To be sick of vapes everywhere

I can’t seem to go anywhere these days without a white cloud of disgusting candy flavoured vapour being blown in my face. It’s gotten to a point where I truly believe that it’s worse than smoking - at least most smokers are well aware that it’s an anti-social behaviour and do it away from other people, and outdoors! With vapers there seem to be absolutely no boundaries or thought that not everyone wants to be covered in their chemical smoke.

Absolutely horrible habit that’s catching on to far too many young children. A ban can’t come soon enough - even my 19 year old DD is sick of her friends being addicted to them. They’re like dummies in some cases, never out of their mouths!

Yes, but a large number of the younger people who are vaping are not previous smokers so that theory doesn't really work.

I doubt if anyone approves of children vaping. As far as I know, vapes are not allowed by law to be sold to children. And, again as far as I know, vaping is prohibited by law or policy in most places that smoking is banned.

If children are the concern, the law should be enforced and parents should do their part.

But that’s not what the OP is complaining about. She wants vapes banned for adults too. Because she doesn’t like the smell.

As someone said upthread, why ban vaping for adults? If it’s just about occasional nuisance, there are many other things ahead in the queue.

Better a vape than cigarette smoke.

watch Big Vape: The Rise and Fall of JUUL on netflix. Shows how addictive it is and damaging. Numerous young people in hospital. It's in the documentary. Scary stuff.

There used to be cigarettes shops. Could buy single cigarettes back then. Sold loose tobacco, exotic cigarettes, pipes and cigars.

There's definitely at least a tobacco shop and a cigar shop in Belfast.

Buggerthislove · 26/01/2024 07:56

I have a colleague that chain smoked when wfh over lockdown and swapped to vaping recently, she's always on it when in the office as she carries it round in a pocket, we're banned from smoking and vaping on site but she still does it, multiple 'smoke' breaks and vaping adhoc 'by accident' is winding us all up but she's saying she feels bullied if it's brought up by management.
Everyone else manages to stick to the correct breaks and keep them I'm their coats but not her.
I hate the things being everywhere.

To those who think vaping is safe for kids.... you have no clue what they're vaping. They pass vapes around in the bathrooms at school with no idea what's in there. Some vape shops are selling kids illegal substances including 'spice' which absolutely does lead to hospital admissions and even death. DC at school have had seizures due to it. You have no idea what your DC are vaping.

I also know of a DC who was admitted with severe pneumonia and vaping was thought to be an aggrevating factor.

I detest vapes and absolutely wish they had never been invented. They look and smell ridiculous, are catastrophic for the environment, are deliberately marketed to children (how many adults choose gummy bear flavour?) and have led to DC unwittingly vaping illegal substances. Theyve got a whole generation of DC hooked on nicotine, who otherwise wouldn't be, their parents don't know as the smell isn't as obvious as cigarette smoke on their clothes. There's nothing good to be said for them imo.

Watch the panorama show on teen vaping, it's very clear on health and financial impacts.

Edited

Thank you - someone speaking sense!

I hate them, they stink and people use them anti socially in shops and cafes and for some reason no one tells them to stop and go outside

But, I cant stand misinformation. We have this at work, with people trying to scare monger kids to stop by telling them about these so called hospitalisations.

I work with kids and they get admitted to hospital for all sorts of things which are dangerous, but vaping has never been one of those things. Yet.

TravelDazzle · 26/01/2024 07:16

I've just recently started vaping to help quit smoking. Must admit it's been great on that front with no cigarettes for 2 weeks. I'm careful not to suck on it constantly and make sure I go outside to vape and always stand away from other people (like I did when I was smoking cigarettes). I basically treat it like it's a cigarette and take care to watch where I'm doing it.

Not everyone who vapes is inconsiderate.

MrsMurphyIWish · 26/01/2024 07:16

I agree OP. Last year I went to the cinema and returned home with a horrendous headache as someone was vaping, releasing a sickly sweet odour. I did report to staff members but they couldn’t see who was vaping so didn’t do anything. Vapours are like how smokers used to be - as it’s seen as not harmful, they will vape anywhere.

