I've had a thread on here before about this and found it really useful as there's no one in real life who doesn't look at me in horror if I even mention this.
You know how people have SAD when the nights draw in , I have it the other way round. This morning, the birdsong by me set me off. Its like a sense of dread. I think it's to do with change. I don't cope well with change generally, I have anxiety made worse by peri menopause so I think moving from something you know well and feel happy with (the dark nights) into something new makes me feel a bit unsettled . Are you the same? Want to chat about it?

I feel like this too OP. I love autumn and winter. I hate it when the clocks change and we have light nights. It really unsettles me and I don't sleep well until they change back again in October.
Makes me laugh how the people who suffer through the winter couldn't possibly comprehend how anyone can feel this the other way and have to derail the thread with it! If you don't feel that way, just let this be a supportive thread for those who do.

Rockshore · 29/01/2024 09:11

I find it a bit depressing that so many people hate parts of the year this much. I used to dislike January then I decided it was pointless wishing away 1/12 of the time I have left in life so I’ve done my best to embrace it. I can’t help thinking it’s a bit of a non-problem tbh.

Branster · 29/01/2024 09:10

I must confess it never crossed my mind that there would be anyone in the world not liking spring. My favourite season (I really like all of them for various reasons).
So this has been an eye opener for me.

It's not nice to call people weird if they experience things in different ways.

But then again, I suspect I am the ultimate weirdo because I absolutely detest chocolate and most chocolatey things. I cannot comprehend at all how do so many people (everyone of all ages) claim to love or crave chocolate.

ThePerfectDog · 29/01/2024 09:06

Although I feel very differently I get where you’re coming from. Winter is about hibernating and nurturing yourself, shutting everything away (and in nature rebuilding ready for the new year). Spring opens everything out again it’s very exposing and I think particularly those who lean towards anxiety or low mood (not saying this is you, OP) it can feel awkward, uncomfortable and unpleasant.

I’m totally the opposite, I find winter depressing and constraining, the sound of the birds and the drier / warmer weather makes me so happy.

TheSlantedOwl · 29/01/2024 08:58

Yeah the ‘weirdos’ are the posters astonished to learn that some people feel differently about some things 🙄

They’re reminding me of an old French and Saunders sketch: “I don’t understand it therefore I don’t like it!”

OP I don’t feel this way, but I have a friend who feels this about summer. I wonder if it’s connected to losing the cosy hibernation of winter where you feel protected and enclosed?

Don't be so spiteful

New2024 · 29/01/2024 08:52

Slightly different for me. I don’t dislike Spring weather or even Summer if the heat isn’t humid. I do dislike long days though. I’m a Summer birthday quite near the longest day but when it’s light until nearly 10, I really dislike that.

I am not with you about hating Spring. However, given your comment about change, there is one thing where I hope we could find common ground. I would not put clocks back in winter, I'd like BST all year round. Even GMT year round for me would be preferable to what we have now.

I would happily have GMT year round. BST year round would be horrible for me

NewYearNameChanger · 29/01/2024 08:50

Spring is my least favourite time of year, I find it so insipid!

CatamaranViper · 29/01/2024 08:48

DS suffers so badly from hayfever so when spring first comes I know hayfever season I'm nearly here and we're back to daily battles for eye drops and medicine.

Ronathediva13 · 29/01/2024 08:45

I love Spring, probably my favourite time of year. It gives me hope for a lovely warm summer which is inevitably a disaster with a week or so of unbearable heat surrounded by months of rain. I find Autumn utterly depressing as a result as I feel cheated out of a lovely summer!

Team ‘cozy’ is back! lol. Now crying about ‘dreading’, ‘warm weather and light mornings in the UK…in January. Not long before these threads appear on the day the clocks go back in late October. Looong eye roll.

