I love soup and it's a staple in my home particularly in the winter. Today I made a thick root veg soup and we had it with crusty bread. It's just so quick and cheap to make and there are so many different options - thin, thick, meat, veg, spicy, creamy.............

Do you make/eat a lot of soup?
What are your favourites?

Our family staples are veg, minestrone, tomato, chicken and sweetcorn and leek and potato.

In France ‘eat your soup’ is the equivalent of ‘eat your greens’ in the U.K. It’s how you get children to eat vegetables.

Whats the recipe please as I always find kale overpowers soup
Any hints would be appreciated as greens are so good for us

Such as it is! Fry a roughly chopped onion. Throw in a handful of peeled potatoes cut up (this is really just a thickener) and a bag of kale, thick tough stems removed.

I then add some cloves of garlic, seasoning, Marigold stock and a tsp of chilli flakes. Cook until everything is soft then whizz up and add more salt /pepper if necessary.

Quantities are a bit vague I'm afraid as I rarely measure but you can be as heavy-handed with the garlic and chilli to your personal taste.

I WFH today because of the weather (roads looked awful and it's a 20 mile drive). DH WFH every day so at lunchtime we went to our local cafe where we had amazing cream of broccoli and cauliflower soup. Yesterday we had homemade tomato (I had roasted yellow stickered tomatoes with onion, garlic and mixed herbs and then blended it in veg stock - there's another 2 portions in the freezer).
I always have soup in the freezer. I want a healthy lunch at work and if I don't leave DH something, he will eat junk.
We ended up at MIL's on New Year's Day. My DM bought the steak pie and offered to make soup; she has a very sensitive sense of taste and her soup is tasteless so I said I would contribute the soup. I had some 15p bags of supermarket parsnips and apples from the garden so my contribution was parsnip and apple soup. I made a big pot so I have tubs in the freezer. MIL apparently hates parsnips but she loved my soup.

French onion soup with homemade garlic and herb croutons....😋

Equally carrot and red lentil soup with a little bit of cream swirled in...!

JMSA · 17/01/2024 22:24

Hmm, no. Give me a good sandwich over soup any day of the week!

I mean, I do like soup. But I'd struggle to see it as the main event.

Heinz Tomato - which I've never craved at any other point in my life - is what I lived on, when in recovery from a ferocious bout of Covid. Of course, with Warburtons white bread!

JamNittyGritty · 17/01/2024 22:22

Another soup lover here - although only started making my own fairly recently- love lentils and beans and my soups can often be more like stew.

Current faves are spiced carrot & red lentil, Squash bean & kale, minestrone.

Like the sound of spiced parsnip ones and sweet potato ones and may try those next

hby9628 · 17/01/2024 22:21

I absolutely love soup. Homemade over shop bought any day. I make a great carrot, courgette & lentil soup. I like the idea of sweet potato & coconut milk so think I'll try that one.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 17/01/2024 22:18

We eat soup for lunch all the time

  • lentil and bacon
  • leek & potato
  • tomato & red pepper
  • Cajun bean
  • tomato lentil
  • spring veg
  • buttery tomato with sweet potato

All on rotation.

thechangling · 17/01/2024 22:16

I love soup.

Does anyone have a good chicken soup recipe? I've not quite found my 'go to' one yet?

MouseMinge · 17/01/2024 22:15

I'm in the position of only being able to eat very soft foods at the moment and some of those can be problematic too. Soup is what keeps me going and I LOVE it. I loved it before but sometimes a tin of Baxter's cream of tomato soup is like the food of the gods to me. Also M&S lobster bisque which is the actual food of the goods. All that's missing is bread. I wish I could have bread but at least I can have soup!

I have to stop myself making spiced parsnip soup too much as I absolutely love it. My second favourite is Jerusalem artichoke.

not a fan of meat soups much.

Cheeky question but do you have a recipe- I really fancy spiced parsnip soup! ❤️

Isometimeswonder · 17/01/2024 22:13

I only like thick gloopy soup. My husband only likes brothy ones.
I know, LTB. 😆

MadCattery · 17/01/2024 22:13

I live in Florida, so just got home from work and threw together a pot of seafood chowder. It’s been colder than usual here and there’s nothing like a hot pot of soup! I love to make an “unstuffed pepper” soup, or chicken with gnocchi or chicken noodle. Funny that I had just sat down with a cup of chowder and saw this thread.

WoollyRosebud · 17/01/2024 22:13

Carrot and coriander is my current favourite.
Leek and potato is lovely too.
Soup is so easy and cheap to make and perfect in this cold weather.

herbetta · 17/01/2024 22:13

HM Celery Soup 🍲 is the best 👌

TiptoeTess · 17/01/2024 22:12

Pea & garlic and spicy corn chowder are my current go to faves; they’re so quick to make, brightly coloured, comforting, nutritious and delicious! Now just to stop eating great wedges of tiger bread and salty butter with them…

blackpanth · 17/01/2024 22:12

Love veg and chicken noodle soup 🍜

43ontherocksporfavor · 17/01/2024 22:11

I have some in my slow cooker to cook overnight for lunch tomorrow. All the veg and lentil.

Ownedbykitties · 17/01/2024 22:11

Yes! Soup is delicious! I make mine in a soup maker. Always have frozen veg ready so it's economical and easy. So warming in the winter or after a cold water swim Grin

TipulophobiaIsReal · 17/01/2024 22:11

Got to admit, I always have to hide that slight sinking of my heart that happens when someone says to me, "Soup okay for dinner?" Because, well, yeah, it's okay. But only okay. It always feels like a bit of a disappointment. A drink, when I was hoping for food. Filling up on carbs with a bit of flavouring to cheer it up, rather than a main event with a side of carbs. Stretching out ingredients and making up the difference with water and bread. A starter, filling in for a main. A single, generic, mingled flavour of nothing in particular, mouthful after mouthful. All these "…Oh. Okay" type of thoughts. It's entirely my hangup, I know. It's fine. Not every meal can be exciting to everyone.

(And I know there are many soups out there that flout one or more or all of these thoughts— these are just the feelings that always come to me when I hear "Soup okay?")

(It really doesn't help when you're gluten free, either.)

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 17/01/2024 22:11

My stick blender is my favourite gadget. This year so far I have made leek and potato, spiced parsnip, and carrot and sweet potato. We have so much snow here at the moment so the pot I made at the weekend has been very welcome!

notnowdennis · 17/01/2024 22:11

Massive soup fan and for the parsnip lovers… parsnip and apple is delicious! Made curried parsnip and swede soup with a bit of ginger last - that was good winter warmer. My fridge drawer always has random leeks and celery for soup making.
And I have a huge vat for cooking soup in!

Go to recipes:

curried parsnip
parsnip and apple
butternut squash and sage
roasted tomato (and red pepper)
broccoli and stilton
cauliflower cheese
watercress and potato
beetroot
lentil and bacon(or Facon)

best served with fresh scones or toasted pitta!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 17/01/2024 22:11

The one I don’t like it tomato soup

ClairDeLaLune · 17/01/2024 22:11

Celeriac soup 😋
