To think there are a lot of nasty people on Mumsnet?

Just that.

Have seen so many directly aggressive and passively aggressive comments on here that it makes me think that many mumsnetters are just plain nasty. Assuming to due to unhappiness with own life.

Some examples stick out - when people ask to guess their age some of the guesses are just rude and over the top inaccurate. One poster even questioned a person’s gender even stating they had thick eyebrows which were not groomed due to depression. The disingenuous of “please don’t think I’m being rude but …”.

Also saw someone ask for help with their curtains and the amount of snide remarks was shocking.

I also think a lot of people in here think their way is best and the only way. Insufferable.

To me the people who will kick a person when they are down just seems disproportionately high. Obviously the fact it’s an anonymous forum adds to this.

I like "What exactly do you see in this Prince?"

as a reminder it's not compulsory to put up with shit. It may not constitute immediately helpful advice but the site would be very boring if supportive advice was the only thing permitted.

Furthermore, and back to the original point - how did a this view abhorrent?

Or generally are views where people disagree even politely abhorrent?

Apparently.

It's the same with 'bullying', it is thrown around very easily.

WeeJimmycranky · 09/01/2024 17:26

The vehemence with which some people react to opinions they do not agree with is absurd at times.

This is so true - and it applies to particular topics

Trans issues - that's just one side or the other with each side calling the other bigots.

Brexit - any nuance denied - anyone who supported it or has anything positive to say about it - bigots (apparently).

Toilet brushes and shoes off indoors.....

The vast majority of people have children because they want them. It's the very definition of selfish.

No one does it thinking about how the human species would die out otherwise and clearly ''we'' isn't everyone because not everyone decides to have children.

I feel sorry for the bullies its like they have some problems going on and taking it out on everyone.
I think of my friend years ago that was called all sorts of names because she had her 16 year old son removed from her home.
She was in A&E at the time getting treatment because he attacked her it was awful.
She never did come back to MN after that.
And that poor woman trying to explain to every one about her mums post i really do believe she was a genuine person.
Some post on here are mean and rude not something i would say to people online or in their faces i wouldent want to be friends with a lot of people on here.
I never post anything about myself im nice to everyone because you just dont know what someone is going through.

The number of women who have been helped by posters on Mumsnet is wonderful. Women worn down, conditioned to accept the bare minimum, gaslighting, undermined... And their relationships are brought into the sunlight with outside perspectives and they realise they are worth so much more than they are getting.

I love Mumsnet for that.

I also enjoy the many, many areas where posters share their expertise, or look at things from angles I haven't considered.

The Gardening and the What We're Reading sections are great too. As for FWR - how else would we know about the campaigns and fundraisers (aka digging the allotment) for feminist causes that need support.

Only today there was yet another victory for a woman discriminated at work for GC views. Mumsnet has been a massive rallying point for feminism.

Yes, posters can be snarky or cruel or overly blunt. That's far, far better than the male-dominated spaces of the internet. No Mumsnetter has ever sent me unsolicited dick picks or rape threats or hopes I'll die in a fire...

I love the vipers here. They are ascerbic, funny, knowledgeable, compassionate, and yes, sometimes absolute rotters. But the latter are more than worth it for all the former.

I agree with your first paragraph but it becomes a problem when OP gets hectored. e.g. "Why are you still speaking to THESE PEOPLE ???", "What did the police say when you reported it?" " What exactly do you see in this Prince?" Some posters are trying to be helpful, some are putting the OP down and think they're being clever. Also the amount of projection is massive.

lockbox · 09/01/2024 17:19

I have a tattle account although I don't post much except on the off topic boards but its actually a much nicer, friendlier and supportive forum than on here much of the time, perhaps because people are venting their spleen elsewhere on that board so don't take it out on each other?

Having children is a biological imperative. The reason we have an inbuilt impulse to reproduce is for the survival of our species. Of course, these impulses have been woven into us over millenia, and so the way nature gets us to do something so breathtakingly UNSELFISH as reproduce is by giving us maternal longings. So yes, you could say it's selfish because it's done in response to a hormonal impulse. But that's a very superficial way of assessing actions. The reason for that impulse is the exact opposite of selfishness. Having children is remarkably difficult, painful and sacrificial. It's a long long road of sleepless nights, putting your needs last all the time, even accepting that for a number of years your child mught despise you and show no appreciation for your sacrifices. But our hormones compel us to do it because, if not, the human species would die out.

This is a very passive aggressive thread.

😂

Lyly86 · 09/01/2024 17:13

I genuinely thought the exact same thing today after posting a thread of my own and getting bashed for not leaning into slagging off my partner and not explaining intimate detail about our lives! I think for some people it's an outlet to be angry at the world and exhibit bitterness but thankfully there are also still a lot of kind, rational and logical people on here too!

CatMadam · 09/01/2024 17:12

There’s also so much transphobia posted here
with the assumption that it’s naturally a part of feminism, which is really sad. Nothing radical or feminist about bigotry! (Note to transphobes: I don’t engage with bigots, so you’ll only be wasting your own time by trying to start an argument with me :) )

Surely it takes far more self control and selflessness to go against your wants and impulses. Many parents do their best when the child is here but some do not and a few are even worse and just abusive. The drive to reproduce does not a good parent make. Something can be selfish and biological. We are programmed to like fat and sugar to literally stay alive, we know logically however that too much will cause us to be obese.

Think about it another way, what kind of life will your child have? Will they be happy? Can you provide a good, secure, loving upbringing? There is no guarantee your child will have a great life. So much of the outcomes for children is based just on income which is crazy to me but such is life.

Spidey66 · 09/01/2024 17:08

i think there are an amount of people who like to kick others when they are down, but thankfully they are in a minority.

last summer I had the misfortune to break my shoulder. 10 days later I was on a bus and due to me being unable to navigate a moving bus with a broken shoulder I sat in a priority seat near the driver to ensure I was safe, and posted about it later. While I got a lot of people saying it was fine, I also got a load of people saying ‘how dare you? I’ve got MS and a stroke, I could have needed that seat!’ Yeah maybe you would have, but you weren’t on the bus were you!!!!

As you've clearly demonstrated, people can change from one name to another to post whatever they like as long as it's within talk guidelines.

If this wasn't allowed, many people would think twice about being a dick because then no-one would bother with them.

the second part of that statement is kind of true. The first part made me want to face-palm. If it's within talk guidelines of course it's fine to post.

Edited

But you can be a dick to people within talk guidelines.

However, it doesn't make it right, does it?

Although saying that those people who post asking for others to guess their age are twats in general so deserve some snark

Yes this

Why on earth would anyone post themselves on an internet forum asking 'what age do I look'?

Validation from random people on the internet is not healthy

Mumsnet is worse for this than most social media sites. Much worse.

No......

It's pretty tame on here, which is why I like it. Twitter is awful.

I’m just hoping to understand. I’m on many Reddit threads and don’t witness it there

Reddit has a sub literally called "misogyny", dedicated to porn that degrades women. Mumsnet wouldn't even consider hosting such an open sewer of anti-woman propaganda.

But yeah, you carry on telling people that Reddit's better...

ArcaneWireless · 09/01/2024 17:03

And occasionally it is this.

To think there are a lot of nasty people on Mumsnet?

"Guess my age....oh no im not 21 I'm actually 96" posts are fucking tedious though tbf.

Op, Yabu about the age threads.

Those are fucking stupid

people are either posting themselves because they think they look older

or posting someone they hate (and reducing the age so people remark that they look older)