Was waiting for this! So predictable, always slams out the word cosy! 😂

polkadotpeppermint · 29/01/2024 08:41

I used to work for a mental health charity. Reverse SAD is not uncommon - loads of people feel this way.

crochetmonkey74 · 29/01/2024 08:36

theduchessofspork · 29/01/2024 08:16

If you are anxious generally I think that makes sense - winter traditionally is about hunkering down, summer is about getting out and doing stuff. There are also a lot of expectations about summer in terms of having a good time, holidays, seeing people.

So I am guessing the pulse is to do with the coming of that pressure?

General gratitude lists provably aren’t going to help in this case -,but perhaps reframing summer to be what you want them to be might help?

No it's not about the pressure. I have lovely summers. I've just booked a great holiday , I enjoy warm weather a lot.
I'm not trying to be ornery and disagree with everything but it is unconnected to amy tangible reason like pressure. Its just an undercurrent of unease

OP posts:
SpringHexagon · 29/01/2024 08:35

I don't dread the Spring really, I'm not a big Summer person though, I hate when it's too hot and I can't cool down. But like you I really don't mind the dark mornings and nights which seems to be unusual when speaking to people in every day life.

Ginmonkeyagain · 29/01/2024 08:30

Sounds like you find change unsettling rather than Spring per se. Spring in Northern Europe is very unpredicable - you can get very mild sunny weather in February and snow storms in April.

The reason people find you hating Spring odd, is it is hard wired in to our monkey brains to look forward Spring - it means the end of hard seasons of dark, cold, hunger and possible death for the weaker members of society. Liking Winter is a comfortable modern privilege.

OldTinHat · 29/01/2024 08:29

My support worker was gushing how everything will start getting better now spring is on its way. I looked at her in horror and said I hate spring and summer! She was most confused.

Longer days and better weather brings much more pressure to look good, to socialise, to go out. When it's dark and bad weather, you can hunker down and be all cosy at home, candles lit, insence burning...

My favourite day is 21st June because the days start getting shorter again and when the clocks go back is just fantastic!

socks1107 · 29/01/2024 08:24

Yes I feel like this, I don't particularly like spring. I get quite down in spring and have for a number of years now

RampantIvy · 29/01/2024 08:22

ithinkthatmaybeimdreaming · 29/01/2024 06:12

Nope, I've got to the age of 64 and have never heard of anyone who feels like this.

Ypu haven't been on mumsnet long enough. Loads of mumsnetters hate the better weather and longer days.

I have never met anyone in real life who prefers winter though.

I'm the opposite to you @crochetmonkey74 but we have had so much rain this autumn and winter that I am getting cabin fever. And before I get lectured about there is no such thing as the wrong weather, just the wrong clothes, I have the right clothes, but I get no pleasure from walking in horizontal rain. As a glasses wearer it makes it difficult for me to see as well.

I see that once you get over the bump of spring that you enjoy summer. It won't last for long. I just hope we get a better summer than last year.

IHateSpring · 29/01/2024 08:20

'DonnaBanana
We’re only a month into winter! Spring isn’t until March.

Thanks for the telling off. Its about the signs of transition, not the literal date of spring'

I know exactly what you mean Op. for some reason whenever you post anything on here there's always scores of people waiting in the wings to pick everything you say apart - even when it's your own personal feelings!

I would go back to bed and get out the right side this time, if I were you.

crochetmonkey74 · 29/01/2024 08:11

Yup agreed.i like all those things. My feeling is a sense of dread about the changeover though. I can't think it away or do gratitude lists etc (have tried) it's just like a pulse underneath this time of year

Zanatdy · 29/01/2024 08:16

I can understand why you feel like that and I’m sure you’re not alone. I kind of like the early nights of winter as I go to bed early and that’s hard when it’s light outside: I think sometimes I do feel like I should do more when it’s light outside but I’m now in a walking club and can’t wait for the light evenings as I feel so much better for going out walking some evenings

mynameiscalypso · 29/01/2024 08:15

I like winter and summer. I get very anxious in spring and autumn because they seem more transitional and the change makes be feel unsettled. It's nothing to do with light/temp or anything like that. I have discussed it with my psych who said it wasn't as common is traditional SAD but it was still a recognised 'thing'