I’m also a teacher and agree what vaping is out of control.

questionsconfusion · 26/01/2024 07:09

Apparently they get hold of them online somehow. I hope they get on top of it. Problem is because of it containing nicotine they will feel the after effects of addiction if/when they stop. Hopefully they put a service in to support the children with this.

questionsconfusion · 26/01/2024 07:08

Really sets my asthma off so hate it. People seem more ignorant that they did with cigarettes. Cigarettes do the same. Child's school is full of them and school try and catch kids vaping but they always find hiding places. Horrible things.

Do you think Public Health England was made up of avid vapers?

Considering you seem to jump on to every anti-vape thread to defend it I think my point has been proven. Public Health England aren’t here commenting, you are.

Yes from standard vapes! It's called "popcorn lung" I believe. You're basically putting additional fluid on your lungs, it's really bad.

House! 😂

Popcorn Lung:

2000 - case study on eight workers in a popcorn factory who developed severe respiratory illness (bronchiolitis obliterans). A correlation is found with their exposure to high levels of diacetyl in popcorn flavourings. A causative mechanism is neither sought nor found and no other potential correlations, e.g. with other ingredients in popcorn flavourings, are discussed.

https://www.nejm.org/doi/full/10.1056/NEJMoa020300

2015 - study finds diacetyl in some but not all eliquids and cites earlier 'popcorn lung' study. The authors fail to mention the fact that cigarettes contain 750 times the amount of diacetyl as vapes, or the fact that our hospitals are not stuffed full of smokers with 'popcorn lung'.

https://tobaccoanalysis.blogspot.com/2015/12/new-study-finds-that-average-diacetyl.html

Out of an abundance of caution, since May 2016 when the TPD was made part of UK law, there has been no diacetyl in any legally sold eliquid in the UK or EU.

Multiple young friends of DD (all heavy vapers) have ended up in hospital because of it in recent years.

Really? From standard vapes?

From the reports I've read the hospitalisations from 'vaping' have all been linked to 'vaping' cannabis oils not standard water based vape liquids. Of course inhaling heating oils direct to your lungs will cause harm, but standard vape liquids don't contain oils.

Why must they be banned? Every bloody day there’s somebody on here wanting something banned.

You can choose not to use them, not to allow them in your house and you can ask people not to vape around you but beyond that, mind your own business.

Awful for the environment, being used more and more by literal children due to irresponsible companies marketing them with fun flavours, acting as a gateway to smoking.. need I go on?

When your teenager’s friends all have smoker’s coughs (despite never smoking) get back to me on that one! 2 ending up in hospital over it is 2 too many.

I’m assuming that you also want alcohol banned? Fair few people end up in hospital because of that, too.

I hate vapes and their environmental impact,
I live in a weird town centre location and we regularly have disposable vapes dumped over our fence. I walk to the shops and I have to walk through a cloud of vape. The worst was when I was driving down the motorway and wondered what the strange smell in the car was until I spotted the vape stream from the car in front.

And then it became “Both...from years of heavy vaping”.

And I’m a ‘strange person’ for doubting your original story? Okey-dokey.

It is weird how vaping (god knows what's in them, especially the huge variety and range that's on sale) has completely taken over smoking (as far as I can see) so I guess it's worked.
Not sure how many smokers there would be these days, it was beginning to look so out-dated, expensive & considered so anti-social - but there must be more capers than ex-smokers we can agree on that?

I wonder what the argument for vaping will be when smoking will be outlawed (we'll be all AI or living in the meta verse by then I suppose....)

WhatsTheUseOfWorrying · 26/01/2024 00:03

MaloneMeadow · 25/01/2024 23:00

Nowhere on this thread am I suggesting that it is highly dangerous, what I am saying is that we don’t yet know the long term effects.

Both girls ended up in hospital with severe pneumonia, which respiratory consultants believed to be linked to lung inflammation from years of heavy vaping. Believe it’s made up if you want… strange person
