming Spring (because it’s nowhere near Spring yet)?

I don't think it matters if you 'get it'
It's just how I feel. The first signs of spring coming are definitely here where I are. The days are lengthening, the birdsong is back and louder, the bulbs are poking up. These are all signs that a change is happening.
