To be sick of vapes everywhere

I can’t seem to go anywhere these days without a white cloud of disgusting candy flavoured vapour being blown in my face. It’s gotten to a point where I truly believe that it’s worse than smoking - at least most smokers are well aware that it’s an anti-social behaviour and do it away from other people, and outdoors! With vapers there seem to be absolutely no boundaries or thought that not everyone wants to be covered in their chemical smoke.

Absolutely horrible habit that’s catching on to far too many young children. A ban can’t come soon enough - even my 19 year old DD is sick of her friends being addicted to them. They’re like dummies in some cases, never out of their mouths!

Diacetyl is banned in standard UK vapes though.

It is in regulated TPD compliant e-liquid.

The concern is all those black market disposables being sold to teenagers 'under the counter' at certain corner shops.

RMNofTikTok · 26/01/2024 11:25

We don’t yet know the long term effects of vaping, so that is questionable at the minute. Multiple young friends of DD (all heavy vapers) have ended up in hospital because of it in recent years.

Source - trust me

Exactly, OP. They used to promote cigarettes as being healthy before they realised they cause cancer

We have a lot more science these days and long-term effects have been studied. They have been around since 2003, there are plenty of people who have vaped for over a decade.

I'm a chronic asthmatic who was also a smoker for many years, yes that's dumb but peer pressure was intense, I was easily led and my more serious addictions were the priority back then. Regular chest infections and hospitalisations even before I started smoking tobacco, I've been close to death a fair few times.

Since I started vaping every single negative symptom has gone and my lungs are in the best shape ever going on on my peak flow. I tried every nicotine-replacement therapy going and none hit the spot like a vape.

I never vape around others though and use unflavoured liquid as the sweet sugary ones make me gag. Old fashioned rechargeable type with no discarded batteries, low wattage so not much smoke. I strongly disagree with the idea anyone should have to inhale my fumes, harmless or not. If you hold it long enough there isn't much anyway.

Basic respect for others from vapers would remove so many of the objections and reduce the multiple threads recently peddling the same old misinformation. It is a real pain for 'responsible' vapers that so many peers seem determined to annoy as many non-vapers as possible.

LOL. Putting that down on the List of Things That Didn’t Happen.

Yes, I have made up two of DD’s friends being admitted to hospital as I have nothing better to do with my life. Well done Sherlock! Get a grip.

Paw2024 · 26/01/2024 11:22

I think the ones that vape are ones that probably would have smoked anyway
So surely it's better they are trying vaping rather than the very real danger of smoking?
Admittedly it's not great but neither is drinking under age or sex or nudes on snapchats but teens are going to.. teen

I started smoking at 12 and yes I would have vaped if that was available
It would have been better for me to vape over the years than develop the 30 a day cigarette habit that I did
They're not a gateway to smoking because smoking is more expensive, more noticeable smell to parents.. lots of reasons

The ONLY reason I was able to quit smoking was a vape. If they were banned, I would still be smoking 30 a day and probably a bigger strain on the NHS

Your post said, The thought of breathing in someone else’s expelled breath is revolting

Expelled breath is expelled breath. Keep away from those panting joggers and cyclists!

Expelled breath and a vape cloud are not the same thing, and that’s a hill I’m prepared to die on.

FWIW, yes I do tend to avoid people panting over me. Not a fan of hot yoga because of it.

But that’s literally what you do all day every day. Are you going to stop breathing?

Regular breathing is very different to blowing out a cloud of thick, white, still warm and disgustingly sweet smelling smoke

OP posts:
PencilsInSpace · 26/01/2024 11:17

I believe that people vape way more than smoking.

It's more 'little and often' than smoking because the nicotine is absorbed differently. You don't get a big sharp hit like you do from a lit cigarette. Vapers generally absorb less nicotine than smokers, even those who use high power devices:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6657878/

If frequency of use is what we should worry about then we had better go after nicotine patch users. They are literally glued to the things 24/7!

