To ask if Donald Trump could actually be president again?

I've just seen a headline about him now being the front runner for the Republican nomination. Which I assume means it's entirely a possibility that he could then win.

I'm British (English) so I know our current government is a complete embarrassment. But I will never get my head around DT having been president once never mind possibly twice.

How could this happen??

I keep seeing this ridiculous extreme left trope all over the place - it’s ridiculous both in the US and UK contexts - in both nations the Overton window has shifted waaaaay to the right in the last 30 years

Biden and Starmer are very moderate and centrist.

Sanders and Corbyn were actually left wing and the Dems and Labour hated them for it.

Yank here. It's very early days in the election. In 2016, a bloke named Ted Cruise won the Republican Iowa primary. You've probably never heard of him because he went on to lose everywhere else.

Was it a similar landslide?

I guess we’ll see what the other states bring

Trump had a relationship with Putin and he was also strong enough to stand up to him (he is on record saying he would nuke Russia if they invaded). Ukraine was invaded around a year after Biden's inauguration. In my view this is no conincidence - Putin viewed Biden as weak. Biden's response to the growing threat in Ukraine then really was weak (he ignored it when he should have been acting as a diplomat and then committed to bringing ukraine into nato which was effectively the spark that started the current conflict). The US / Russian diplomatic relationship was much stronger when Trump was in power and I don't think he would have allowed that to happen (not the joining nato - all of the west is in support of that I think including Trump, but they way in which it was dealt with) also his relationship with kim jong un shows he is able to forge relationships.

The Russian situation is very frightening and needs real diplomatic intervention. I agree with sanctions but in the background the west (and predominantly america) should be seeking to resolve this conflict by diplomatic means. That is not going to be Biden - he doesn't know what day it is.

Im genuinely not a supporter of trump overall but i believe that there would have been no war in Ukraine if he had been potus and that ukraine would now be a member of nato or on the way to be without conflict.

Trump certainly had a 'relationship with Putin' which has previously led to him praising and supporting the man and his methods.

Mothership4two · 16/01/2024 13:36

Your absolutely right @LifeExperience but the Russian presidency is also limited to no more than two consecutive six year terms in their constitution!

Has anyone asked if Kiefer Sutherland is available??!

Seriously, he would do a much better job than either of them!!!

Well they had Regan and Ukraine has Zelenskyy so it's not out of the bounds of possibility!

Roe v Wade going down was never gonna happen either.

LifeExperience · 16/01/2024 13:31

Those worried about Trump changing the 2-term limit, he can't. That's in the Constitution which is hella hard to change. Won't happen.

If Biden stood aside for Harris, she'd never be voted in.

This baffles me too, Biden, he's a sick old man with a wife who should be supporting him but she isn't which makes her mad, evil.

Trump is awful but he's coherent.

The democrats are lemmings for a reason I can't fathom

Biden has always had a stammer, what evidence do you have that Biden is a sick old man? or can you make a mental capacity diag via the TV ?

Trump Coherent???

He thinks he is chosen by God to save America, he is insane!!

We in Europe will rue the day Trump wins his second term, he wont support Ukraine (Biden does) he will take the US out of NATO (Biden backs NATO 100%) and will reach a deal with Putin that will see the Ukrainians back under Russian control.

All good for many on here.

Mothership4two · 16/01/2024 13:28

Yes but one of those "shits" contains dangerous diseases that will effect a lot of others @OhmygodDont and the other just smells bad!

Stringagal · 16/01/2024 12:57

I had a theory that Biden would step aside for Kamala Harris, but it doesn’t look like he’s going to. The thought of Trump getting back in is as terrifying as Truss or Johnson getting a second go.

Far more terrifying than even Truss or Johnson if you ask me ☹️ Both of them knew when it was time to go.
Trump doesn’t.

Carodebalo · 16/01/2024 13:27

Yes he will win. Joe Biden is too old and won't be able to beat Trump this time. The Democrats should have thanked Joe Biden for all his years of loyal service and found another candidate. The result will be that Trump will win. (I like Joe Biden! But he's too old ...) What a disaster.

LifeExperience · 16/01/2024 13:26

Trump has a chance because Grandpa Dementia in the White House has been astoundingly incompetent. The economy is a mess, inflation is rampant, 8 million migrants have come pouring over the southern border, turning large cities into hellscapes, etc. I could go on, but suffice to say that the difference in the US from just 3 years ago is stark, and people will vote for the devil himself to stop it.

OhmygodDont · 16/01/2024 13:25

I mean is no different here really. The option are vote for cat shit or dog shit. Both options are shit and nobody else stands a chance.

You just got to pick what’s worse the cat shit or the dog shit but they are both still shit.

It's well known. A quick Google search brings up a multitude of reports.

"Sources".

Your blatantly racist and homophobic nonsensical disinformation makes me embarrassed for you.

zoom1982 · 16/01/2024 12:41

You mean as opposed to showering with his own daughter and keeping classified documents that as VP he was not allowed to take, in his open garage?

The showering with the daughter came from an unauthenicated conveniently stolen diary and the daughter continually denies that it's true. Dodgy as hell and underhand tactics - no surprise there.

Trump has had many sexual misconduct allegations from real women going back decades including one of rape from his first wife, who was then allegedly paid off (her divorce settlement was increased) who now says she didn't mean he raped her "literally" 🙄He is also on record for saying "I don't even wait. And when you're a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. ... Grab 'em by the pussy You can do anything." which is gross and I wouldn't want anyone who had said that anywhere near me let alone being my leader.

That is not even touching on his dodgy decisions as president, shady business dealings and refusal to step down and the rumpus he then helped cause.

I am not a Biden supporter but better than a bent president. It is a shame that those seem to be America's only options. If Trump gets in again, the rest of the World will be open mouthed at the mentality of some of the American people, except Putin who will be rubbing his hands in glee.

SanctuaryCity · 16/01/2024 08:58

The whole thing is a mess. Both parties have deeply unsuitable candidates. Biden looks like a pensioner with dementia shuffling round a nursing home and Trump is like that racist, sexist, nasty old uncle at a wedding who everyone tolerates acting like a selfish boorish asshole. Why didn’t the democrats stand up to Biden and chose a different, younger candidate?

This baffles me too, Biden, he's a sick old man with a wife who should be supporting him but she isn't which makes her mad, evil.

Trump is awful but he's coherent.

The democrats are lemmings for a reason I can't fathom

keylemon · 16/01/2024 13:16

*Problem is Biden won in 2020 coz it was going to be anyone but Trump, Trump had his chance.

They're both woeful.*

Yes.

If everyone else is clamping down their borders like Billy o it’s going to be - interesting isn’t the right word

The main issues in the US and here are the same. Immigration indeed one of them.

Yes and in many other countries. Atm a fair few seen to think we’ll be immune but highly unlikely

Wheresthebeach · 16/01/2024 13:13

A very scary prospect. But yes, I think he will.

Fullfatandfortyplus · 16/01/2024 13:11

SweetBirdsong · 16/01/2024 12:53

I think he will. Sadly. He has so many horrible qualities. But then again, you may as well have a cucumber in the White House rather than Biden. I often forget he is President. He has no presence or charisma at all, and doesn't seem to know what he is doing half the time.

Cucumber made me laugh out loud

Astonetogo · 16/01/2024 13:11

Something is deeply wrong in America ☹️

I think it’s just too big. Empires fall, don’t they?

hogmanayhoolie · 16/01/2024 13:07

@IhateMIL

Why did you use inverted commas when you called Michelle Obama "wife"?