‘Normal’ people don’t blow out a cloud of still warm, sweet smelling, thick and white smoke which seems to travel a huge distance. There’s a bit of a difference

if you think it's a lie that multiple young people can end up in hospital as a result of vaping, you should watch this documentary series on netflix:

Nowadays vapes have become a gateway drug to smoking

You’d have to stop people breathing to achieve that aim.

Where did I mention cancer? Nonetheless cigarettes and vapes contain harmful chemicals.

No, they don’t, and even if they did you wouldn’t get them from ‘passive vaping’.

I’m not saying there are absolutely no risks to vapers - although the evidence of harm seems very slight and speculative - but there are no risks to non-vapers.

JamJar59 · 26/01/2024 11:03

They are a mild annoyance but nothing in comparison to cigarettes or people smoking weed.

Not unreasonable though.

Whilst it is true that vaping is safer than smoking and there may be no long-term effects related to cancer and lung health (unknown) it is known that nicotine can negatively impact foetal growth and sperm count and motility so I think there are likely to be issues arising in the future from vaping.

Better tell the NHS then. They've been prescribing nicotine replacement to pregnant women for decades. They also support pregnant women using a vape to quit smoking.

I'd imagine that there is far more air pollution/emission coming from the millions of vehicles on our roads all day every day.

Until those who oppose vaping (without much to back it up mind), walk and cycle everywhere exclusively, there isn't much point in rabid (often unfounded) criticism of vape emissions.

Think about it. I do agree with three things though - ban fruit flavours -ban to children- ban disposables. However as a pp said, enforcement is a key factor. Talk is cheap.

I am a non vaper/smoker. Vaping doesn't bother me in the least. I am tolerant, I drive a big car so cannot be two faced about it.

To those who think vaping is safe for kids.... you have no clue what they're vaping. They pass vapes around in the bathrooms at school with no idea what's in there. Some vape shops are selling kids illegal substances including 'spice' which absolutely does lead to hospital admissions and even death. DC at school have had seizures due to it. You have no idea what your DC are vaping.

I also know of a DC who was admitted with severe pneumonia and vaping was thought to be an aggrevating factor.

I detest vapes and absolutely wish they had never been invented. They look and smell ridiculous, are catastrophic for the environment, are deliberately marketed to children (how many adults choose gummy bear flavour?) and have led to DC unwittingly vaping illegal substances. Theyve got a whole generation of DC hooked on nicotine, who otherwise wouldn't be, their parents don't know as the smell isn't as obvious as cigarette smoke on their clothes. There's nothing good to be said for them imo.

Watch the panorama show on teen vaping, it's very clear on health and financial impacts.

Edited

Being asthmatic and having asthmatic children I totally believe the person mentioning the children in hospital. It really is an issue for myself and my older child when others vape near. Tbf I do have triggers from cigarette smoke and perfume but breathing in second hand vape smoke is also disgusting.

I appreciate some adults may like the candy floss flavour but it is also appealing to children. The difficulty is children are buying it online and it's mixed with all sorts. It's terrifying. Thankfully my children haven't used it because it would make them seriously ill.

At least with cigarettes you could smell it and know when kids had used them. Also they were far more difficult to get hold of. The other disgusting thing is some young kids pick up disposed vapes off the floor. It really is a big issue.

They're vile. So sickly sweet. I hate smoking/vaping because you get forced to breathe in the second hand poison of inconsiderate people.

So inconvenience responsible adults instead of parents actually parenting their children

We've always inconvenienced responsible adults in order to protect children.

PencilsInSpace · 26/01/2024 10:49

Theyve got a whole generation of DC hooked on nicotine, who otherwise wouldn't be

The stats don't support this. The latest ASH survey shows that while there has been a marked uptick since 2021, only 3.7% of 11-17 y/o are regularly vaping.

It's also not true that vaping is acting as a gateway to smoking for children or that smoking is becoming cool again. The trend in youth smoking continues downwards.

(the 7.6% current use of vapes in the second graph is made up of both regular and occasional users but excludes those who have just tried it once or twice).
